Knighton Matt Posted 8 August 2006 Posted 8 August 2006 Now admittedly I haven't seen much of the guy so this might be a tad harsh/premature... BUT... For me he was a massive let down tonight. In the second half after Williams had gone off Johnson was our anchor man in midfield...the necessary link between defence and attack. After we started hoofing it aimlessly time and time again I watched the midfield closely to see why it was they were getting bypassed. What I witnessed was baffling...All Johnson does is point where the ball should be played. Why does he not want it himself He didn't once make a run or gesture to the defenders that he wanted the ball. He just stood absolutely still pointing in all manner of different directions! If there's one thing I hate it's players with no balls who hide when the chips are down. Sadly Andy Johnson for all his passion to me is a fake. Never wanted the ball hence the constant hoofing. Opinions?
Simi Posted 8 August 2006 Posted 8 August 2006 good point raised.he will get more stick because he is not going to replace Joey.but the man did not want the ball tonight and as you said hence the hoofing to our tiny strikers although hume is good in the air! also we never contested the second ball!
andyh1884 Posted 8 August 2006 Posted 8 August 2006 The fact that from a distance he bears more than a passing resemblence to Lilian Nalis with that hair may have something to do with my dislike of him. That and the fact he's a bone idle ex-forest toe-rag
Ultra Posted 8 August 2006 Posted 8 August 2006 He wasn't on his own tonight. The rest of the midfield were equally dire. Williams made two contributions tonight - the free-kick early on and the foul which led to the winner. In between he was his usual anonymous self. He's a liability. Get rid. Sadly Hughes was no better when he came on. I can't recall one chance he created. The midfield as a whole sat far too deep. Kelly has to take responsibility for that. Maybe he should consider bringing Ray Graydon back.

Vardinhio Posted 8 August 2006 Posted 8 August 2006 Remember Andy Johnson is a textbook DMC. Part of the reason RK bought him here was so that Williams etc could play more attacking roles. The idea being that the confusion of "who was the attacking midfielder problem" caused with Joey Gudjonsson and his partners could be iradicated. It's my view that tonight the more attacking componenets of our central midfield unit (i.e. Williams and Hughes) did not push on or create enough, especially considering we were 0-1 down.
Ultra Posted 8 August 2006 Posted 8 August 2006 Ray Graydon left and it was his descion, he aint coming back. On the evidence to date, the replacement isn't up to it. We need an old hand to guide Kelly and the players.
OBO Posted 8 August 2006 Posted 8 August 2006 Boy do we need weso back!!!!!! I was thinking the same thing. The way things are going he may have a lot of people's hopes pinned on him - hope he lives up to it!
Simi Posted 8 August 2006 Posted 8 August 2006 Williams was one of our best players tonight and Johnson was nowhere. did rob kelly say Gareth Williams has picked up a nock? any ideas how long he will be out for? hope he is back for saturday. Johnson hopefully will gradually settle into his role.i think he has jus recovered from injury so give him a chance.
Simi Posted 8 August 2006 Posted 8 August 2006 I was thinking the same thing. The way things are going he may have a lot of people's hopes pinned on him - hope he lives up to it! that will not help the young lad.to much pressure on him will result in him playing poor.but i would still put him in the team because he will create more chances and play with no fear.

The bloke's 32, if he hasn't worked out what's required to play centre mid by now then I don't fancy his chances of making much of a go of it here!

Polyphonic Posted 8 August 2006 Posted 8 August 2006 I'm not sure Tiatto had any balls for awhile either. That'll teach him to get near the goal!. I am afraid seeing Tiatto suffer was the highlight of the game for me ...
Thracian Posted 8 August 2006 Posted 8 August 2006 The bloke's 32, if he hasn't worked out what's required to play centre mid by now then I don't fancy his chances of making much of a go of it here! For God's sake he's only just joined the club. Fans have been desperate for experience and although I suggested a couple of MILFS from down the road what we got was a 32-year-old veteran campaigner who needs another month at least to oil those old sinews cos people from the Black Country habitually suffer from rust.. Give the guy a chance. He's got a lot of names to remember for a start and it is not so easy as you get older, Pete. The time to start complaining is..well there isn't a time to start complaining cos we're in this together, don't you remember?. We've had this reactionary nonsense before - it's even harmful to the young players but we don't mind that so much because they've not cost a lot of money so they can't really be good enough anyway. RK's bought Johnson here to play at least the 30 games a season he wants out of Tiatto and he's the manager so he should have his way. If it doesn't work out then there's always the next 30 and the tempo will perhaps be a little easier in Division One and better suited to the more mature player. So while you might think you know best RK is really the one thinking ahead to the football we'll be playing in 12 months time. And not a lot of people know that.
Ricey Posted 8 August 2006 Posted 8 August 2006 I thought AJ was poor tonight, bar a few decent moments of defensive midfielding he looked slow, and as KM states, not very eager to recieve the ball and get things going. Mind you Williams is the same in that respect.
Shum Posted 9 August 2006 Posted 9 August 2006 There was too much ball watching for me last night, lots of moments when the ball was bouncing around and no one knew who was going for the ball. Very dissapointed in AJ so far, GW showed a few nice one touch passes, and it doesn't help having 2 defenseive players on the flanks. After only seeing Weso a few times, we need him back big time.

only-dreemin Posted 9 August 2006 Posted 9 August 2006 If AJ was any good do you think a championship rival would have let him go?... He's a duffer i'm afraid... Rob Kelly has got a long hard season ahead, these plums that he puts out aren't helping his cause....
Daggers Posted 9 August 2006 Posted 9 August 2006 The Williams-Johnson partnership is the fundamental root of our problems. They don't appear able to hold the ball, they sit too deep and neither of them fancy running that much. I like Williams, but he should be sitting further forward. I don't like Johnson, he should be bollocked most severely at training today. I'd play Tiatto in a defensive midfield role to support Williams going forward. Johnson, well I'd have him going for the half-time oranges until he can demonstrate a willingness to enter into the game.

There is an issue with the midifeld but i'm not sure it's the personnel other then the fact we play with no width, but it's more so the tactics, the gap between forward line and midfield is huge, with too many defensive midfielders playing there is a reluctance for them to push forward, hence we play a in a defensive manner and isolate our forwards. Kelly is an intelligent man, he obviously plays the players that suit his style of play!!!!
Katy Posted 9 August 2006 Posted 9 August 2006 Did we not bypass Williams and Johnson anyway? Indeed! Ive got an idea lets hoof the ball upfield to the smallest player on the pitch who is being crowded out by 3 strapping defenders...oh yes, sorry that's what we were doing Apologies to Steven for the sarcasm
Master Fox Posted 9 August 2006 Posted 9 August 2006 What I've seen of Andy Johnson so far my opinion of him is rubbish! I think he lacks awareness, creativity, skill, pace and passing abilities. As soon as Weso is fit this long haired headless chicken should be instantly removed from the first team and sent out on loan to Boston Utd.
