Lineker's Left Foot Posted 16 May 2006 Posted 16 May 2006 In the last 10 years or so, apart from reaching the World Cup Final in 2002 after having an 'easy route', why do you think that Germany are now quite poor at football?? Some of their squad is so unrecognisable - I remember about 10 years ago you could still reel off Matthaeus, Bierhoff, Moeller, Haessler, Sammer, Kohler etc, but now it's a team of relatively 'unknowns' - what has happened????
MC Prussian Posted 16 May 2006 Posted 16 May 2006 Either they've gotten worse or the others have gotten better over the past 16 years. I'd go with the latter. And I'm glad Germany's no longer performing that well. After all the luck they had in the previous tournaments (reaching the final in Korea/Japan for instance), it's nice to see them struggling a bit. There's also fewer players under contract outside Germany. If you want to compare it to the past, the amount of quality strikers like Klinsmann, Bierhoff, Haessler, Jancker has diminished. If I'm correct, there's not one single German player in an Italian team this year, same goes for the Primera Division. Times are changing. For the Germans, too. And that's just fair enough.
shen Posted 16 May 2006 Posted 16 May 2006 They're suffering from having far too many foreigners in their league. Even midtable teams like Arminia Bielefeld are loaded with them. But this team has a lot of promess. Schweinsteiger, Ballack, Lehmann, Podolski, Klose and Nowotny are all top to world class players on their day...

It's a bit harsh to so make a statement "what have the Germans done apart from reach the world cup final " It's quite a big deal easy route or no easy route! There was always winning Euro 96 as well.
IDEA OR IKEA Posted 17 May 2006 Posted 17 May 2006 Phillip Lahm also quality left back. Exactly - not done that well, not sure how accurate these stats are but 1990 WC - Winners 1992 EC - Runners-up? 1994 WC - QF 1996 EC - Winners 1998 WC - Last 16 2000 EC - QF? 2002 WC - Runners up 2004 EC - Group stage? I would take that record over the last 16 years for most European teams, better than Englans QF/SF knock outs all the time, hardly bad form!
Ric Flair Posted 17 May 2006 Posted 17 May 2006 Don't write the Germans off this year, own their own turf with an easy group. I know they could then face us in the first knockout stage but we've had our fingers burnt aginst them many times before.
Ultra Posted 17 May 2006 Posted 17 May 2006 Even if (heaven forbid) they do knock us out I stilll think they won't win it. They'll be semi-finalists at best. If they'd had to qualify this time around, they may have struggled.
Dr The Singh Posted 17 May 2006 Posted 17 May 2006 There a tournament team, I got a feeling they will get past the group stages as it's a easy group but in the knock outs, the Germans will go through by 0-0 draw, and win on penalties. I think they will reach the semi's!!!

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh..................that's verging on the truth and truthspeak is no longer recognised as acceptable communication. People are being protected from the truth, it only causes trouble and social disharmony. It is being phased out. Grin and Blair (sorry Bare) It My Friend. Long live the BBC and JH.

EXACTLY!! don't write them off this or any year look at the last World Cup when they had a terrible squad but still nearly went all the way!!! on their own turf anything could happen
The Don Posted 23 May 2006 Posted 23 May 2006 I don't actually think that their squad is that poor. I just think that we don't know too much about theie players, as the bundesliga, is actually quite boring and we don't get to watch any of the games.

Only when the german's leave their own country do they get really recognised for the ability they have. I'm sure that if the german squad played in england or spain, we would really rate their players and think they'd have a great chance at the world cup. Or they could be just crap.....
