The 'saving Finnegan's sanity' Manor Solomon thread.

During the American led invasion of Iraq Americans travelling often pretended to be Canadian for obvious reasons. The fact is if you are seen to support, even tacitly support, your country's actions then people will judge you on that, rightly or wrongly. And your countrymen's actions taint you, as Irish in Britain will know and as South Africans will know.

Now I'm not saying that Solomon is necessarily a bad person or that he shouldn't play for us, but people will have more reservations at the moment about signing an Israeli or Russian player especially if that player has not explicitly condemned what their country is doing.

Worth remembering also Israel is judged obviously not just by the events post October 2023, but also what the country has been doing for decades.

One thing this thread shows is how many people have internalised the lie that Israel gets more criticism, and Israelis are more disliked, because they are Jewish.

Quite an exaggeration. There are about 20 posters on this thread and not all of them are pro-Isreal. Unbelievably statistically insignificant.

Did not know we were in for him though, he'd score goals at this level IMO.

Yes they have. A poster was replying to me basically asking "why don't you really like Solomon eh eh?" and called me bigoted.

Another poster talked about Islamic terrorism and attitudes towards Muslim players. The implication is clear.

Or they're intimating that you don't like him because of his nationality, which is xenophobic. You'd be xenophobic if you said you didn't want us to sign, or you just straight up disliked, a Polish or Iranian player because you disagreed with their government's policy. There's nothing there at all that's accusing you of being antisemitic.

There's widespread opposition towards Israel from Muslims, not necessarily antipathy towards Jews.

I honestly find people claiming that they've been accused of being antisemitic every time someone pushes back on their views about Israel at least as tiresome as its supporters accusing any criticism of the country of being motivated by antisemitism.

No you wouldn't

Also there's a bit more to Israel than just disagreeing with their government

Why wouldn't you?

The only Iranian player we've ever had, Hossein Kaebi, effectively sacrificed his international career and jeopardised his own safety in Iran by participating in a protest against the regime.

What if we'd refused to support or sign him because we'd assumed he supported the government?

You're moving the goalposts somewhat. If someone didn't want to sign a player because they've supported a cause they disagreed with, I would never say they are xenophobic.

TBF that's the whole point of social media at least you're adult enough to admit it and not cry about it. Kudos

I'm not allowed to respond substantively, but suffice to say that there's a lot of difference between 'October 7th was bad' and supporting everything that followed it.

Well I for one can't wait for this player to join so we can constantly have debates and arguments...

  • Every two weeks rinse and repeat this thread
  • When an opposition team chants something against him
  • When our own fans chant against him
  • When the abuse becomes like this if he doesn't play well
  • The microscopic analysis on how he interacts with Hamza et al
  • For the narrative of our season, whatever that be, to be overtaken with all of the above

Hahahaha. I've noticed a few of your posts are high quality moans compared to the usual happy clappers posts. You're like the GPT -5 compared to Lakoyne 42 who was about GPT -3.5.

Just love a snarky whine every now and then. Let things pan out and join in when I can control myself no more

Anyone know why maccabi tel aviv are in the europa league? Not very European imho

What about Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan ?

depends which jurisdiction you come under.  Israel is uefa.  That’s historical because wasn’t workable for them to be in the same region as the Arab nations around them that didn’t recognise their right to exist for thirty years + and in some cases still don’t.

Both Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan look quite nice places from what I’ve seen on various travel blogs on YouTube. Not really European but they can stick around in our football tournies
