Congratulations. You've just beaten Lemon Harpic to the "Most Sensitive Poster Of the Year Award"...

No way. LH wins that hands down. Shame there has to be a winner, though.

 Don't get me wrong I am sympathetic but come on things can't be as bad as what they've been used to in their native country!

There's no excuse for the alledged bullying thats going on, but this type of behaviour certainly isn't the right way to go about resolving matters is it?

Human nature i'm afraid is to get what ever they can!! If they believe by protesting etc, they can get more amenities or even a chance of staying, they will do.

Also, UK has always been a 'soft touch', i'm sure this type of behaviour will lead to negotiations and then to a compromise

Just to add, i agree, with your points and conditions they are in now, compared to what they were before, but as we have seen on many occassions that not all or legitimate asylum seekers and many are infact labour\work migrants in disguise!!

Hands down?

Number killed by September 1th terrorist attacks: 2,752.

Approximate number killed in holocaust: 11,000,000.

What Allen said (and, btw, still has not apologised for) is completely disgusting. If he were not an established and relatively popular member of FT, the backlash against his abhorrentl comments would be far less muted. I'm sure of it.

I propose that, as punishment, Allen is made to share his house with a family of immigrants.

Preferably left-wing immigrants. With guns.

How you can put those two numbers into context, I don't understand.

The Nazis were able to kill Jews, Communists, Liberals, Critics, Homosexuals and Disabled over a long period of time (several years during WWII). This controlled extinction stands in no comparison to a one-day attack, in which the number of casualties did not really matter to the attackers, as the act was predominantly symbolic.

Maybe that gives you an indication of how insulting and out of order you were?

I'm not going to apologise because it was somewhat tongue in cheek and I'd certainly never apologise just because we have a few sensitive souls on these forums.

The holocaust picture did take me back a bit and I'll admit I did find myself feeling rather embarrassed by my original comments.

Lets not let my original post overshadow the point of the thread.

If this riot had occurred in most of the countries where the detainees were from, you can guarantee there would have been more than a few fatalities.

There are many organisations protecting the rights of immigration detainees, rioting will not I hope get them anywhere, as The Singh said, the vast majority of them aren't even legitimate asylum seekers. They are just chancing their luck on the off chance that they may be allowed to stay.

I felt it needed clarification about "who" is remanded there:

BBC: Harmondsworth holds people detained by the Immigration Service as overstayers, illegal entrants or failed asylum seekers prior to their removal from the country.

It also holds a smaller number of detainees whose cases have not yet been determined but who are thought to be at risk of absconding or whose identities have not been established.

That said, no one deserves to be treated as an animal. The fact that these people are housed in such disgusting conditions reflects on us as a society...and that is not how I wish to be judged.

That report is over a year old and the inspection carried out in July was not the best but you have to remember much of the information gathered was by interviewing the detainee's so the report must be regarded as subjective at best.

Much of the press reporting has been from a detainee's point of view.

For instance:

More than 60% of detainees felt unsafe

Almost half (44%) said they had been victimised by staff

Detainees described custody officers as aggressive, intimidating and unhelpful

Your being detained against your own will, your not going to say it's a bed or roses are you?

I'd be interested to know a few of the custody officers comments but then that wouldn't be fair on the detainee's would it

I think the main arguement of the asylum seekers was that the officers treated them with very little respect and there was very little to do at that centre compared to the others.

Also, the inspectors gave the institute the lowest rating of any, it does have problems but non the less, the assylum seekers are kept in a safe environment in relation, but rioting and en-dangering other seekers will not help there cause!!

SwissFox, with all due respect, what the fυck are you talking about?

A one day attack in which the "number of casualties did not really matter to the attackers"? I suppose the Nazis were trying to minimize casulaties then, were they?

Please, please, please tell me you are not trying to argue that September 11th was worse than the holocaust.

Because that would just be very stupid.

Expect the next round of compensation court cases which the already overstretched taxpayer will have to stump up!!!

Calm down, sir. ;)

All I'm saying is that one cannot compare 9/11 to the Holocaust (hence no one can say that 9/11 was worse) and my question was what you actually wanted to prove/tried to achieve by quoting those two numbers.

Or maybe not.

My point in that thread was that September 11th (temporarily) produced an exiting possibility of mass social and political change. I did not call for the deaths of any Americans, and I expressed regret that innocent lives were lost that day.

By contrast, Allen has lent his support to the holocaust by calling for immigrants to be gassed.

At the very least, Allen has been 3,997 times as insulting and out of order as I.

Like I said, the reaction to our comments does not reflect how insulting they were, but rather how (un)popular the posters are.

On no account have I ever supported the Holocaust

I was merely refering to the way Saddam used to quell his people when they stepped out of line!

A slight difference methinks ;)

So if are bullied and mistreated they are supposed to accept it and not protest? Starting fires is a bit extreme I admit but if it makes people aware of the conditions they are kept under then some good may come of it. Those people are not criminals and it seems are beeing treated worse. Just because they are being ill-treated to a lesser degree doesn't make it any less wrong. Their only 'crime' is to want a better life for themselves and in many cases their families. Isn't this what every human being wants?

So you don't think it's a crime to fraudulently enter the country?

The detention centre is for failed asylum seekers awaiting deportation or for those awaiting appeals on their cases.

I agree there is no room for bullying but as I said earlier the report that mentions it is very subjective because most of the evidence was gathered from the detainee's.
