Re: the league cup wins - out of all of them the best we played was against Spurs. They mugged us that day.

Horrendous for me personally. I was working in a bar, which was owned by two Spurs fans. At the end of the night clean up they chanted, “Leicester clean our floor” mercilessly! 😂

Thought in the replay in 97 we were superb.

Beat them twice in the league and finished above them that season pretty comfortably

As I've said before, I doubt I'll ever see us finish top 6 AND win a major trophy in the same season. It was remarkable we achieved that.

Trophies are what playing Sport is about, winning, they can't ever be taken away from us.

Only 6 clubs have won the PL, FA cup and League cup in the PL era.

We have done very well to be in that group.

7 surely.

All "PL" winners have won the FA Cup and League Cup too.

None of that matters, they have won a trophy which is the memory they will cherish forever. It's akin to those saying we 'only' won the league because the traditional top teams were in a transition phase at the time. I could not care if our opponents were all playing with one leg, we won it.

Also for further context, we were the favourites last season to win the Europa League, then got bundled out at the group stage into the conference cup. With our resources we should have won that cup at a canter.

It’s a fair point though, but I agree who cares - you can only beat who is on front of you

Not in the PL era, Blackburn won it pre war. I don't really see the point though in splitting things between pre and post PL.

I make it 14 clubs that have won all 3 domestic trophies.

And when you think about it like that it's pretty satisfying being in that group.

There's some obfuscation about what Rudkin's role and responsibilities are but the very fact he's director of football is enough to know he's culpable.

Interesting spec from this paper on sporting/technical director roles.

Key personal characteristics include:

 Football gravitas and credibility both internally and externally

  Ability to work at a senior level with football executives

  Football industry knowledge

  Business and financial acumen

  Ability to lead and develop a high performance culture

  Ability to develop and deliver a strategy both strategically and operationally

  Understanding of – and the ability to deliver – good governance

  Ability to manage research (monitor and evaluate) on relevant

performance measures

  High level of both football and general intelligence

  Ability to encourage open debate and collaborative working

  Experience dealing with multinational groups of players

  Ability to play a leading role in the creation of a club culture

  Ability to manage multiple high profile projects

  Cultural understanding of English football

  Good mediation skills when balancing tensions between staff / players /

the Board.

  Collaborative style, in order to get the right balance in working with the

1st Team Team Manager and Head Coach

  Conveys an image that is consistent with that of the Club

  Ability to relate to and influence people at different levels/ages

  Ability to adapt to and embrace change, new ideas/theories to improve the systems currently in place through innovation

  A patient approach

  Commercially astute

  Low ego

  Embracing change

Rudkin's a perfect fit lol

Also West Ham's route was originally easier because they topped their group and didn't have to rely on a playoff round or any guff like that.

Nothing  is easy, especially trophies..Well done the Hammers, they grabbed their

chance..club,players & manager…

We couldn’t stand up once this season…

Take what others have done, following us as an example….

Brighton,Brentford…and one step further W.Ham…

let’s not demean, the character that pushed us forward, and towed others along that then created their own…Others as mentioned despite our downfall have earned their

right to be recognised for their achievements.

Sour grapes, should not be our demeanour….

I wish we could appreciate what happened and be ambitious.

Yeah too many of our lot seem happy to pack up with what we’ve got and go home

It is, and it's staggering some of the clubs that aren't. Everton for example, 9 league titles and 5 FA Cup's but never won the League Cup.

It dawned on me last night that winning trophies for any club is a very very rare thing. 43 years since West Ham won the FA Cup....43 years...let that sink in.....we've won 2 league cups, 1 Premier League, Community Shield and an FA Cup in that time.

It might sound defeatist but its more realistic that we won't win any major silverware for as long as I live (I'm 44 now) so you can do the math.

Just appreciate what we witnessed over the past 9 years....it will probably never be that good ever again.

Maths Jeremy, it's maths.

Oh, we won the PL and FA Cup. It’s ok to go back to league one then. **** that.

Don’t get me wrong, the last 15 years has been incredible but the mis-management over the last 18 months is baffling.

If they appoint Smith full time that would just top it off.

Reset required.

We are unique in that respect, and bigger clubs than us have either won nothing in that time or next to nothing (eg Spurs only trophy in that period is 1 league cup).

But to put the West Ham thing in to context, in that competition they beat Larnaca, Gent and AZ Alkmaar to get to the final. I can only compare it to us - Rennes, PSV and Roma… Wouldn’t you have expected West Ham to get to the final? And to be honest they got a little lucky last night. Fair play to them though, like you say a trophy is a trophy.

I loved the concept of the conference league last season. Effectively a Johnstone Paint tournament giving smaller countries legit euro football. Then, from quarters onwards, it suddenly blossomed  into a very very decent Cup Winners' Cup level competition. Except this season.

No blossom. But It remained a Johnstone Paint level event and sadly west ham have advantage. Grossly undeserved.
