Benji Posted 5 April 2006 Posted 5 April 2006 Are grade A (excuse the pun) to55ers last year i did English AS and got B's and C's all year, then in august i find i got a U in one module, so i requested it back and it turned out they added it up wrong, missed out a whole section and so it went up to a C! So, good job i checked Well i did a biology paper in january, came out of it like get in that was easy, answered every single mark and only didnt understand 1 out of 81. Yet i get my results and i get 48? Ok so maybe i've gone completely wrong somewhere, so i've requested my paper back so i can look through it with my biology teacher and see what i need to revise for June. Well, there are about 5 marks where i've written whats in the answer sheet and it's been TOTALLY ignored, no tick or cross, what the hell? I've lost a mark for putting two letters out of place in a spelling which didnt make it unreadable or confusing with another word. And theres about 10 marks that i've written, i have learnt in the revision books (written by the examiners!!) and they've been crossed? What chance have you got if the revision books aren't even correct? So as you can guess i'm pretty angry, pi55ed off especially as its not the first time it's happened to me. But the whole system is a joke, why do examiners get paid per paper? They're only going to rush the marking and make mistakes. Take my maths paper, on my paper where they have added up my final score, it has taken THREE attempts to get the right number. So the person in control of marking my A level mahs paper can't count to 50.... Think of the thousands of kids that just accept their results, and it affects their whole futures, if this happens again in may with my finals what am i going to do? Too late as soon as the uni's don't let me in. The worst case we've had at our college is a girl in Music who is naturally extremely clever, she got a U in a module, had it re-marked and got an A. Really is laughable!! While i'm ranting, why the hell are there so many examining bodies? Some schools are bound to get easier papers than others because of this yet they are equal values in credit. All done
kenny Posted 5 April 2006 Posted 5 April 2006 Just imagine if you was at New College Benji. Its a disgrace my little brother went there and my little sister goes there, the place has gone beyond funny.
City Fan Posted 5 April 2006 Posted 5 April 2006 I ended up with a low D in an Economics Module in January (when all my other modules have been A's), got it remarked upto a high B. Why not just spare us the hassle and mark it correctly first time?
Parsons Posted 6 April 2006 Posted 6 April 2006 when i did my AS and A i was expecting C,s in all my subjects, then when the results came in to find that i had 2 D,s and an E i just accepted it and moved on. As i was not going to go to uni my Alevels didnt really mean to much to me but maybe i should of had them re marked....

Knighton Matt Posted 6 April 2006 Posted 6 April 2006 also half the time they charge you if you want your papers back also and if you ask them to be remarked They have to though otherwise everyone would ask for them to be remarked surely? By charging you provide a disincentive to ask for a remark. It would be nice if they got it right first time but they are human and could you imagine how boring it would be marking the same script a thousnad times over you're bound to make mistakes. No consolation I know over an issue as important as this but guys we all make mistakes.

They should take a students predicted grade from the schools and check against those...if the student asks for a remark and it is way out from their predicted grade...then allow the remark
Benji Posted 6 April 2006 Author Posted 6 April 2006 you only pay for a re-mark if the the mark doesn't change but if they add on more marks i.e. it's been marked wrong then you don't have to pay as it's their fault, which is fair enough
dynamite foxes Posted 6 April 2006 Posted 6 April 2006 Yeah I totally agree. My GCSE History bwent uo 12 marks on the re-mark and they managed to fock up my politics AS. What exam board were you on for those Benji?
Benji Posted 6 April 2006 Author Posted 6 April 2006 English was OCR Biology AQA so just as bad as each other
Hitesh Posted 6 April 2006 Posted 6 April 2006 They get paid sh*t loads and do **** all but mess up your career! Got loads of cases similar to yours and it even cost my mate a place at uni and he is now having to re-apply!
The People's Hero Posted 25 April 2006 Posted 25 April 2006 I did English As/A2 level thing. Did an exam, got 24%. Redid it the next year without having re-read the book in question, got 98%. Absolute joke. It wasn't just me either. Two others in my set got below 40% and both of them got above 80% next time round. I also did a history paper which got remarked from a fifty something to an eighty something. Never saw the transcript myself (that I can remember) but my history teacher just thought it was ridiculous so got it remarked. I don't think either of us expected it to come out THAT different thoguh!

Got loads of cases similar to yours and it even cost my mate a place at uni and he is now having to re-apply! The proper examiners are alright. It's simply a case of there not being enough properly qualified examiners so you get people who don't really understand the subject in question marking the papers. That is to say, if it ain't exactly what's on their 'model answers' sheet - it's wrong. Also, there are countless examples of them not being able to add up the marks!
Ricey Posted 25 April 2006 Posted 25 April 2006 I had 2 exams last year that I honestly thought I had got 2 easy A's on them, when I got the results back I got 2's C Judging by your experiences Benji I should of got the papers back to check them.
Milky Posted 25 April 2006 Posted 25 April 2006 reading this thread has really pissed me off big time. i hate not knowing if all my exam marks ever have actually been anywhere near what they should have been. i like everything precise, it makes me very angry.
holly Posted 25 April 2006 Posted 25 April 2006 thats why i failed maths then, dam should of had paper remarked!!
Anish Posted 26 April 2006 Posted 26 April 2006 I've never had a problem with examiners myself, so I'll be the lone ranger sticking up for them.
