Ultimately if Ayew is our starting centre forward and 9 is vacant he can have it.

I've watched Carl Cort and Geoff Horsfield wear it, let's not pretend shirt numbers are in any way sacred.

Yeah, some of the reactions on social media are ridiculous.

Also takes a bit of pressure off the next striker we sign. They won't be the "new Vardy", regardless what number they're given.

I genuinely couldn’t remember if we had sold Harry Souttar. What on earth is going on with him? Guessing he’s severely injured and I’ve missed something?

Did his cruciate last season while on loan at Sheffield United, out until the end of the calendar year.

Apparently was excellent there, so could be that he heads back when fit. Or maybe he finally gets a chance here...

Ayew getting Vardy’s number feels extremely tone deaf and verging on offensive to the fans.

I know that seems a bit melodramatic but it kinda is. That number has belonged to a club legend and one of the few genuine world class players we've ever had for more than a decade.

He leaves and you immediately give it to a player who isn't even really a natural striker, who nobody wants to be our starting centre forward this year and the vast majority of the fans not only wish we'd never signed but see him as a symptom of our decline.

I don't think I've ever reacted, let alone over reacted, to the squad number announcement before but that's made me borderline physically ill.

I think you retire it, or don't worry about who get it.

I wouldn't retire it. I wouldn't ever retire a 1 - 11 number to be honest and I think retiring numbers is lame.

But you don't immediately give it to one of the least popular players in the squad a couple of months later.

Ayew should be getting moved on ASAP not having a figurative torch passed to him.

Football fans are sentimental about this by and large, the club have got to know people will care somewhat.

Should be signing a young striker we're investing in and giving it to him.

Personally, I couldn't care less about shirt numbers, but I do understand where you're coming from. If it were a club decision, it would indeed be tone deaf to have Ayew as your apparent replacement for Vardy.

However this looks to me more like a team/management decision rather than a club-level one. It's quite possible that someone has said 'look, we might be bringing in a younger chap who could end up playing the "nine" role - do we save the shirt for him?' And between management and senior players they may have thought that this would be a lot of undue pressure (which will only grow if we retire the shirt for a year or two) on a younger player, and perhaps someone with a little more seniority should assume the burden. If Ayew has said, 'alright, I'll do it', then regardless of whether I thought we should have signed him last summer or not, I'd have to applaud him for taking on the responsibility. I wish others would show that level of commitment.

Guys…..it’s just a number ffs. Chill out. The legend of Vardy will live on regardless of who wears his old number. No one will wear it with the same level of success. But we weren’t going to never have a number 9 again….

I thought that we could only have 25?

we can register 25 players over the age of 21, several of those are under that age so don't need to be registered others simply have the number they already have

Cort and Horsfield werent inheriting the number from the clubs GOAT.

Agree numbers arent sacred but this is the total non thinking i expect from leicester.
