Manwell Pablo Posted 6 July 2007 Posted 6 July 2007 apparently Man u turned down our 3.5 million bid for Cristiano so I'm afraid we have.
dandannieldanok Posted 6 July 2007 Posted 6 July 2007 Is he still a West Ham player or is he unattached?
chili_con_carne Posted 6 July 2007 Posted 6 July 2007 Is he still a West Ham player or is he unattached? Unattached I think
teblin Posted 6 July 2007 Posted 6 July 2007 I think once newton is fit he'll do a job for us, still has pace he showed that in flashes last season. That second half against brum was fantastic. Puts a good ball in too, will have a target too hopefully.
Cheese Me Posted 6 July 2007 Posted 6 July 2007 Probably means that Stearman will be moved to centre back to compete with N'Gotty, Kisnorbo and McAuley leaving us any 2 from Chambers, Kaebi, Newton and eventually Gradel for the right hand side. Mattock and Morfaw for LB and Hayes and Porter LM. Or on his way perhaps? Can't see him getting into the side TBH
Durnerz Posted 6 July 2007 Posted 6 July 2007 Newton is good back up and better than any other option we have in reserve for the right wing if Chambers and Kaebi are playing considering Hayes isnt proven at this level.
escape2victory Posted 6 July 2007 Posted 6 July 2007 This is a safe signing from Allen. Newton is a steady eddy. Just relying on Ka'abi and Gradel for the right wing next season could be a big gamble as neither has played a senior game in England before. It may take Ka'abi 6 - 12 months to settle in and we may not see the best of him until the following season, and Gradel maybe isnt up to Championship standard just yet, so Newton gives us good experience and good back up on the right if the younger two struggle to make an impact. Maybe a season long loan is on the cards for Gradel ? Though just for the record I think Ka'abi is going to rip this league apart next season !
Geo V Posted 6 July 2007 Posted 6 July 2007 I think Newton did OK at imes last season and was the best of the loanees (although that doesnt say much). I suppose he will offer us more than say a Trevor Sinclair who was also released due to his age but its probably a ideways step as deals go unless he wont be a guaranteed starter. Good squad player maybe?
Lillehamring Posted 6 July 2007 Posted 6 July 2007 some perspective here - last season, he was one of our better midfielders - this season, a handy squad player... ????
Toby or not Toby Posted 6 July 2007 Posted 6 July 2007 could be back up signing, for when kaebi goes on international duty when we still have games
pazey69 Posted 6 July 2007 Posted 6 July 2007 Im pretty sure Kaabi's best position is an attacking right back, a bit like Roberto Carlos at left back. Im not too pleased about Newton coming though, hopefully he is just here as a back up right mid and another first choice is signed soon yeah i agree, not to pleased with newton to be honest. hopefully you are right and he is just back up.
brookfox Posted 6 July 2007 Posted 6 July 2007 Sounds like it's pretty much confirmed... Leicester City boss Martin Allen hit double figures on new signings today by securing winger Shaun Newton on a one-year deal from West Ham United. Newton was a big success while on loan at the Walkers Stadium last season. Now he has been persuaded to return on a permanent basis and become Allen's 10th new recruit. The City manager said: “I think he will do a good job for us. I watched a video of his game against Birmingham here last season and I think, in no uncertain terms, that that is what I want on a regular basis.â€
Fez of Mahrez Posted 6 July 2007 Posted 6 July 2007 Newton wings in to make it 10! by Bill Anderson Leicester City boss Martin Allen hit double figures on new signings today by securing winger Shaun Newton on a one-year deal from West Ham United. Newton was a big success while on loan at the Walkers Stadium last season. Now he has been persuaded to return on a permanent basis and become Allen's 10th new recruit. The City manager said: “I think he will do a good job for us. I watched a video of his game against Birmingham here last season and I think, in no uncertain terms, that that is what I want on a regular basis.†Newton, who was out of contract at Upton Park, proved popular with the City fans during his short spell in a team which was struggling. However, there is a possible exit from City with defender Alan Sheehan pondering an offer to go on loan to Lincoln City for the whole of next season. So the first full week of pre-season training ended as it had begun, with another addition to the squad, and Allen said: “I came up to Leicester last Monday straight from the airport after my holiday and I have not been home since, so I am looking forward to seeing my family again. “No doubt my phone will be ringing all weekend, though, as there are still a few more deals in the pipeline.†City have offers on the table for more players, but are keeping their targets close to their chest as there is competition. The increasing new arrivals shows the backing that Allen is getting from City chairman Milan Mandaric. But having already talked about how different the City scene is from his former clubs, in terms of facilities and support staff, does Allen feel under pressure to deliver the goods? He said: “This isn't pressure. Pressure to me is if you are a manager and you have to work with a small squad and no money to spend on new players. “This isn't pressure, this is great and what I always dreamed of when I set out as a manager.â€
potter3 Posted 6 July 2007 Posted 6 July 2007 Here's the Mercury article Oops too late http://www.thebluearmy.co.uk/details.asp?b...6269754|p|536|0
sdb Posted 6 July 2007 Posted 6 July 2007 good signing i think, energetic and experienced. was one of our better players whilst on loan - not that that was hard, but he looked like he cared and that should stay the same if he;'s on a 1 year contract and essentially playing for an extension
davieG Posted 6 July 2007 Posted 6 July 2007 I think I must have been viewing a different player because although he showed definite signs of some ability he looked eith unfit or couldn't be asked half the time, in the Barnsley game he disappear after 15 minutes until 15 minutes from the end, now whether this was fitness or attitude I don't know but he will certainly need to improve. Having said that I can only see him playing initially when Kaebi's still settling in when he's not available on International duty, which sounds quite often.
teblin Posted 6 July 2007 Posted 6 July 2007 Could the os be waiting to put of couple of signings up?
Wilkesy Posted 6 July 2007 Posted 6 July 2007 Could the os be waiting to put of couple of signings up? Maybe but they are taking their time!
FleckneyFox Posted 6 July 2007 Posted 6 July 2007 they'll proborbly just mix and match Allen will start people where he thinks they are strongest and if they are not performing he'll move them around i think we're lucky cuz alot of our players can play multiple positions i think it will start now if the newton thing is true and we get Hendrie + Lisbie (that would be our last 3 signings) Nielsen Kaebi N'Gotty Kisnorbo Chambers Newton Kishishev Hellings Hendrie Hume Lisbie if the Job deal is still possibly on then him next to Hume definately im a bit dissapointed that we have no proper 20 goals a season strikers in the squad
Thracian Posted 6 July 2007 Posted 6 July 2007 Shaun Newton today became Leicester City manager Martin Allen's 10th signing.Newton, who played for City on loan at the end of last season, was out of contract at West Ham and has signed a one year deal. For full story see today's Leicester Mercury. Well the bit about Newton being a "big success" is bullshit. He was a bit part player. He reminded me of what Sir Stanley Matthews' said about seasoned professionals - although never once outstanding he was always fairly consistent. He wasn't much of a goal threat, didn't make many and Max Gradel, a guy who's hit some 35 goals in two seasons from the right wing for the Academy and Reserves, will hardly feel encouraged. It's not as if Newton's tracking back is so much better than Gradel's. In fact the only notable thing I saw Newton do in a defensive position was give a goal away. He's a clever enough player. He gives the ball early and quite subtly at times. But we need wingers with pace who can score and make goals. Newton has shown no evidence that he can still do that so I see no great benefit to this. (-0.5/total +11.5). As for Sheehan's likely departure he'll be relieved, I am sure, to get some football. He never had fair opportunity at Leicester yet still produced the two or three best performances at left-back which I've seen from a City player these last couple of years, including the one in the home win over Sheffield Wednesday after which he was dropped for no reason I ever understood. That said he's had niggling injuries, never found favour again after being sent off against Crewe, and I've not seen enough of him in the last 18 months to know if he should have been in contention first team wise. Good luck to him anyway. I think Lincoln will have made a good loan signing.

The Stig Posted 6 July 2007 Posted 6 July 2007 He isn't bad, but isn't brilliant, squad player me thinks.
lildave3 Posted 6 July 2007 Posted 6 July 2007 Got no problems with this signing at all. Showed some decent stuff at times last season.
Geo V Posted 6 July 2007 Posted 6 July 2007 When I saw him he played well and didnt look totally fit. Lets see if he gets his real edge back after a tough pre-season. BTW at the over the top build up on him! Apparently we all thought he was almost genuis level as a footballer and was a huge favourite?!!
