All this whinging over shirt Nos shows how short on football topics we are.

No outfield signings to slag off

Even rumours are threadbare.

Luckily we still have plenty of time to address this before our first match.

So the club are going to market this ‘storyline’ with something they can’t even sell? What a ****ing stupid idea

I think you're misunderstanding haha. I meant you could buy a number 9 shirt, but not get a name on the back with it. I never said it was a great idea, just a "****ing stupid idea" in your words. Sorry for having a bit of fun on little sleep lol

I’m not misunderstanding I do think it’s an awful idea, who’s going to buy a number 9 shirt without a name, it’ll look like a Sunday league shirt especially without a sponsor. With that being said probably more than those who’ll buy ‘Ayew 9’ 😂

Crikey, I remember everyone making a valid argument we shouldn't retire the 9 and it should be something every young player strives for. I dont think anyone should have it until they earn it. But weve just given it away 🤷‍♂️

Looking at Ayew’s age, it has been effectively retired.

Who decides squad numbers?

Seems predictably tone deaf giving Ayew no.9 when he has a year left.

Why bother changing his number?????

I think in this case, what they have done is sensible. For example ‘if’ Kone does join us and he is given 9, this will heap more pressure on him taking over a legend’s shirt. Ayew on the other hand will have no such concerns as we are all aware of what he is and all about. Plus he will be gone 12 months from now and any player following Ayew, as opposed to Vardy, is a completely different scenario.

100% this.

I really hope there's no booing when his name and number is read out. There will be though

The players themselves can ask for the number, Ayew having worn the number 9 shirt multiple times in his career for club and country has more then likely asked for it and it’s currently available so he’s got it

Vardy hasn't passed away has he? 9 is an iconic number and focal point for any team, even dare I say, bigger than Vards?

And as others have pointed out JA9 will be gone in a year, and inheriting the shirt will be much less intimidating taking it from Ayew then the GOAT.

He might not be the CF some people want, but he's the one we have, I'll certainly be behind him.

Experience counts for a lot and Ayew has it in spades. I've heard his relative lack of goals quoted, but his link up play, holding up the ball, fouls won and reading of the game are all good.

I think that with certain players it doesn't really matter what they do, it's only the negatives that will be focussed on...
