Oldblueyes Posted 10 July Posted 10 July Why do we constantly refuse reasonable bids for some of our want away players. Surely a players value is only worth the value clubs are willing to pay. Is this snother trait of our infamous Mr Rudkin.

Saints Fan In Peace Posted 13 July Posted 13 July (edited) https://uk.sports.yahoo.com/news/mccarthy-reportedly-set-join-former-120100263.html Slightly odd one, as Martin dropped him down to third choice with us because he can't play out. Experienced cover maybe? But overall, a very decent signing on a free if true. Macca's not perfect, but he's ten times better than Bazunu. Edited 13 July by Saints Fan In Peace 2
smudgerfox Posted 13 July Posted 13 July On the bench for the 9-0 - presumably, Angus Gunn not available... 2

I hate to tell you this, but it was Macca who was in goal when we actually managed to lose 9-0 *again* the following season https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/55806211 He is decent though, I promise. Way better than Gunn and Bazunu and has played for England. Solid signing on a free. 1

davieG Posted 14 July Author Posted 14 July This seems to sum up our transfers In May 2017, Tielemans joined French titans Monaco on a five-year deal for a fee of around £21m. He was branded a flop after struggling to make an impression in Ligie 1, yet the following year he was handed a career lifeline. In January 2019, Tielemans joined Leicester City on loan until the end of the season, with impressive early showings earning him a permanent £32m summer transfer to the Foxes. And glory would follow with the former Premier League champions. So a player bought for £21 mill deemed a failure after 2 years along come LCFC and pay £32mill for him . Some tough negotiating went on there. even allowing for a decent loan period. We then let him leave for nothing.

That's the Angus Gunn who was FOURTH choice keeper at Forest last season.. Indeed, he isn't available, as he's off to MLS (with San Jose) when it resumes after the World Cup.

We initially all hated them, but if a club comes with the clause we are obliged to present the offer to the player and not block him leaving if he wants. I think the him staying to end the contract was probably Rodgers telling the club he wants to keep the player at all costs, club couldnt get him to agree new contract, so did the next best thing in their minds which was just to keep him to end of contract, I dont think Tielemans would have refused to join Villa e.g. if they came in a year earlier. We were doing things ok for a while, losing Maguire didnt hurt us at all as we had already signed a replacement, but the moment it was clear Tielemans was being awkrawd, a new signing should have been made, probably at least 18 months before end of his contract so if the replacement, didnt look up to it, there would be another window to get another person in. I also think the style affected the situation, looking at villa performances, he does a lot of forward passes (which was similar to us early on), and also some dribbles. During the last 18 months or so of Rodgers tenure, we were increasingly more on egg shells, players scolded for losing possession and dribbling a no go. That was anti Tielemans football. If he would rather be on TV than offer that in preseason, then he's got to go.
