Ric Flair Posted 17 May 2007 Posted 17 May 2007 Can someone help me please. I have a fairly new property and it appears that there isn't a phone line installed. BT charge £125 for a phone line to be installed, I just wondered if there were any other companies that install phone lines or whether I can someone to do it for me for free Cheers
lookwhaticando Posted 17 May 2007 Posted 17 May 2007 Don't suppose by any chance the house has Cable? I was going to suggest not bothering with a phone line at all, and just getting a VoIP (internet) phone instead. But if you don't have cable, you'll need DSL and that requires a phone line. Catch-22 really.

Katy Posted 17 May 2007 Posted 17 May 2007 Crikey that's crap. Do some research as LWICD suggests. Surely all newer properties have phones lines installed.
Master Fox Posted 17 May 2007 Posted 17 May 2007 No, there is no other option. You have to pay BT to do it.
lookwhaticando Posted 17 May 2007 Posted 17 May 2007 What the hell kind of property doesn't have phone lines!!??? Perhaps it's a high-tech house that's hooked up directly to the optical networks which my dad spent many years flogging in the 90s at great expense to the telecomms companies.
davieG Posted 17 May 2007 Posted 17 May 2007 Do NTL/Vigin Media require a BT line? I never paid any BT charges when I was with NTL. Not sure if they'd charge you either, their equipment use to comes free.
Ric Flair Posted 17 May 2007 Author Posted 17 May 2007 What the hell kind of property doesn't have phone lines!!??? Crikey that's crap. Do some research as LWICD suggests. Surely all newer properties have phones lines installed. Brand new built properties tend not to have phone lines installed apparently. Probably because it costs them to have them put in. Ridiculous really when you spend £120,000 on a property and the bastards don't even put a phone line in for you. I only want one put in for the internet as well!!

Webbo Posted 17 May 2007 Posted 17 May 2007 there will be a bt line to your house, bt charge you to connect it up.
lookwhaticando Posted 17 May 2007 Posted 17 May 2007 there will be a bt line to your house, bt perform open wallet surgery on you to connect it up.
hairy Posted 17 May 2007 Posted 17 May 2007 What the hell kind of property doesn't have phone lines!!??? No new properties have the final connection done. The electrician puts all the phone points in the house. BT runs a line from the nearest pole to a point on the front of your property. The electrician connects form that point to his master point and then you pay BT to activate the line from their exchange. It is so that you have a choice in your provider. But in reality you have no choice. Cable have no plans to extend any of its networks now or in the near, medium or long term future. So if you buy a new house you can forget it. Sorry Ric but you will have to pay. How come your on the net Ric without a line?
lookwhaticando Posted 17 May 2007 Posted 17 May 2007 How come your on the net Ric without a line? Wild guess here... he is/was at work.

So it is better for them to get it sorted rather than have 20 aerials on the roof and BT pulling all the ducting apart. As Ric has a house that he owns completely he is f'ed.
Daggers Posted 17 May 2007 Posted 17 May 2007 Do NTL/Vigin Media require a BT line? Nope. We haven't got a BT line - which is why we went Virgin instead of Sky...I couldn't believe BT wanted to charge seeing as Virgin do it for free! Anyways Rik...if you're too tight to spring for it then you're going to have to think laterally:

Daggers Posted 17 May 2007 Posted 17 May 2007 What kinda bandwidth can you attain on such a connection? It's all the phreakers hacking the line that would piss me off.
Bluefoxtim Posted 18 May 2007 Posted 18 May 2007 But you have to be in a cabled area for that, and I doubt they'd be cable if there's no phone line?? They'd? I suggest you take a peeky in your grammAr bible. 'They'd' can be a contraction of 'they would' and 'they had'. So unfortunately, your sentence makes very little sense.
