Has decided that it's a good idea to swim up the Thames

This, I imagine, would be its post in the 'craziest thing you've done today' thread.

Maybe it got a scholarship at Oxford or something and fancied seeing its halls.

that whale must be retarded, or it must have brain damage or something, cus i'm sure a healthy creature would be able to sense what's going on.

I doubt it, too much traffic on the river and the noise around it will be confusing it

you may be right, i'm no whale expert.

Well If it has got across to Greenwich from Chelsea it is going in the right direction and making a fair bit of progress I'd say. Bit of a shame it won't be in central London for another day though.

Just had a look at Sky News and it's still around Albert Bridge, so it's still a long way up River

it would be nice if the media's boats and 'copters would bugger off so the experts can get on with helping the poor sod!

Rescuers race to save lost whale

Camera crew film the boat from Harbour Master's boat

Rescue teams are working out how to save a whale which has been stranded in the River Thames since at least Friday.

The 16-18ft (5m) northern bottle-nosed whale is currently near Albert Bridge in Chelsea, central London.

This dashed marine experts' hopes that it was heading east towards the sea, and raised fears the mammal could become beached at low tide at midday.

Huge crowds are expected to line the Thames to watch rescue efforts but boat owners are urged to stay off the water.

A sighting of the whale at 0100 GMT in the Battersea area disppointed rescuers buoyed by an earlier report that it had been seen in Greenwich, which is closer to the sea.

This is extremely rare in British waters as they are normally found in deep waters in the North Atlantic

The exhausted and disoriented whale was seen struggling against the river's strong currents.

Mark Stevens, of the British Divers Marine Life Rescue, said that while beaching may cause the whale further distress and possible injury, it would provide the best opportunity to get the whale to safety.

"We need it to beach - that sounds really harsh but we can't put people into the water to grab this animal. It's way too strong for us, people would get hurt," he said.

If that happened then rescuers would use inflatable booms, a harness and an giant floating crane to rescue the whale and have it assessed by a specialist vet.

The whale was first spotted at 0830 GMT on Friday by a man on a train and has since attracted massive public and media attention.

It soon became clear there was cause for concern, as the animal came within yards of the banks, almost beaching, and crashed into an empty boat, causing itself slight bleeding.

The novelty of a whale in the Thames has now given way to concern that it should not be there.

Crowds were again expected to flock to the riverbank to catch a glimpse, prompting appeals for sight-seeing boats to keep well clear.

Paul Jepson, vet with the Zoological Society of London, was said to have seen the whale from a boat and expressed concern about injuries on its head and tail, and the disorientated manner in which it was swimming.

There were reports of a pod of whales in the Thames estuary earlier in the week, and it was possible that the whale had become separated from this group.

It was the first sighting of the endangered species in the river since records began nearly a century ago.
