Manwell Pablo Posted 22 November 2006 Posted 22 November 2006 I thought Rowett had been forced to retire. There could be a thread in this I reckon. I wonder if Guppy fancies it? The TPH revolution at Braintree. Where's Stevenage? Would he have to move far? Hertfordshire I reckon. I'd say it's very worthy of a thread in general chat.
BartonFox Posted 22 November 2006 Author Posted 22 November 2006 1 piece of evidence that I will give Kelly is his transformation of Paddy Kisnorbo. Ok, so it was mainly just a position change that has bought this complete transformation, but fair play for playing him at centre half and fair play for re-building his confidence. Other than that, i'm struggling. Actually it was CL that put him there before he wen, had he done it earlier he might of survived a bit longer.
Ric Flair Posted 22 November 2006 Posted 22 November 2006 Actually it was CL that put him there before he wen, had he done it earlier he might of survived a bit longer. I've heard from a good source that it was infact Kelly and the other coahces that picked the team against Plymouth, Levein knew it was his last game and couldn't be arsed. But even so, Kelly saw the transformation through. I'll allow him that one. Still doesn't constitute being a good coach or manager. He probably is a good coach, he was highly thought of at Blackburn in their academy. But at a higher level perhaps he's been found out.
step Posted 22 November 2006 Posted 22 November 2006 Still no one has presented any evidence that RK is a good coach. Take a look at the situation at city. no money, limited quality and quantity of players. More to the point No one has presented any evedence that RK is a bad manager or coach

Jurys still out on him ATM IMO TBH, FFS.

But what choise has RK had he has no money

Babylon Posted 22 November 2006 Posted 22 November 2006 He signed Andy Johnson To be fair not many on here moaned when we signed him, infact quite a lot were chuffed. It does grate me when I see the same people slagging him off for signing him when they would have done the same at the beginning of the season. This isn't pointed at you by the way, I don't know whether you wanted him or not.

Anyone who had done any research and scouting in the past season or so would have known Johnson was a shocking purchase. Most fans went on the fact about 3 or 4 seasons ago he was an agile midfielder who mixed it up well. Yet, as soon as we signed him the comments the WBA fans made about him when he signed for us were exactly right. I often like to wait until I see a player before making judgement, but usually fans of the club the player have come from invariably have it right sadly.

I must say, I was alittle shocked at his signing, we needed experience but he has been out of the WBA frame for a while, and at his age, Johnson may never regain the form he once had (not that he was spectacular). Most of my family (in laws) being Baggies fans couldn't stop laughing!! Again, benefit of the doubt was given!!!

Babylon Posted 22 November 2006 Posted 22 November 2006 That's no different to a lot of other managers/teams Are we not the only team in the Championship this year not to pay any kind of transfer fee? I'm sure I read that somewhere. Our squad consists of the following transfer fees Maybury 100k, McCarthy 100k/200k, Hughes 200k, Williams Free/500k tribunal???, Hume 500k, Fryatt 350k rising, Hammond 350k. Our usual starting 11 cost about £1m.

Our usual starting 11 cost about £1m. We spent a fair amount the 2 seasons previous though and those players are mostly still with us. Look at teams like Burnley. Rarely have they ever spent any money on players other than when they've had to due to selling one of their best players. Luton, although are now below us. Have for the past season and abit been above us and again the only money they have ever spent is due to the loss of their best players for a sizeable transfer fee. We've had more money and spent more money on players than quite a lot of teams in this league in recent times and we still can't compete. It's a mixture of under-achieving and wasting money, I still think with the right manager and the right style of play we are only 2 or 3 players off having a squad good enough for the top 6.

Indeed, considering the upheaval when Levein arrived - and the signing of what was effectively an entirely new squad - it might be argued that Kelly's performance of taking two points more than Levein for the same number of games thus far is actually a small step backwards because the squad has been essentially settled under Kelly and he knew all the personnel when he took over. I couldn't agree more with your last sentence except that I'd just been putting my "retained" squad down for the arrival of Mandaric and came to the conclusion we really needed four players coming in and to shed about seven.

Well this is what you said in the thread I started when he signed. "Over the moon about Johnson at this current time. He's exactly the type of midfielder we needed and he can score goals along with being able to get stuck in and dictate play. He's over 30, but he still has alot of football left in him, pleased with that.
Ric Flair Posted 22 November 2006 Posted 22 November 2006 Well this is what you said in the thread I started when he signed. I didn't say I wasn't one of the fans who was impressed when Johnson signed. The fact was, I hadn't seen him play for a few seasons. Had I seen him play and had I perhaps spoken to some WBA fans then I would have thought otherwise. I've been guilty of getting the wrong impression on players many times before and sadly he's one of them.

I'm sorry but what players that cost us transfer fees are still with us? I couldn't see any in the squad list. I'm glad you brought up Burnley as an example, same manager for a good amount of time. Started off with very cautious defensive football. Each year they would wheel and deal, getting in one or two players to try and strengthen the team/squad. Same plan i'd imagine Kelly and the board had.
Thracian Posted 22 November 2006 Posted 22 November 2006 Well this is what you said in the thread I started when he signed. Sometimes a beer can look nice and still taste sour. I don't think anyone expects a manager not to make mistakes with his signings, selections or tactics. What's important is how quickly he recognises those mistakes and how quickly and effectively he reacts to put them right.

Sorry if I'm miss understanding but What players that cost us transfere fee's are still with us? plenty! Fryatt, 350,000 and rising Hume, 500,000 and rising Hammond, too much and rising Gareth Williams 300,00 from a tribunal. Sylla undisclosed. Hughes 100k Just off top'et me head. Maybury 50k Mcarthy 100k

Couldn't agree more, problem is Williams and Wesolowski who should be the starting centre mid pair have been injured all season long (not always at the same time). We are short on options because of the injuries we have had in the middle. Oh and kids don't count!!!!!

Johnson impressed me on friday, he looked like a more agile and stronger Lilian Nalis. I think he'll be a massive player for us this season and I hope either Williams, Hughes or Wesolowski can form a great partnership with him. LinkAlbeit in a friendly. I thought Johnson was an excellent signing at the time, and as Babylon said, so did a lot of other people on this forum. He was an integral part of the West Brom side that won promotion on 2 occasions under Megson. However, he was played in a 3 man midfield more often than not - in a 4-4-2 set up with Hughes, his lack of pace and fitness has been exposed.

You've already listed the players that have cost us money!!! But that's more money than a lot of clubs in this league have spent. Plus add in the money that has been wasted, £250,000+ for Gerrbrand, £200,000 for Peter Gilbert, £50,000 for Mark de Vries (although he did score 10 goals so that's not too bad). Burnley have had stability, but they are a small club who's expectations aren't the same as ours. They also showed signs of improvement during most seasons under Cotterill. I know it's easier to be complimentary about other clubs as we don't have to put up with the in's and out's everyday that get on fans nerves, but I could never see Rob Kelly doing what Cotterill has done at Burnley. Infact, he's had to do it this season and the small funds he did have has been mostly wasted on players we either didn't really need or on players that aren't good enough.
