We need to talk about Jonny Evans

This season and parts of last season has proved, that he may actually be our most important player.

 

Some will say Vardy, Tielemans or Ndidi; however despite how well those three can contribute, we’ve had some shocking performances when those three have been in the side.

 

Of course as seen yesterday we’ll concede goals with Evans in the team, going forward no doubt we’ll lose games with Evans in the team, but we look far more assured as a defensive unit with him at the back, he is the only defender in our squad that has the leadership and communication skills to organise our back line.

 

Now this is where I have to criticise and be negative, before the start of the season when Fofana got injured and Evans was having problems, I wanted another defender with the experience and leadership qualities of Evans, especially as Wes Morgan retired.

 

We had nobody else who could step in and fill Evans’ role as the leader in the defence, we then went out and signed Vestergaard who is not that type of player.

 

Whenever Evans is out, if we don’t find a working formula without him in the side, then that could prove to be our biggest regret this season, it could well determine whether we finish top six or not, because there’s numerous teams above us right now who are looking decent this season.

Other than Van Dijk who is the stand out, I can't think of too many centre backs in the prem better than Evans.

Yes I was going to mention Dias. I'd say Evans is defo top 5.

I think when people say he is top class then comparing to the likes of Dias and Van Dyke I think they misunderstand cb's. In terms of defensive skills eg: tackling heading blocking, Evans is nto the best. He is certainly very good in all departments but is not at the top. His actual defensive skills are not up there with what cags and Fofanas are and they are younger.

 

What Evans does bring is something thats rarer yet is not really to do with class. The dude is the organiser, mr reliable and so damn consistant. He reads danger in and around the area so well and never fails to pick up from others mistakes. This in turn makes people around him confident in the fact that if they mess up, Mr Evans is there telling them what to do. His use is not that he himself is top class and a top 5 player but that he makes other defenders around him play to the absolute best of their ability. In the mould of Kompany in terms of what he does for a team.

What a player. Just his presence on the pitch has turned things around for us lately imo. Brings that calming influence that allows others to shine. Possibly our most influential player along with YT right now. Please stay fit Jonny boy
