Not sure if you've noticed what with your crusades but we've got a manager who works with the players day in day out to do that.

He can do his job, I'll do mine and as long as he doesn't interfere with my business I'll not pretend like some that I know his job.

Thanks for that. I just wondered if perhaps you simply couldn't bear to write the names in of ex-Academy players.

In some ways I sympathise with what you say and will be much less inclined to pass critical opinion when the said manager/s show they can do their jobs properly by lifting us out of the quagmire which their uninspired and over-defensive policies have left us in.

You've only got to look at recent teams to know it needn't have been like that.

I didn't sneer at your coaching. Once again you are misquoting someone and misrepresenting my argument. The veiled point I was making (well spotted) was that your assumption that due to your previous coaching you know more about it than anyone else on here is one we've heard many many times and it leaves a sour taste.

I coach both cricket and academic subjects. I don't prepare to be amazing at either, but I provide a service and generally speaking, people tend to be satisfied.

That said, I don't come on here pretending I know which 8 year old cricketer is going to be the next best thing or which 5 year old girl is going to be the next poet laureate.

I've never felt comfortable with the idea of people coaching multiple subjects and was horrified when even my own mother was roped in to teach football at the school where she worked.

In my experience keeping on top of any subject was a full-time effort. And I wouldn't identify with not preparing to be amazing either.

If was always central to my approach that people should aspire to achieve heights they never imagined and that I should try my best to set an example.

That is why I got out immediately when my playing standard slipped for various reasons.

That is not to be critical. Different teachers have different approaches..

But it does illustrate that we are diametrically opposite in our thinking.

Coaching was never a service to me but an effort, even a crusade, to build something special.

I always hated "generic" coaching and did very little.

I had no motivation for coaching anyone who wasn't 100% determined to be the best they could be at a game although I could be thrilled if poor or modest players worked hard enough to achieve the exceptional, as sometimes happened and in dramatic fashion.

But most of my work involved ambitious individuals or selected squads of people aspiring to be champions in one sport or another.

There's not room for self-doubt and uncertainty with those people.

If the coach lacks conviction the team certainly will and I suppose conviction became an ingrained habit, rather like a soldier preparing his kit.

But that's a million miles from thinking you know better than anyone else. Results quickly provided the answer to that, whatever.

Indeed it is a curse of my life that I only remember defeats in detail and can barely remember anything about the victories. In defeat, I suppose, you immediately focus on the question why? In victory, you can head for the bar.

You've completely missed the point there and just started talking about what a 'good' coach does.

I was getting at the fact that because you've coached you believe your opinion as being better informed, more important and worthy of more attention than anyone else's.

I'd draw your attention to the last but one paragraph. If you choose to disbelieve it fair enough.

As for coaches/teachers, good or otherwise, each must live with their own approach which will doubtless depend on their motives for doing the job.

Stop wrecking my thread Thracian. This thread is for stupid talk, so get with the stupid, or Shoo.

Give it a minute, and there could be the old "Elvis Hammond is a big impact player!" line.

Surely that would count?

Me again - forgetting I'm playing football and throwing down one of my much-feared medium pacers.

And.... injured again.

.. Or just resting.

That should get in back in track.

Now let's see snaps of all of YOU in action.

Which beggers the question, just what I was doing trying to tackle you in the middle of a game of cricket.

Seeing as Manwell is trying to make me paranoid at the minute, I'm going to put my attendance and participation on temporary hold. I need assurances from Manwell that I am not going to be singled out for wild challenges and serious foul play from the Over 21's side. 'Cos I'm a bit worried, like.

Means nothing. I wear a hoodie. Therefore I must be a violent little asbo - a creature you oldies all live in fear of in this day and age.
