Babylon Posted 8 March 2006 Posted 8 March 2006 With the transfer market as it is there must be plenty of out of contract players out there with Joey's ability. After all, he cost us nothing!!! I agree, but I think we are losing out because we are in limbo at the moment. If the players were any good and out of contract you'd think other clubs would have negotiated with them already.
Ric Flair Posted 8 March 2006 Posted 8 March 2006 I don't think we'll be able to find somebody who can shoot as well as Joey. People say Hughes and Williams could be brilliant for us, but I don't think they are anywhere near as good as Joey. If you compare what Joey does and what Hughes and Williams do when they are playing, Joey gets far more involved in the play and has been at the heart of most of our good play. He has been our most creative player in terms of assists this season, and also contributed 9 goals from midfield which is a incredible total. Williams and Hughes wouldn't get that many between them. I doubt we'll get a player of the same quality as Gudjonsson for free, which is essentially what we have to do because we won't have any money to spend. My sentiments exactly. We all know Gudjonsson has his flaws, if he didn't then there would have been zero chance of us signing him when he became available on a free transfer. He's worked very hard on his game and has reaped the rewards, something I like to see in a player. Who's put the time and effort in to improve as a player. TrickyTrev, I think your under-estimating the situation this club is in. From what I gather we'll now be in the same boat as Coventry, Derby, Ipswich, Plymouth, Burnley, QPR, etc who have literally no money to spend. So all their signings will have to be either free transfers or nominal fee's at best. That's unless we sell some players, but i'd rather not have to do that. Therefore, please tell me how you think it shouldn't be too hard to find a midfielder for free who sets up as many goals as Gudjonsson (his assists run in to double figures) and scores as many as he does. I know 5 of his goals are penalties and we'd have somebody else take them, but I think we've been blessed over the years with having decent penalty takers who rarely miss and Gudjonsson is one of them. He has still scored the goals along with his goals from open play. I think we will need 2 new central midfielders, possibly 3 if Williams leaves. With us needing quantity, it will be hard to find the quality aswell with a serious lack of funds. Neil Danns is a quality player, but he'll command £500,000 (Luton had a bid of this size turned down last month). I hope Rob Kelly is out searching now for players because it will be a struggle and a massive gamble as there won't be an international central midfielder who's still got 7 or 8 years left in him available for free who's willing to come here.
Thracian Posted 8 March 2006 Posted 8 March 2006 How many of his goals have been penalties? Its not as if the team loses out on those goals if he doesn't take them. I think fans completely OVER RATE the value fo long range shooting particuarly form an average player like Gudjohnson. Well over 90% of his long rangers go in row Z and ruin potentially prosperous attacks. Most fans are willing to over look all this if he scores one freak goal from the half way line. I really don't want to make it soudn like I am ona massive downer about Joey. He has worked really hard this season and actually learnt how to pass the ball (his through ball to Hume is something he simply wasn't capable of last season) and as a result been our most consistent midfield player. I just think the idea that a player witha bad first touch, average passing, no athleticism and who can't tackle is anythign but irreplacable despite his numerous positive qualities. You could say the same about Fryatt as far as penalties are concerned if you look back. They still have to be scored. He's also an excellent athlete. Not fast but tireless. A for his passing, he can improve granted but he is on the ball so often, and always trying things, that he is bound to make errors. The thing about Joey is that if he's a bit of you notice because he never hides no matter how hard the going.
Manwell Pablo Posted 8 March 2006 Posted 8 March 2006 A few name I'd look at if I was in charge: Skacel-Hearts http://www.soccerbase.com/players_details.sd?playerid=34289 Pearson-Celtic http://www.soccerbase.com/players_details.sd?playerid=24315 Fletcher-Hibs http://www.soccerbase.com/players_details.sd?playerid=38103 Sproule-Hibs http://www.soccerbase.com/players_details.sd?playerid=40935 Beuzelin-Hibs http://www.soccerbase.com/players_details.sd?playerid=34475 Naismith-Kilmarnock http://www.soccerbase.com/players_details.sd?playerid=40935 Invincible-Kilmarnock http://www.soccerbase.com/players_details.sd?playerid=21290 Smith-Aberdeen http://www.soccerbase.com/players_details.sd?playerid=16778 I know they're all from Scottish clubs and some of them may need a bit more time, but thats the only place we can afford to look! Ric Flair Posted 8 March 2006 Posted 8 March 2006 i think we can there are alot of ppl in leauge one we can get e.g neil danns for colchester Does Neil Danns have a clause in his contract that means he can leave for free then? Bollocks has he, therefore we can't.
Jimmy Posted 8 March 2006 Posted 8 March 2006 we already hasve the perfect replacement, its just he's injured at the moment, joey has played well but has not been as important to us as stearman or mccarthy, i wish him well but he wont be missed as badly as people are making out, if he hadnt scored that 1st 1 on saturday no1 would be asking these questions
Ed 1 Posted 8 March 2006 Posted 8 March 2006 Tom Huddlestone on loan from Tottenham. Was on loan at Wolves earlier in the season, maybe a similar arrangement would be possible? Looks a class act for the England U21s in my opinion.
MrsJohnMurphy Posted 8 March 2006 Posted 8 March 2006 the sheep are signing michael mcindoe from doncaster he would have done for me
Cobbo Posted 8 March 2006 Posted 8 March 2006 A fit Weso is actually a far superior player to Joey. Would prefer them together but that's not to be. Promote Levi to centre mid and we will have the smalles midfield partnership ever

Weso as replacement is theoretically a good idea however we don't know when he'll be fit, if when he's fit he'll still want to play, if he wants to play whether he'll be the same player and if he'll be able to play 50 games next season. If he is the same as this season then he'll be able to take over Joey's main duties well (tackling, winning possession, keeping the ball, putting passes together) however the two things we're going to miss Joey for most (as already mentioned) are his goals and his assists and I just can't see that Weso will be that kind of player, especially at 18.
Nationwider Posted 8 March 2006 Posted 8 March 2006 the sheep are signing michael mcindoe from doncaster he would have done for me McIndoe's a good player, but I can't see him having any impact at the top end of the Championship. He's hardly in the Joey mould either.

Well Weso is a better player already and if a manager could get the most out of Williams or Hughes they are no worse than Joey, they both have more ability! As i say, I applaud his hard work and am pleaed he has performed above his station for us this year. However, lets not re-write the history books and pretend this guy is as good as Muzzy Izzet or something. It will take a good signign to repalce him but we are not lookign for a genius here.

I know Weso is a better player than Gudjonsson, I said that even before any of you had seen him play a first team game but I can't see him being a goalscorer, but I might be wrong. Weso's attributes are to break up play, receive passes and move the ball on effectively and never let the opposition settle. He is a box-to-box type player but is more disciplined than Gudjonsson which means he probably won't get in to the positions Joey finds himself in which lead to goals either scored or set up by him. What concerns me is that our wingers don't score goals, so you need someone other than the strikers to score a few and that's why we will need an attacking midfielder to play alongside Wesolowski (assuming he recovers from his injury and doesn't have set-backs next season). Can we find an established goalscoring midfielder for nothing or very little? Can Rob Kelly unearth a youngster from a premiership club, lower league team or from abroad? That's a massive gamble, that's why I think it's going to be VERY difficult to replace Joey Gudjonsson for the money we have (zilch).
Jimmy Posted 9 March 2006 Posted 9 March 2006 come on ric its a broken leg not knee ligaments, ur acting like his career could be over, come next season he will be fine, the second break was unfortunate and nothing to do with the 1st.

I hope so, because it will be a travesty if his career is effected by it. It shouldn't be a problem as you say, but it was a sickener when he broke his leg again.
