I'd like to state for the record that I think Newell would do a very decent job here and I don't think it would be a bad move at all to bring him in. Just because he's out of a job at the moment, people seem to think we can do a lot better. I struggle to see what Luton have gained by sacking him. Don't let your opinions be led by a shocking board of directors at another club.

Newell was sacked for drawing neagative attention to the club through the media, slagging the chairman off, poor results on the pitch, and apparently deciding that Lutons squad didn't need strengthening in January. So I wouldn't call it a "shocking" decision, how much can you let him get away with?

I reckon he'd do a job here though.

I agree.

Newell is a good manager, one of only a few in this division i'd want. He got Luton scoring a lot of goals, even when they struggled. He also knows where to pick up a bargain. He likes to buy young players and turn them in to quality players, Thracian's dream.

Whilst I think Newell would get us achieving better results and I feel he'd strengthen the squad effectively, I don't think he and Mandaric would get on for long.

Not a good partnership, IMHO.

That's what I thought at first, but I can't see how Mandaric and Redknapp got on really. I know they fell out and he ****ed him off, but how they got along in the first place baffles me. Newell isn't afraid to speak his mind and neither's Redknapp. I think Mandaric likes a manager who fights his corner, something Newell does a lot!

It would definately be a change from what Kelly comes out with each week after a defeat. Finally some honesty and a bit of passion.

I didn't say it was a shocking decision, I said their board of directors are shocking. He wouldn't have needed to speak his mind about the situation at the club otherwise (that accounts for the first two). Yes, results have been poor but I think any manager would struggle having to sell their best players. Personally I don't believe he was offered the money to improve the squad in January. To be honest he was probably so f**ked off with being messed about, he knew he was off soon one way or the other anyway. His attitude is obviously questionable but I'd rather have a controversial bloke who knows his way around the transfer market and can actually motivate a group of players ahead of someone like Bryan Robson for example who I feel would be like Kelly mk II.

Mandaric likes to be the manipulative media whore though.

As soon as Harry stepped out of line in the press, he was pushed out.

It was always alright when Harry was Mandaric's puppet to an extent.

I really don't think they'd get on mate.

Agreed their directors aren't the brightest, however I'd still say slagging off your own chairman to the media is highly unproffesional, do it in private by all means.

I don't know about the not being given any money part. He was handing out alot of new contracts in January which to me suggests that he thought the players he had were good enough for this level.

I do agree, I don't want a failed prem manager at this club.

All I can go by on the money side of things is what he's said. Might not be accurate but :dunno:

Newell:

"The reason we're in this position is because we've sold our best players," he said after the defeat to Hull.

"Where's the £9m gone? Give that to me and I'll get five experienced players in, I'll pay them fortunes and we'll get ourselves out of it.

"It takes three or four years to build a reputation as a decent manager and three months to lose that reputation. But if you take the four best players out of any team it will hurt them."

A few other fans might like it too should it happen.

Well if he wasn't given any money then fair enough.

If has and decided not to use it he's a fool!

Someone start a "Newell In" thread!!!!!!

Love the sexist comments and total lack of respect for authority!

Provided he a hard drinker he has my vote!

I bet he pisses most of his money up the wall on booze, fags and kebab's just like the rest of us.

Agreed. I just think managers 99% of the time will use all the funds they can get their hands on. O'Neill always said he would spend every penny he got. It's hard to blame Taylor for spending £23million. You can obviously criticise the way he spent it but any manager would use that sort of money if they had it.

Even Kelly, although he's had no funds in terms of transfer fees, has constantly been looking for new loan players when really he could have done with sorting out the underperforming players already here instead of spending more money we can't strictly afford to splash about on uninspiring signings that won't stay here.

The only thing that goes against Newell is that he did rinse Luton of money taking large slices from transfer fees (according to the Luton board)

I would imagine any astute manager with a half decent agent would have that in their contract and if it wasn't his choice to sell then he can hardly be blamed for his windfall.

Newell doesn't have an agent! :D

But if there's anyone to blame with that clause in his contract, it's Luton's board for giving it to him.

Having money to spend is a challenge but quite frightening. The downside gets so steep.

Spotting players and coaching/motivating them to reach higher levels is one thing but having to buy the best and rely on his not getting his head turned, not getting injured, not getting on with you, not getting negatively temperamental or not liking to move to a new area/country is fraught.

And when you make a mistake with millions it is not so simple just to discard that mistake and buy a replacement. The board don't like to see a potential multi-million pound asset reduced to a bit part player with the inevitable effect on his transfer value.

And of course, the money runs out just as easily when you have a lot as when you have little cos of the level you're competing at. Four purchases to a skint manager might empty the pot but four purchases at millions spends an awful lot quickly and soon gets the underwriter clamouring for a return.

It will be interesting to see how MON fares in the position of having some money at Villa where expectations are high but where the Premiership opposition is fierce too.

Far different that from being at Celtic where he might have been able to buy better than his opponents but where he only had serious competition from Rangers. Or from being at Leicester where any success was always going to be appreciated and a big bonus.

Not many good manager are going to want to leave their club at this stage of the season unless it's a manager from a lower league team. That's one reason why I think we should just wait until the end of the season to sack him. It just doesn't seem worth it. I'm 99% sure we won't go down. We're easily good enough ot find 4 points from a possible 21...

After watching the last 3/4 performances, he has to go now for me.
