Ric Flair Posted 22 February 2006 Posted 22 February 2006 players ive seen flowers kaamark whitlow walsh elliott tommy wright (original) lennon izzet savage lineker collymore subs walker taggart mccalister mancini heskey I forgot about him, I think us fans forget what an honour it was to have someone of his calibre playing for us. Imagine a Mancini/Collymore partnership in their peak. Frightening. Still not going to give Taylor any credit though, nonce.
Thracian Posted 22 February 2006 Posted 22 February 2006 Arthur Rowley, I'm sad to say I never saw play, I first went down in 1960 and even then I have no recollection of some of the players of that time like Ian White. Just a reminder as I've just been through his record. Highest goalscorer ever in the Football League's history with 434 in 619 games. He spent eight seasons at Leicester from 1950-58, scored a total of 265 goals in 321 appearances, a phenomentally consistent record and he had a lethal left foot. His goals were scored in the First and Second Division and included 16 hat-tricks plus further records for the most penalties with 41 in League and Cup plus most goals by anyone for City in a season - 44 in 42 matches - during City's promotion year of 1956/57. From 1950/51 when he notched 28 goals in subsequent seasons he scored 38, 39, 30, 23, 29, 44, 20 to make up his 265 total. In the first division with Leicester he claimed 23 goals in 36 games (1954/55) and 20 in 25 games 1957/58 ... a true legend. It was my privilege to see him score with his right foot at the end of his days with City in 1957/58 and he recounts how easy it was with Derek Hogg and Mal Griffiths supplying the crosses. If only we'd gotta a teaching video to pass on to Sylla because those two managed goals or assists with uplifting regularity.

Thracian Posted 22 February 2006 Posted 22 February 2006 I didn't go for Lineker because I never saw him in a Leicester shirt. I did however see him several times for England and whilst playing for Spurs but never for Leicester as I was too young. As for Wesolowski, he's the best youngster i've ever seen come through the ranks and he'll have a better career than Robbie Savage if these injuries don't ruin him. I predict that if we did this XI in 5 or 6 years then even Davieg and Thracian (if still coherant ) would include Wesolowski in their starting XI even rivalling their idol Davie Gibson I'm a really big fan of Weso's but a Davie Gibson he's not. Different type of player. The two together in the same team would be interesting but Weso displacing McLintock as a midfield attacker ummmm, he's got a lot of winning things to do first but we'll see.

Thracian Posted 23 February 2006 Posted 23 February 2006 It's been a fascinating exercise this - a sort of who's who of Leicester City through the generations. It has revived some wonderful memories and not all of them so old. Pontus Kamark for instance, Derek Dougan, David Nish and Graham Cross. Reading the background on Arthur Rowley there was even mention of people I just recall as a nipper like Jack Froggatt, Ken Leek, Jimmy Walsh, Ken Keyworth and Howard "Puffer" Riley, who's still around the place. Not a mention anywhere though for Andy Lochhead. We've certainly had some terrific players right across the different decades. I wonder which of them you might call the greatest character? Frank Worthington, Derek Dougan, a bloke called Frank Large, Ian Marshall, Walshie, Taggart, Stevie Claridge, Stan Collymore are people who spring to my mind.

Subs Keller Heskey Lennon Elliott Smith Superb line-up there. Not seen all of those players live for City but i've seen footage or watched them at other clubs and that has got to be one of the strongest line-ups here. Beautiful.
surrifox Posted 23 February 2006 Posted 23 February 2006 This is an "opinion" thing of course but no list should exclude Gordon Banks- this club's only World Cup Winner
Sly Posted 23 February 2006 Author Posted 23 February 2006 Well I decided to wait a day since I started this topic to add my line up. Its certainly been interesting reading and its nice to see the likes of Thracian and Davie G including some of the players I can't remember!!! If we were to dwell on the all time greatest Leicester team just think of the players we could have included. To read down the list of famous players on Leicester's official site it includes Izzet, Smith, Cross, Lennon, Heskey, Keyworth, Walsh, Nish, Samuels, Shilton, Lineker, Glover, Worthington, Weller, Rowley, Chandler, Birchenall, Banks & Appleton. From the highlights I've seen of some of these players they were great. Rowley's goal scoring record was a feat in itself and one that any Striker would do well to surpass. As I'm only 24 I'll base my side on what I've seen for the past 20 years if being a Leicester fan, this may be a little bias towards the past ten years though as I remember more about those. I've opted for a 3-5-2 as appose to a 4-4-2 so I could include Lennon, Izzet and Savage. GK: Tim Flowers DC: Steve Walsh DC: Matt Elliott DC: Pontus Kaamark ML: Steve Guppy MR: Momo Sylla........No sorry I meant Matthew Piper MC: Neil Lennon MC: Muzzy Izzet MC: Robbie Savage FW: Stan Collymore FW: Emile Heskey S1 Kasey Keller S2 Gerry Taggart S3 Darren Eadie S4 Gary Parker S5 Tony Cottee Its very bias towards the O'Neill era. You could argue the toss to include Darren Eadie on the left wing I suppose, but I don't think we ever saw the best of him in a Leicester shirt. One player who I think would be worthy of a slot in a 4-4-2 setup would be Gary Rowett, I always thought he was a good right full back. I toyed with the idea of having Simon Grayson in as a left back as well if I'd of gone 4-4-2.
Ric Flair Posted 23 February 2006 Posted 23 February 2006 This is an "opinion" thing of course but no list should exclude Gordon Banks- this club's only World Cup Winner But 95% of people who post on here haven't seen him play for Leicester, which is what people are basing their selection on.

Jonesy_rules Posted 23 February 2006 Posted 23 February 2006 I just think he's a budding young player, that has shown a lot of promise, and i'm willing to say he will become one of our greats, if we can keep him and stearman in defence for a while we have a good foundation!

I've noticed he's probably one of the most common picks in the team, yet he was often injured. Granted he was a great defender, but more a cult hero because he didn't look at the ball but the players eyes instead.
