Has anyone’s screen gone black (on an android) just after you dial the number, the call goes through, but since I’ve lost the screen can’t select an option when I hear the menu!  Apparently quite common and something to do with the sensor.  Has anyone fixed this themselves?  Factory reset is the last resort.

My elderly parents are on their way round to seek technical support (me) having put their smartphone beyond use, goodness only knows how.

I'm guessing it's either been bricked (not impossible but unlikely) or I will be able to fix it within about 20 seconds. What will it be?

My mum had turned on the 'talkback' function, which makes the phone pretty much unusable unless you're used to it, which you might be if you're registered blind.

Also, as a result of having the volume on weirdly low, you could only just hear the voice, which I think probably made my folks think spirits were trying to contact them when they attempted to use their phone.

In fairness I think I turned this on by accident about 15 years ago and I've known others do it since.

For reference, you turn it on by pressing volume up AND down at the same time. Same to turn it off.

The laptop then appeared from nowhere in order for me to get my Dad logged back into his Microsoft account. So still in the will for now, at least

So, you broke their phone so you could look a helpful son by fixing it, and so now you're staying in the will. Is that what you're telling us....:D

The reality is I may have never been in the will at all for all I know!

So my phone died yesterday. Screen froze and then it just went black and I couldn't do a thing.

A good reminder to back stuff up, because I couldn't remember my gmail password and my backup email no longer exists. I also had never put in my cell number, so I have no way of accessing my account and that has really mucked me up.

Phone was a Galaxy s10e, which was pretty old. I've now got a Samsung 25, but it's been a bit of a nightmare trying to get all my stuff back.

Was shocked that it just died. Took it in for repairs and he changed the battery, but I still got nothing.

He said it was an issue he'd encountered with that phone and it couldn't be fixed.

I knew I was due for an upgrade. I pay for mine and my niece's phone. She had the same one and hers is still fine, but she's happy with the new phone and more so that I'm still paying for it lol

I can't recall if I mentioned it before but I'll mention it again. If you have a Samsung phone and use your Samsung account to back up your phone. Ensure that you log into the Samsung website and check your 2 factor authentication details. I didn't set 2 factor up so, wrongly assumed it wasn't set up. When my phone died and I tried to log into a different phone, I couldn't sign in. The security notifications went to the dead phone and the texts to a random number Samsung added as the default.

After a week chatting to Samsung support, I got sorted and finally added my own number for texts. Plus, added the other half's number as back up. As, if my phone was stolen, I'd not have the sim.

I also forgot to mention, from the Samsung website log in, you can also print a list of recovery codes. If your phone was stolen, you can use then to recover your Samsung account when you've replaced the phone. Or, just access a new one if it's died etc.

Four years after getting my first 5g capable phone, more than that on a supposedly 5g SIM only contract, and 2 years since I got my current handset, assorted visits to EE shops, replacement SIM cards, various calls to EE customer services my phone has at last started receiving a 5g signal completely out of the blue.

5g has been the biggest con of the last 5 years.  We're only just starting to see "proper" 5g now.

I recently got the S25, as my old Samsung finally bit the dust.

Nice upgrade after 6 years with the S10e.

I got the Pixel 10 recently and returned it as my S21 was basically as capable even though it's nearly 5 years old. Feeling the age a bit, but wasn't worth the cost for a new device.

Galaxy devices have always been class so hope it treats you well!
