We are as far as directors are concerned we are in the Premier League which is one of the top 2 or 3 leagues in the world.

I think people forget how much pulling power that has, if Top gave the incoming dof an attractive remit with control over aspects that they wanted we would attract alot of elite DOFs especially if they were out of work

You can't look at this from a fans perspective

Your definition of Elite differs from mine.

We have become a poorly run club who look to be heading to the Championship. Any incoming candidate will know that he will have a limited budget to replace the average to poor players that have expensive contracts.

No, I see what you are saying but I think you seriously undervalue the pulling power of the prem/ top championship side compared to most of the other leagues in the world.

Granted we are not the elite of the elite but in the wider world of football we're still in the top 2-5% of teams especially with the wages we can afford to pay.

Current performance isn't everything, we have some of the best training facilities in the world, rich owners who invest ( you can argue that they invest in the wrong places but not that they don't put money in) who with the direction of a strong capable DOF  could easily turn this around within a 3-5 years and we have recently got a track record of winning major trophies.

My point being there is still alot that's attractive about this club it has the basis to be a solid competitive top 10 prem team if run properly.

We definitely have potential but we will need a top to bottom renovation to become a club that can challenge for the top half of the Premier League.  The DOF is a critical position & hopefully Top makes the right decision if & when he finds a set of testicles & punts Rudkin.

Interesting point about getting someone in who's up and coming. So let's rule out the PL.

There is no team in the Championship overachieving at the moment. League 1 is very much to type bar Wycombe.

So you go to Europe:-

Ligue 1 - gone to type

Serie A - Nope, outside shout for Bologna but Sartori is 67. Como comfortably look after their own staff.

La Liga - gone to type, Rayo outside shout

Bundesliga - Mainz & Freiburg - Hartenbach at Freiburg is 60 (https://www.scfreiburg.com/en/latest/news/2024/25/interview-klemens-hartenbach/ - good comms there) and Mainz can't work out.

So you heading towards the smaller European leagues and a lot of them are reverting to type/budget. Frode Thomassen at Bodo/GLimt may be ?

No outstanding candidate from those coming through. So you probably going to have to over promote or get someone out of work.

I'd also be interested in Bodo Glimt's manager. Not the youngest as he's about 56 I think but he's done an amazing job with them. Been with them 7 years now so not sure if he's comfortable there and maybe wouldn't want to leave. If he was 10 years younger he may have but at the age he's at now, he might be happy staying where he is.

Those getting all misty eyed about Claude might be fighting that Eduardo Macia had a major hand in the recruitment, in particular the excellent window in the summer of 2018.

I wonder if there is scope to bring Macia back?

Walsh didn't do well at Everton in the role.

Eduardo Macia should 100% be replacing Glover, with a real organiser as DOF.

Kevin Thelwell is leaving Everton, and would do that job.

Can’t see Top having the balls to get rid of Rudkin he’s got his feet too far under the table.

More importantly why do we need to replace him. Director of Football is a made up position can you see Brian Clough being handed signings from a DOF. I was speaking with Derby fans last night who have the similar complaint of managers getting players a DOF signed that the manager knew nothing about. Let’s be novel have no DOF and have the manager lead. No excuses from the manager then.

No, this is essentially what we have been doing all along under KP and unless you end up with a Pearson or Puel (who for his faults in coaching was a good manager of building a squad and recruitment), it doesn’t work.

We have ended up with a mismatch of players and no clear direction as we keep lumbering from style to another.

The clubs doing well currently do have a club level strategy and managers brought in fit this. It doesn’t mean you bring players in against your managers wishes as such, but if the direction of the club is set, the players you are bringing in should be aligned with the manager you have.
