Mainly been a DM for Ajax recently but can also play centre back

I imagine this is more likely to be something for the summer should Wilf leave

Sources: Chelsea, Leicester City and Crystal Palace line up offers for Ajax star Alvarez

Chelsea, Leicester City and Crystal Palace are lining up offers for Ajax star Edson Alvarez, Football Insider understands.

The defensive midfielder, 24, who can also play at centre-back, has established himself as one of the Dutch giant’s top players since arriving from CF America in 2019.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Chelsea, Leicester and Palace have all been making regular checks on Alvarez this season.

The Mexico international has been a standout performer for Ajax in the Dutch Eredivisie and the Champions League this season and is regarded as one of the best holding midfielders in Europe.

Ajax are keen to keep hold of Alvarez but know they face a battle to fend off the growing interest in him this month.

They are braced for offers from the Premier League trio.

He is under contract at the Dutch giants until the summer of 2025 and has two goals and an assist in 22 games across all competitions this term.

Chelsea may need to dip into the transfer market to add defensive reinforcements with Andreas Christiansen, Antonio Rudiger and Cesar Azpilicueta all out of contract this summer.

The club confirmed earlier this month (3 January) Thiago Silva had agreed a contract extension until the end of next season.

Palace may need to sign a replacement for Conor Gallagher in the summer as he is due to return to his parent club Chelsea at the end of the season.

Leicester bolstered their midfield ranks with the arrival of Boubakary Soumaré last summer (2021) but he has failed to make a big impact on Brendan Rodgers’ side.

In other news, a Chelsea loanee who has returned to Cobham could miss ‘six weeks’ after an update in the last 24 hours.

As a part time Ajax fan I can confirm this would be a clever signing if Hamza Mendy Praet and Tielemans go. Suits our transfer style of multiple positions per player, good rotation option with Wilf, better at CB than Vestergaard, runs well with the ball, good progressing passes as well

.....we need quality, I worry this is not it!!!

He looks better in the oppositions box than his own. A very messy player, seems to be committing fouls all day long, he seems a liability

I get your worry, but these are “highlights” compared to watching his games this season in full. He definitely lunges into some tackles but he’s a hard worker and maybe I am biased but I love a Leicester - Ajax connection.

...it is also a showcase of his best work!!!

He may put in a shift, but he looks like he has a lot of refining to do.

If we're going for an Ajax mf, I'd rather we went for Ryan Gravenbach.

....he looks good, not as composed as Tielemans and has an awful habit of turning into areas where he has no idea who is there!!!

Has a great long range shot, has vision, and can pick a pass.

Sorry, he is going to an elite club. Stick with Charles, he the positional flexibility we like.

Standard blathering post, apologies - was trying to say that Gravenberch will go to super club, as Frenkie De Jong did, but Charles De Ketelaere is where we should be targeting out efforts

I said the other day that I'd rather play kasper at cb than Vestergaard. Even give Jakupovic a go at cb if he's not injured.

Edson is a good all around player with a good work rate. I don’t know if he has the speed to cover the range that Ndidi covers, though. Probably better than Ndidi going forward.
