1884 Posted 14 March 2006 Share Posted 14 March 2006 What 23 players would you be taking to Germany if you were Sven? Here's mine.......... Keepers Paul Robinson David James Defenders Ashley Cole John Terry Jamie Carragher Rio Ferdinand Gary Neville Ledley King Jon Woodgate Midfielders David Beckham Steven Gerrard Frank Lampard Joe Cole Michael Carrick Scott Parker Sean Wright-Phillips Joey Barton Kevin Nolan Strikers Michael Owen Wayne Rooney Darren Bent Jermaine Defoe James Beatie People in this text are the players which Sven has ignored up to now, but I feel they should have already been given the chance or should be given a chance. I've only included 2 Goalkeepers because it rarely occurs that we need 3! And no Peter Crouch because he's shite

Nationwider Posted 9 April 2006 Share Posted 9 April 2006 Why pick 6 strikers? 2 of them will get NO playing time. If Crouch is your target man there is no point in taking Beattie! I wouldn't play all six at the same time. I couldn't be arsed to take another midfielder at the moment as none of the rest really stand out. Parker's a no-no, Jenas I'm just not fussed about and Lennon/Downing/Richardson/Barton aren't quite the finished article either. In any case, King and Ferdinand can play DMC, or Rooney could play out wide (admittedly not ideal, but I'd rather play Rooney anywhere than have Richardson in my team). Even Bridge if necessary could play LM. 6 strikers. Yeah, a bit excessive, but in knockout tourneys, you tend have to change things around more up the pitch than at the back. If Crouchie gets a knock, where's your big man? I'd gamble and take both as they're both playing well.
C-man Posted 9 April 2006 Share Posted 9 April 2006 In my squad, I have included 3 Goalkeepers, 5 Centre backs, 4 Full backs, 6 Midfielders and 5 Strikers, which give a total of 23 Players to go to Germany this summer. Goalkeepers Paul Robinson - England's best goalkeeper by a distance. David James - Calamity James sneaks in because he's a good shot stopper. Rob Green - By no means brilliant, but who else have we got? Centre Backs John Terry - No explanation needed. Rio Ferdinand - On his day he's magic. Jamie Carragher - Can play full back as well, and he is a great defender. Sol Campbell - If he is mentally and physically fit, and gets some game time for Arsenal before the end of the season. Ledley King - He's useful if he needs to drop in the holiding role in midfield, and has played well for Spurs all season. Full Backs Ashley Cole - He goes, fit or not. Gary Neville - Shit, but our best right back. Wayne Bridge - Richard Stearman - Midfielders David Beckham © - Self explanatory. Steven Gerrard - World Class. Frank Lampard - World Class. Joe Cole - Tricky, but he's not the finished article Shaun Wright-Phillips - Pace, but he's not the finished article Kevin Nolan - I would pick him because he's been outstanding for Bolton for several seasons and deserves a chance. Strikers Michael Owen - World Class, if he's fit. He'll go, fit or not however. Wayne Rooney - World Class. Peter Crouch - Tall, useful if we need to start playing long balls. Jermain Defoe - Needs first team football between now and the end of the season if he wants to go to Germany Darren Bent - 5th choice striker in my eyes. The reason i have used italics for many of the players above is because there is a doubt about there fitness, doubts about whether they are good enough and doubts about whether Sven will open his eyes and see who is playing well, and who isn't. I would not take the following players. - Michael Carrick - Overrated. - Jermaine Jenas - Sven bums him. God knows why. - Scott Parker - He has glandular fever. - Paul Konchesky - He's just shit. - Dean Ashton - Not good enough. - Andrew Johnson - Waste of space. He's fast, but he's not much else. I think Kevin Nolan deserves a chance, because he's been better than the above midfielders all season.
DaveyJ Posted 10 April 2006 Share Posted 10 April 2006 Goalkeepers Paul Robinson David James Scott Carson (seem as though third choice is rarely needed might aswell take the best prospect England has to gat some experience - that id unless Kirkland can stay fit for long enough to prove he might be good) Defenders Gary Neville John Terry Rio Ferdinand Ashley Cole Sol Cambell Jamie Carragher Ledley King Midfielders David Beckham Frank Lampard Steven Gerrard Joe Cole Jermaine Jenas Michael Carrick Scott Parker Shaun Wright-Phillips Strikers Wayne Rooney Michael Owen Dean Ashton Jermaine Defoe Darius Vassel (Matty Fryatt )

Ultra Posted 28 April 2006 Share Posted 28 April 2006 Goalkeepers Paul Robinson David James Robert Green We're very short on backup. Let's hope Robbo stays fit! Defenders Gary Neville John Terry Rio Ferdinand Ashley Cole Luke Young Jamie Carragher Ledley King (Sol Campbell on standby if King is unfit) Wayne Bridge Pretty solid, with plenty of cover for injuries/suspensions (which we may need in a seven-match campaign) Midfield David Beckham Steven Gerrard Frank Lampard Joe Cole Michael Carrick Shaun Wright-Phillips Jermaine Jenas (Phil Neville on standby if Jenas is unfit) Stewart Downing The first four are quality players (though Becks is living on past glories a little), but we could do with a little more backup. Would have included Kieron Dyer if he'd been fit. I suspect Sven may sneak in Owen Hargreaves (but I sincerely hope NOT!) Strikers Wayne Rooney Michael Owen Peter Crouch Jermain Defoe Again, plenty of quality but not much depth. We're praying that the first-choice duo can steer clear of injuries and/or bans.
