It was still every bit a closed shop when we did win it. I get what you mean though, they are doing everything they can to appease the super league clubs behind the scenes. We protest about the super league but money talks in the end. Stuff like the new coefficient rule for Champions League giving an extra spot to clubs who've failed that year etc. It's all happening in plain sight and no one says anything.

The stench of it all

I think Chandler and Hine are our most prolific partneship.

Frustrating for the club to finish 3rd and 2nd in 1928 and 1929.  Put that stat to bed in 2016.

Indeed, and perhaps should have won it under Gillies, maybe even the double! Back then people provably didn’t use the term “bottled it”.

I think 1963 was the ultimate nearly season. Absolutely wonderful the 2016 team did not trip up and the 2021 boys laid the ghosts of the 4 lost finals particularly 63.

We've had success and in some ways got use to it that's why it is so difficult to accept our current plight.

It's not the winning/losing that bothers me, even the relegation. Its the lack of identity, direction. I'd rather feel angry/frustration at the club than this current apathy.

We'll go back to League 1, win the champions league and go back to league 1 again within in the next 20. All while teams like Everton and Villa stay in the premier league but dont win a thing

Sounds likely.

The way West Ham have celebrated winning a Micky Mouse European trophy you'd have thought they'd won the PL or Champions league ffs!!!

This just sounds really bitter. It was great fun when we ended up in it last season. Their run in seemed a bit crappier than ours but we were playing against some really good sides with European pedigree, particularly PSV and Roma.

I’d have loved us to win it as would most others on here. Probably not going to get a look in in any other European trophy now!

A different manager with some balls and we could have won the conference league last year. What a damp squib off an effort over 2 legs that was. We were like a French tank stuck in reverse!

The eventual failure of the Ice King's was the burden the club carried for over 50 decades. I think that particular monkey on our backs is still evident today and I'm not entirely sure that 2016 & 2021 has totally wiped out that part of our soul. Even now is that acceptance from some that we have gone back to our rightful place of never winning 'owt. You didn't need to be around at that time, it's all documented to look back at and weep. Little' ol Leicester lives on.

It might sound bitter and it was something a bit different for us last season, but in the light of day, it's a third rate euro trophy that was only invented very recently. Rodgers was correct by saying that he didn't know what it was. Same goes for much of our fan base. It's not a major trophy yet and won't be for many years. It's given West Ham some fun but it's all a bit over the top.

I would say it was Rodgers job to know about it to be fair. Given he wasn’t good enough to keep up in the competition above that.

But for me, it’s like saying we shouldn’t have celebrated winning league 1 as it’s a third rate league in this country. Should we just have applauded politely and headed off home then?

The third division has existed in some form for many many decades, with lots of other teams who have gone on to win trophies playing in it at some point.

The issue here is they can't stop creaming their pants saying that West Ham have won their first major trophy in 43 years, which suggests they've beaten the odds to win one of the existing trophies with actual prestige, when all they've done is win a trophy for the team that comes 7th in the league by beating a series of pub teams. That's not to pretend we wouldn't have been ecstatic to win it but it would have been more of an addition to the prem and FA cup wins than being anywhere near equivalent to it.

I get the thing about it being a new competition. The irony being, if it gains a reputation over the years and has big clubs competing and winning it, it’ll gain more credibility and be considered a bigger deal.

And yes, the Premier League and FA cup are bigger deals, for us. Clubs like West Ham don’t get to finals and win stuff so I’m happy to let them enjoy it.

Ultimately, if you’re competing in a competition or league, it’s because it’s the level you are at. Only a small number of clubs can define themselves by winning Premier League titles or Champions League. There were many of our ‘fans’ being snobby saying the Europa League was beneath us. That is a competition which has been around albeit under the previous name and got a rich history.

For many clubs winning a league 2 or league 1 titles or the EFL trophy is the highlight so I just hate this snobbery about it.

I understand the points you made. I often wondered if we had won the cup in 63 or even 61 that the whole profile and confidence in the club would have been raised for the 50 years you mentioned.  I suppose that we didn't fail during the run in to win the league was all the more astounding as a lot of us expected to mess it up aka the monkey on our backs

Think how much we will celebrate if we get promoted next season. Won't be a major trophy but will still delight in it.

Unbelievable isn't it.

I'm pleased for West Ham. I'd rather be mid table and win a European Trophy than 6th and win fvck all. Plus they will next season play in the Europa League despite. All in all a good season for them given they looked like favourites for relegation at one point.

I don't see us taking the 64 League Cup off our honours board. Was a newish competition and some of the bigger sides did not enter. I'm sure the players and fans were still celebrating their success
