It's not really the Mercury anymore, hasn't been for a while. Its parent company is notorious for similar things with the tabloids it runs. I don't consider them any sort of reliable source for LCFC news.

As are all local media website under the same umbrella, pop ups everywhere, often freeze, one false move and it skips to the next story.

They do have the occasional decent reports but you have to wade through the clickbait and dross to find them.

They do themselves no favours. I don't bother with it these days. It's unashamed garbage.

I could write an massive essay about why this is the case, but I can’t be bothered (nor would anybody want to read it).

 

Unfortunately local journalism is in near terminal decline and click bait is a way to generate ad revenue, and is one of the few remaining things that keep their massively slimmed-down journalistic operations even vaguely economically viable.

 

It’s nobody’s fault. The internet happened and we stopped paying for news. I wrote a dissertation about this 18 years ago.
