BartonFox Posted 31 July 2007 Posted 31 July 2007 Portsmouth rank alongside Charlton and Crystal Palace as an insignificant blot on the footballing landscape. How come this is our big preseason game One to massage MM's ego I guess
Blue Bob Posted 31 July 2007 Posted 31 July 2007 Maybe MM wants to rub it in that he has moved onto a club with more potential and a better stadium. Maybe there is one or two in the squad he wants to sign and thinks he can swing it with a view of our lovely stadium.
Ric Flair Posted 31 July 2007 Posted 31 July 2007 To be fair, big name friendlies are a load of old bollocks anyway. I've been to most of them over the years and the only one worth bothering with, dare I say it was under Pecker Taylor when we drew 3-3 with Fiorentina. The rest have been utter mince, bar a few fancy passes from Nalis against Barca.
BartonFox Posted 31 July 2007 Author Posted 31 July 2007 Pompey are a bigger club than Charlton and Palace.
Fez of Mahrez Posted 31 July 2007 Posted 31 July 2007 Friendlies are utter shite. The day you start reading too much into friendlies is the day you start looking like the long-lost third member of Chas n Dave - and I'm not ready for that yet.

Ozwin Posted 31 July 2007 Posted 31 July 2007 The rest have been utter mince, bar a few fancy passes from Nalis against Barca. Haha, that was an alright match. Ronaldinho's first game for them, he had many good things to say about us too. I remember n the first half the crowd booed him when he took corners down their end and by the end of the match he was getting cheered for doing tricks and things before he took them. Good times.

City Fan Posted 1 August 2007 Posted 1 August 2007 Didn't Sturridge score a hattrick? It was a great game.
THEBIGJOHNSTEADER; Posted 1 August 2007 Posted 1 August 2007 Didn't Sturridge score a hattrick? It was a great game. Yes, I always thought he was half decent. Of late people have been putting him in their worst LCFC XI. Madness
Fez of Mahrez Posted 1 August 2007 Posted 1 August 2007 Didn't Sturridge score a hattrick? It was a great game. He did, and Chiesa scored a hat-trick for them. They had Nuno Gomes up front too. Decent night's entertainment that, and some quality goals. Still meant the square root of ****all when the season started though, eh?

Agreed, all friendlies should be free admission IMO, a promo on behalf of the club to entice the undecided fan into perhaps buying a season ticket.

They have managed to sign some good players in recent times like Sol Campbell and David James and have spent silly money this pre-season and are expected to be challenging for a European place this time around. That must make them one of the better sides within England so it will be a real test for us. BTW I get your point about glamour. We are hardly entertaining Real Madrid or Milan but they are definitely one of the bigger sides in 2007/08.

ccb Posted 1 August 2007 Posted 1 August 2007 To be fair this time last year we had a friendly v FC Porto at home so other than a chance to sing songs about Milan this isn't the greatest pre-season day out for us either.
Geo V Posted 1 August 2007 Posted 1 August 2007 Being a good side does not make you a big club. Leeds are sh it but still a big club. Fair point but it depends how you equate that a club is "big". For years people go on about Newcastle and their passionate fans and conveyor belt of Geordie lads who have become top footballers but they haven't won anything in about 40 years despite trying their asses off. Leeds are in the third tier of our football along with Fo**st but some people still regard the latter bigger than us despite us winning trophies in the last ten years and them winning fudge all for about well over 20 years. Just like Bolton and Blackpool being the big clubs a century ago, times change. Portsmouth have the potential with there squad of players to do well and things like that new stadium will enhance public perception of them as a team. Lets not forget it wasn't that long ago that Chelsea were regarded as shite and now they seem to be set to be a top 3 side every year for at least the next decade and beyond.
Fez of Mahrez Posted 1 August 2007 Posted 1 August 2007 When people talk about us winning things recently though, it's still only the League Cup. We've never won the league, we've never won the FA Cup and we've never done anything in Europe. If I supported a team that had done any or indeed all of these and saw a Leicester fan trying to say that their club was bigger than mine, I'd laugh. Even during the supposed glory years under O'Neill the highest we finished was 8th. If you look at the sort of teams who are finishing there at the moment in what is a more competitive league these days, you wouldn't term them big clubs for doing it.

I think the main difference is that we've never really had a sustained period in the doldrums like most other clubs. I know the last three years have been shocking but remember, we're one of only 9 clubs to never have been relegated outside the top two divisions. Not necessarily saying that makes us a big club but it's got to count for something.
