Jon the Hat Posted 4 September 2006 Posted 4 September 2006 A few Steve quotes to remember him by, including a very useful definition of "CRIKEY!" He won't be forgotten in a hurry.
Maybes Posted 4 September 2006 Posted 4 September 2006 This guy was a legend. he will be sorely missed. A truely great guy.
Knighton Matt Posted 4 September 2006 Posted 4 September 2006 Can only echo those thoughts stated already. Great passion for both his work and life and will be sorely missed.
Phube Posted 4 September 2006 Posted 4 September 2006 I've dived with Rays a number of times, and they really aren't a problem. From what I hear the reason he died was that the spike either peirced his heart or got very close. That is probably a world first, and only happened because he got so close. As always for recreational diving, look but don't touch and you'll be safe. Just to add some stats: Only 3 people have ever died of a Stingray sting in Australia... Steve Irwin being the third!!
Bert Posted 4 September 2006 Posted 4 September 2006 When i heard he'd been killed by a stingray i thought this was a wind up! Sadly it isn't. R.I.P Steve Irwin.
Thracian Posted 4 September 2006 Posted 4 September 2006 My wife watched his programmes at every opportunity. Deeply saddening news. RIP.
Head Honcho Posted 4 September 2006 Posted 4 September 2006 Just to add some stats: Only 3 people have ever died of a Stingray sting in Australia... Steve Irwin being the third!! I would have been worried if he'd have been the first!

Apparently only one person has died from a Stinray attack (before Irwin), back in 1945. That's according to the BBC article that was posted earlier in this thread.
Newcastle_Fox Posted 4 September 2006 Posted 4 September 2006 RIP Steve Irwin. Just watched his documentary where he went in search of the top ten deadliest snakes in the world and handled all but the most deadliest which licked him on the face. Was on uTube if anyone is interested 3 x 10 mins parts of the show. Great guy and will be missed lots and lots
Jay Posted 4 September 2006 Posted 4 September 2006 The bloke was a legend of the highest order not just because of his style but for the work he did for Australia and wildlife throught the world!! I think it's safe to say this news has shook half the world but his legend will live on!! I imagine his family and friends will carry on the good work he has started but our thoughts should be with his wife and 2 kids tv star or not it's the worst thing that can happen to a family!!! RIP Steve!! a true Legend!!
lcfc_jme Posted 4 September 2006 Posted 4 September 2006 Great bloke, did a lot to promote what he believed in, and did it well too. After all of the crocodiles n poisonous snakes he wrestled with and survived against, it had to be a timid fish that killed him. Sad loss, unfortunate and rare way to go out. R.I.P. My condolences go out to his family at this sad and difficult time.
golden gordon Posted 4 September 2006 Author Posted 4 September 2006 sorry but the jokes have started quote " SHAME ABOUT STEVE IRWIN, BEING AUSTRALIAN HE SHOULD HAVE KNOWN TO WEAR MORE SUN BLOCK TO PROTECT AGAINST HARMFULL RAYS"
lookwhaticando Posted 4 September 2006 Posted 4 September 2006 Dedicated. Passionate. Quite Eccentric at times. He was truly commited to a great cause, in protecting what wildlife we have, in the hope of preserving nature for as long as humanly possible. He can be credited with raising the profile of wildlife protection - his audience was, afterall, a global one. He was brilliant at what he did - and he even managed to entertain while conducting serious business. A great many in so many senses, yet his life has come to an end so prematurely - at only 44 years of age. Unfortunately, the term 'only the great die young' has been exemplified again today. He died today doing what he loved - a fitting end, I suppose. Quite surprising in some way that his life should be ended by a 'mere' stingray when he's made a living out of wrestling and handling much bigger, more dangerous animals. Our thoughts are with the family at this tragic hour. R.I.P Steve Irwin (1962-2006).
Tommeh Posted 4 September 2006 Posted 4 September 2006 Heard the news this morining very saddening. R.I.P steve Irwin aka the Crocodile Hunter
Guest Gist Posted 4 September 2006 Posted 4 September 2006 R.I.P I was so shocked when I found out never expected it even when he tackled big and more dangerous animals.
lcfc_jme Posted 4 September 2006 Posted 4 September 2006 R.I.P I was so shocked when I found out never expected it even when he tackled big and more dangerous animals. The general consensus is that nobody expected it, because they, like he, believed he was immune to getting hurt by any of the animals that he dealt with, especially the "timid but poisonous" stingray fish.
filbertway Posted 4 September 2006 Posted 4 September 2006 RIP A sad loss and I offer my condolences to his family. True Legend.
andrewsnaith Posted 4 September 2006 Posted 4 September 2006 I was shocked to hear this morning that Steve Irwin had been killed by a sting ray. I mean, i also half expected something like this and swear ive said in the past at least a hundred times "He's gonna get himself killed one day" but netherless it was still a shock to hear it when it actually happened! A real sad day in the world! What a legend this guy was! I hope the world remembers all the cool and funny stuff the geezer did and hope people remember his great work he did for animals. Steve Irwin RIP
