davieG Posted 20 March 2007 Posted 20 March 2007 Yet another arrogant Premier manager wants to use the Football League for their own selfish needs, who do they think they are? Not only that, it is totally illogical. Lets assume we let the Premier Reserve Teams into the Football League, forget for a minute the 20 clubs you have to chuck out to accomodate them. Well if the are as good as Mr Benitez believes surely they will all end up in the the Championship, and guess what that means they'd end up playing each other! So what's the gain, what's the fooking point. Oh and if 18 games a season is your problem why did you kick out all the Championship Reserve Teams? Link Benitez wants reserve team revamp Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez wants to field his reserve team in the Football League. Benitez believes the current reserves set-up in football is not beneficial to the youngsters and wants changes. He said: "I would like to see reserve teams of the big clubs like ourselves playing in the Football League. Why not if they have enough quality? "Our young players may have the quality but not the experience for the first team. They are only on the bench." He added: "That will bridge the gap between the youngsters and the first team. "If you do not give young players the chance to play competitive football and to learn things, things become impossible." Benitez managed the second string of Real Madrid in Spain where the B teams of the Bernabeu club and others are allowed to play in the lower echelons of the country's league football. Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has also stated he would like to put a side out in the Football League. "It is clear that the reserve system doesn't work, the reserve league is nothing," said Benitez. "You can see youngsters playing just 18 games a season, that is nothing. Certainly not enough for the development of these players. "It is something that we can improve in this country. Or if we do not change we will find other solutions, sending youngsters out on loan like I have done recently. "I do not want to see reserve teams with four or five senior men playing without passion. These games are for young players." He added: "I used to be the manager of Castilla, Real Madrid's reserve side, and I had players who were 18, 19 years old playing in the Spanish second division championship. "They were playing against men. They were winning and we finished sixth and fourth. The question is, what improves the quality of the players? "And I am not sure about them playing in League Two, either; they need really to be playing against good players, then they will learn more." Former Liverpool striker Michael Robinson, who is now a presenter on Spanish television as well as a part-owner in lower league club Cadiz in the country, is against the idea. In Spain, the B teams cannot be promoted and certain rules govern which players a side can use as a player named in the first-team squad of a major club cannot then play for the reserve team. "I think it's an awful idea, and another one of the great evidences where the rich get rich and poor get poorer," he said. "The fact that you can't go up and play in the same league as the first team creates all sorts of problems for the other teams. "How can you play in a competition under fair circumstances where no matter how well Real Madrid do, they cannot go up? So that affects their way of thinking. "Here in Spain you get circumstances whereby if big clubs want to take players from their second team or third teams, that means that particular team, when it plays in their respective leagues, become an easier opponent for the team they are playing."
Joe. Posted 20 March 2007 Posted 20 March 2007 It's a great insult to the football league teams... <_<

Flexx Posted 20 March 2007 Posted 20 March 2007 talking of arrogance, Cristiano Ronaldo yesterday He said: "Maybe some people don't like me. Maybe I'm too good." "For me, it is a penalty. Why when I am involved is it always polemic?"

Guest Gist Posted 20 March 2007 Posted 20 March 2007 Why don't he just send more of these players on loan?
Leonisco Posted 20 March 2007 Posted 20 March 2007 What a dick. I think that must be an even worse idea than having penalty shoot-outs to decide draws.
Webbo Posted 20 March 2007 Posted 20 March 2007 the only way you could make this work is to allow liverpool to buy a club like mansfield(who could be going out of business) and play their youngsters there. the upside for mansfield is that they'd keep in business, they'd see a better standard of football and probably have more success. the down side is that they couldn't enter the cups ( in case they drew each other) and they couldn't play in the same division, so there'd be a limit to what they could acheive. not sure i'd want it if it was my team, but it would be worth considering.
Daggers Posted 20 March 2007 Posted 20 March 2007 He added: "I used to be the manager of Castilla, Real Madrid's reserve side, and I had players who were 18, 19 years old playing in the Spanish second division championship. " "They were playing against men. They were winning and we finished sixth and fourth." There we go then Raffa - enter a Liverpool 'B' team into the Spanish Second Division. This said - it's been on the cards for ages...and I can't see many other ways for clubs to exist. Darlington should join with Newcastle and get the pick of their reserve team. At points this season I'd have been delighted to see us fielding the Arsenal reserves. It's going to happen - there's too much money available!
Sly Posted 20 March 2007 Posted 20 March 2007 With the financial plight of so many football clubs coming into question, I think a time will come when clubs within close proximity of each other will have to either ground share or simply merge with one another to stay afloat. Allowing reserve teams to join the league wouldn't eactly be fair on conference teams and one question no ones asked so far.....who'd go? Would you pay top dollar to go and watch your reserves playing away if the first team were at home? Maybe not heah!
Daggers Posted 20 March 2007 Posted 20 March 2007 ...Would you pay top dollar to go and watch your reserves playing away if the first team were at home? Maybe not heah! ...but imagine the scenario - A few years into the future when City are cresting the Premiership, Milan is worried - he's worried because he's running out of places to hide all of the TV revenue. Plus, he's got a full squad sitting around playing one game every other Wednesday against Coventry Reserves. "Ahh..." he says to himself and reaches for the phone. "Northampton Town? How's about I lob you enough cash to look after my reserves and field them? I'll provide you with some technical support and we're all laughing!" The Championship become Premier II while League 1 has a ceiling preventing any team from promotion. All teams in Leagues 1 and 2 have a parent club providing money, players and coaching staff. League 1 & 2 teams can still compete in the cups. I've been forecasting this ever since the Premiership broke away...it's not what i want to see, but I bet it is simply a question of 'when' not 'if'.
Geo V Posted 20 March 2007 Posted 20 March 2007 How we have so many clubs going within our leagues is simply amazing. Thats why our cup football is so succesful and thats why owners flock to these shores and managers come from afar, because our football is full of passion and many, even within the conference believe in the dream of playing the big boys or one day becoming one, just like Wimbledon and Wigan have done within my lifetime. People like Rafa mean well but he hasnt the foggiest about life outside the Premier. I am a big fan of the bloke as I think he comes across as a great manager to work for and his trophy cabinet also tells us he is a winner but he should button it when it comes to matters like this as he hasnt got a clue. Maybe a merger with a small team could work but this isnt Germany or Spain where clubs like Bayern and Read Madrid have sides playing in the lower divisions.

Manwell Pablo Posted 21 March 2007 Posted 21 March 2007 What a dick. I think that must be an even worse idea than having penalty shoot-outs to decide draws. You can't blame him, he's Spanish, it's what they do in Spain and it has a positive effect on their younger players. It'd never work but I can understand why he's saying it

It'd never work but I can understand why he's saying it I wasn't even aware they did this in spain! If he has seen it work there then it is understandable why he wants it over here but I'm totally against it.
Master Fox Posted 21 March 2007 Posted 21 March 2007 Mandaric supports Rafa's ideas. http://www.teamtalk.com/football/story/0,1...2008183,00.html Well that's ****ing great Milan, when we're playing League 1 football next season i don't suppose you'll be so supportive of the idea then.....??
Fez of Mahrez Posted 21 March 2007 Posted 21 March 2007 Let's be honest, we'd take one or two of Arsenal's young players. Why not stop there? Let's have three like Birmingham. Why not five? Why not eleven? Why not a whole squad? Why not change our name to Young Arse, play in red and rename our ground the British Airways Stadium. Gold medal to anyone who can spot my point.

Master Fox Posted 21 March 2007 Posted 21 March 2007 WHat is your point????? Yeah i missed it as well
Fez of Mahrez Posted 21 March 2007 Posted 21 March 2007 WHat is your point????? My point is that football fans are quite happy to take things when it suits them but tell the story from a different angle and extend it a little bit and suddenly it's sacrilege. We'd all love Denilson on loan next season. And Armand Traore and maybe Aliadiere etc etc.
