Did darren clarke sink the winning putt at the ryder cup?

Don't think so.

I'm aware of his recent loss but were it not for that he wouldn't even be near the top ten for this. Would be a bit of a hollow victory if you ask me. I'm aware I may be swimming against the tide on this one though. Still think it shows what a pisspoor year UK sport has had.

Theres always one footie player in there It will probobly be JT or Gerrard for winning prem/ fa cup as captains. Jenson Buttons suppost to have done well in F1 this year so he could be an outside bet. Outerwise it could well be Darren Clarke.

Just perusing some betting markets. Christ...

The favourites for this are;

Darren Clarke -- Who??

Zara Phillips -- She'll win it because she's hotter than the Jock. ;) (not that she's done anything?!)

Andy Murray -- Sad state of affairs when he could be nominated. Little hater. :P

What have they achieved?!

What a desperately poor year for British sport.

What Andrew Murray has achieved is nothing short of miraculous!

His first season on the tour he goes from 374th in the world to 16th competes in 3 ATP finals winning 1 beating Hewitt in the final!

FFS at least give him some respect for that

You can also understand his ire at being labelled English by some ignorant journalists this being the reason for his "anyone but England" comment before the world cup!

I don't see why him being Scottish disadvantage's him for the award unless racism plays a part in the voting process!!!

The fact remains that if anyone had won anything in any notable sport then he wouldn't be in with a chance. It's not unreasonable to expect people who win Sports Personality of the Year to have won a major event. If Murray wins a grand slam event I'll be first in line to praise him and say that he deserves an award like this but he's on his way up in the sport and has won nothing of real consequence yet. Hopefully he will be a real contender on the back of winning a major tournament in the future, and have tough competition from a whole host of other sportsmen in the process.

I disagree the award isn't for the best sportsman/woman out there it's for the sportsman/woman the public deem to be deserving, being a winner should be taken into consideration but also being a winner shouldn't only be about how many trophies you have on your mantlepiece!

It might be about that this year but only because there are no outstanding candidates when it comes to achievement at the highest level.

Flintoff for the Ashes, Kelly Holmes for her double gold at the Olympics, Wilkinson for the Rugby World Cup, Radcliffe (2002 - 1st, Long Course, World Cross Country Championships (Dublin), 1st, London Marathon, 1st, 5000 m, Commonwealth Games (Manchester), 1st, 10,000 m, European Championships (Munich), 1st, Chicago Marathon), Beckham for England's qualification for the 2002 World Cup (captaining the 5-1 win in Munich and scoring that free-kick against Greece) possibly a slow year. 2000 Steve Redgrave for the Olympics and recognition of his previous achievements etc etc.

I reckon it'll be Darren Clarke this time around, 'cos of his loss and the way he played in the Ryder Cup. Monty Panesar 2nd and Crouch in 3rd :)

I think Darren Clarke will win it, even though this may sound awful i think a lot of people will vote for him for what he has been through, saying that he has my utmost respect for what he's done.

It's very hard to say who will win as it has been a poor year for Britishsport, I'd like to see Amir Khan get something.

Darren Clarke but if any of them need an escort I'll go for Zara Phillips!.

100% agree with your choice of Darren Clarke. What guts that man showed at the K Club. This award should not just about being a winner at their chosen sport but also being a winner as a human being....

I think some people on here are underestimating the death of one's wife....especially to come back to such an intense competition for basically a whole week and perform at World class level...

for me he is a total sporting HERO!!
