MY JOB

Recommended Posts

Sent off an application form yesterday for a job. Got a phone call this morning from the manager and asked if I was offered it would I be able to start without serving my notice at my present job. They must be desperate or its a crap firm. Meeting him tomorrow at the site where he wants to put me. Funny thing is it's a site that my company lost the contract to them so I know the site. Pays not so good but I may be guaranteed the hours and a regular site that I can get to so I'll know where I am each wek and can plan my outside work time better. There is also a shop on Evington Road that he said I might be able to do. They open all night apparently. I said I hadn't done retail but he told me my lisence covers it now. I thought a different one would be needed. Not too sure about it really. The company's from Nottingham so if they lose the Leicester sites I may be in the same situation as I am now. Their other sites may only be in the Nottingham and Derby areas. Still he sounded friendly enough on the phone. Times are awkward as well 3-3 shifts day and night. So got to walk home 3 in the morning or walk to work at that time. Its not too far really College Hall Knigton Road. Old University Residence that's up for sale. Choice is stay in my job doing short time for the forseeable future or take this one hoping it'll be OK and at the same time see if a better offer comes up. But how do you know that the next job will be better or worse.

Sod it I'm off to the Criterion for a CAMRA meeting.

Got a new dongle and it has a proper address but still having problems. Called a bloke that has done stuff on my PC before and he said it may be a driver. He's coming tomorrow to give my PC the once over and try and sort it out. Another £35 I can't afford. He always does a good job though.

Have you read enough?

I have 3 interviews coming up for graduate roles at global big guns which I have to prepare for cos I fooked up the last one...

..if during an interview the following question is posed;

'If you could go to dinner with any 5 people, living or deceased, who would you choose'

tips

DO CHOOSE NAMES OF THE FOLLOWING CALIBRE (Busniness tycoons or historically iconic individuals)

Churchill

Branson

McCartney/Lennon (the chance of the interviwer liking the Beatles is very high)

Duncan Bannatyne - **** from Dragons Den

etc

DO NOT CHOOSE NAMES OF THE FOLLOWING CALIBRE

David Brent

John Candy

Steve Coogan (as Alan Partridge)

Rik Mayall (as Richard Richard from Bottom)

Georgie Thompson from Sky Sports News (cos she's fit)

....

Also, never say that your dream job is to be a professional footballer, even if it is, the interviwer will consider you as 'immature' and you will not get the job. You should lie..."er yes my dream job is to be regional manager of errrr.. Nestle'..blah blah

Talking to somebody yesterday who said when asked at a job centre what job he wanted he said stone grindiing on a Caribean beach. The interviewer said to him you're taking the piss. He replied no, I'm not the sun would be good for my complexion and because I have injuries (arthritis?) to my hands and legs the job will be good for rehabilitation. He used to be a builder, now he tours pubs. TBH he was hoping a bit much that that particular job would appear in Wednesdays edition of the Leicester Mercury. I think he was told he was wasting their time. I can understand his reasons for naming that job but he wasn't being very realistic.

As for my new job if I get it. If they do keep me on the one or two sites and don't expect me to travel too far then I'll stick with it as long as they want me. Jobs are not easy to come by these days and I've found out apply for jobs is getting harder when filling application forms out.

Don't really know the people to have dinner with. I think I'd have a mixture of intelectuals financiers and comic geniuses. Spike Milligan top choice. Stephen King for advice on writing I will have to think about the others but John Lennon is a good choice. Mr Branson for his financial imput and some big bosemed sexy model for a bit of rough and tumble for the final course..

Do I get the job? :D

My job is fine but it involves driving to Nottingham and then back to Leicester tomorrow (snow or no snow).

NOT GOOD in this instance!

:(

I wish I could cancel...

What kind of grad jobs are you going for? Might be able to help you...

I got the job. How good it is I don't know but at the moment it's better than the hours I'm getting They want me to start Monday so they are desperate. The one whos a regular on the site has been doing extra hours to make up for the missing guard. It's the same sort of work and I'll still be a lone worker so it won't make a lot of differance except for me being on a regular accessable site and knowing what shifts I have to work and have off in advance. That is all I asked for and was promised from my present bosses.

Well done mate, James told me over the weekend that you had gotten out. He's now handed in his notice too as he also has a new job.

been there two days and already have been asked to do extra hours. Instead of 15 Friday night I have been asked to do 20. I may be mad but there is a reason behind my madness. It is a 2 man site and the bloke who does it with me has to meet a friend whose coming over from Germany. It was going to be Thursday but his flight changed. Anyway because theres just the two of us we can work the shifts between us. There may be a time when I need to arrive late or have a day off and I can ask him to do my shift. The company seem fairly flexable regarding this. The bloke has been doing 69 hours before I started and even came to see how I was doing yesterday. Not sure how I am going to get through the shift. b\ut when I used to do

10-10 I used to get up about 6pm and not return home until about 11am which is what I need to do. He said he don't mind if I turn up a couple of hours late.

Only thing is I was looking forward to more than 3 hours sleep on Sat before I listen to the City game for a change.

Grad jobs are so competitive mate. Much easier to go straight to an agency like I did - for Banking especially.

18 months in I am earning 10K more a year than my grad scheme friends in the same kind of roles.

If I had the same chance again I would not even apply for grad schemes. I had interviews at IBM & Bentley but eventually got a much better job at RBS!

Some people argue that going through the grad schemes you sacrifice greater short term earnings for earning more once you come out of the scheme. This will vary though from job to job.

I'd agree with monk, I skipped the grad stuff and went straight into a role - in financial markets too, so maybe this is particularly common in this industry.

Try a few agencies -

Robert Walters

Hays

Reed

Michael Page

Worth a look at the very least. If you go do admin in investment banking its a great starting point doing reconciliations or settlements. From there you are in charge of your own destiny really! You dont get the direction of a grad scheme but you get more money to start with and if you do your homework like myself and JtheB then you can get serious places/money rather quickly.

A very good website for jobs in Finance, if that floats your boat

thanks for moving my post. thought it had been deleted on the the grounds of persistant boredom. :D

Seriously its better here but did not know where the thread was..

Manager phoned me a while back and said he leaves it to the ones on the site to sort any variations in shifts. As long as the site is covered he doesn't mind.

I think all my updates are done with now. :D
