Mark Posted 5 November 2005 Posted 5 November 2005 Another 0-0 draw but I guess this isn't a too shabby result. Sounded like we were solid at the back but lacked anything upfront until Hume came on. They were solid but it doesn't help when the defence does it's job but then doesn't help the midfield and attack by hoofing the ball upto Dublin to lose out against their defender nearly every time. I'm pointing the finger at Maybury and Johansson more than the other two. Gerrbrand was probably the best player for us today. And whats with avoiding giving Smith the ball? If we plan on scoring goals in games you have to play to the benefits of our attacking players, lumping the ball to Dublin was only benefitting them, but we did it for 90 minutes. The amount of space Smith was in time and time again, and the obvious pass was there but so many times today the player turned around and passed it back, or lumped it forward was unbelievable. I swear some of those players lack half a braincell between them at times.

Levein also hinted that he could be on the lookout for another striker after his team again failed to find the net at home.He added: "I have thought about bringing in another forward, but there is no point doing that unless I can get someone who will improve the team. It is something that we have talked about and are looking."

Yes it does seem that way... that's hardly surprising given his own footballing background

And if Thracian still posted here I'm sure he would agree with me that the midfield isn't creative enough either. Given the problems with the fullbacks today, and the lack of a creative midfield, I think this line-up would suit us. A panic buy on deadline day, we should have just kept him on loan until we could find a better (not hard) striker in January such as Grant Holt and others. Levein should try him on the right wing, he can't be much worse there than he is as a striker.
Anish Posted 5 November 2005 Posted 5 November 2005 Thankfully I didn't go to today's game, what a waste of £19 that would have been from the sounds of it. I don't think going out and buying another striker will solve our problem. It is the coaching that needs to improve to make us score goals - our system is so defence oriented that none of the midfielders gamble and make the right off the ball movements. That also applies to the strikers too. If players don't make the right runs and try to get into scoring positions, it doesn't matter who you have in your team. I have major doubts over Hammond from what I've seen recently, he does seem to have been a panic buy. I was impressed with him at Crewe but he's looked nothing like that since then. I don't think he'd do much on the wings either, he can't dribble or cross and the only thing he has is pace.

On the radio before the match Levein said that his main aim in the international break will be to work on our attacking play. In the last break he worked on our defence and now we've been pretty solid there so I'm looking forward to seeing what he does during this break... As to the match, I didn't think it was a very poor one, at times it was quite end-to-end, especially the first half. The second half was the dull one. The problem is the one we've been tackling all season, no proper goalscorer.

The thing is though, I'm not confident that a team guided by Levein will ever have the attacking instinct or prowess to score 2-3 goals in a game. Hearts fans told us that Levein's teams are hard to break down and are solid in defence, but don't score many goals. I think we are beginning to see that now. We have looked accomplished in defence recently and that's probably because Levein is finally conveying his defensive skills on the players. That was his forte before he came here, and we can now see why. However, he has always been pretty cautious (I remember reading that he once played 3-6-1 for Hearts in Europe) and it'll be difficult to see how Levein can suddenly switched into 'attacking mode' and make the team score 2-3 (or even 1 would be good!) goals per game.

Dennis wise got a bit of stick from the fans which for me was about the highlight of a very poor performance, hopefully things will improve, at least we didnt concede or lose!

You can tell you've not been to see em much. Burnley, Wolves, Preston, Plymouth, QPR ... now they could really have made you depressed. I thought first half was some of the better stuff City have played this season but we failed to take the chances on offer (again). Levein seems determined to increase the momentum, Babylon says be patient and with Weso and a new striker on the horizon as help for Smithy there's hope on the horizon. Just so long as people keep reminding the boss of his attacking responsibilities. Levein defensive efficiency and some 60's style will do for me.
