Keepers

We’ve got four keepers…

Douglas:We’re using him as an emergency goal keeping coach at the moment, but that doesn’t (or at least I hope it doesn’t) seem to detract from the fact that he’s surplus to requirements and he’s not going to get anywhere near the first team even if we cant get rid.

Henderson: Not involved in our pre-season, persistent rumours that other clubs are interested in him. His form’s been inconsistent, sometimes he’s great but for the most part he’s pretty sketchy.

Logan: Like Henderson he’s inconsistent with the occasional flashes of ability but at other times he’s a down right liability!.. but his big advantage over Henderson has to be he’s still pretty young and as a result there has to be the potential for him to improve and with any luck overcome his inconsistency.

Neilsen: Almost a complete unknown, word from the early pre-season games sounds pretty concerning and suggests he represents no kind of improvement on what we’ve already got at the club… but as I say we’ve seen very little of him and his record in Denmark seemed pretty solid.

So that leaves us with one player who’s already been effectively written off (Douglas), one who seems to be being marginalised (Henderson) and this leaves us with one player who’s displayed ability but has also shown himself to have some serious flaws but is still young and has potential (Logan) and one who’s a big unknown and hasn’t convinced on what little we’ve seen of him so far (Neilsen).

Admittedly I haven’t taken into account players coming out the academy, but looking at the keepers we’ve got none inspire a great deal of confidence, with two already effectively being sidelined… so does that mean we should be looking at investing in a strong keeper as one of the “3 or 4 signings†that MM talked about?

Sidelined - Hendersons playing tonight!

Nor do we particularly need to - it's the least of our problems.

I disagree, a solid dependable keeper is essential to mounting a serious challenge in any league, confidence spreads through the team and if the keeper's a flapper (which Nielsen sounds like) then defenders are uneasy and not performing at their own best.

Our recent succesfull teams all had strong keepers IMO ie Poole, Keller, Flowers, Walker.

TBF Ive not seen Nielsen play yet but from what ive heard on here im worried!!

Saw that... then again before tonight "sidelined" would have been a fair description, i retract that comment for now...

Logan and Henderson are dependable enough...especially when I think back to some of Walker's cock-ups.

Your forgetting… we’ve not allowed to remember how inconsistent Walker could be anymore.

Although I think its debatable weather his inconsistency could be compared to that of Logan and Hendo… though I’m sure you’ll take issue with that. :)

Ok maybe Walker was a bad example, Milans obviously concerned about Logan/Hendo hence the signing of Nielsen.

I just think we might regret not signing a proven keeper (i dont have an example tho!!)

I think this is a bit harsh on Neilson seeing as we hardly know the bloke. Pre-season is not a full competitive game and no one wants to get injured. I would imagine he will be the first choice. I would like to see him play some league games before the rest of you sentence him to a public stoning!!!!

Rab is well past his best but is unlikely to move unless he gets a good pay off.

Henderson is likely to be second choice.

We have been blessed with some quality keepers over the years and this batch at this stage isn't anywhere near that standard yet but Logan is young, Nielsen relatively unknown and Hendo a decent option if not spectacular. Lets see how these lot pan out next season or at least up to January before developing an ulcer with worry that they are all shite.

you wont be saying that come the end of the season when another clanger drops in.

Hindsight is always a wonderful thing.

I think a good reliable keeper is very important as others have said it affects defenders confidence and how they play eg. if the keeper is unreliable defenders will be more inclined to fall back and not hold the line further up the field, as well as going forward to support forward play.

A good goalkeeper is essential! not only does he save the shots, he lifts the confidence of the team when they see that he is reliable and will continue to keep them out, he orchestrates the defence so that they are organised and generally is a powerful presence that can intimidate teams.

I personally think we need to get rid of Henderson and Douglas and sign one more VERY good goalkeeper i.e. someone from the Premiership who isn't being played at a top club. I know that this goes against what I usually say, that being that big players wouldn't care for the club and would be clawing at money until they retired but in this instance, if we could get someone who still has a good few years left in him and can improve the team then I say go for it!

Walker was worth 10 - 15 points the last time we got promoted.

we should try and get walker back here he'd still do a good job and he wouldn't cost that much

Wasn't what i was geting at really, was just showing the importance of a good keeper.

But yeah wouldn't be a bad should, but i can't see us signing a new keeper.
