Leicester 1 Portsmouth 3 - Post Match Reactions

Recommended Posts

Look, De Vries played really well today, and i'd like to think he's turned the corner, however he's not played like this in the previous friendlies has he. In fact the last time he played really well was agaist Spurs. Coincidence? Maybe so, but considering he was pretty shit for the rest of time, you do wonder.

You'd like to think he was fighting to be fit because of his love for the club and it's fans. Somehow the 8k a week says different.

Let's hope we see this performance level on a regular basis though, and i hope he does it, just don't go popping any champagne just yet.

From the pre-season games I've seen, Hinckley, Notts and today MDV has been one of the better more consistent performers.

I remember a few MK dons fans saying Allen is tactically inept. He doesn't have a clue where to play the players atm, Weso on the wing is just one example. Yes he's a good motivator and he pleases the fans with his messages and jokes, but does he really know about tactics and team selection?

I wouldnt put too much faith in kaebi after watching him in the asia cup online , though to be fare he didnt get long before being subbed . Just dont expect a world beater .

i was on the understanding he only played 45 mins for the whole tournament...

would much prefer him on the right wing instead of wesa who should be playiong in the middle...

hope he gets a run out on monday!

i think de vries did well at holding the ball up, could av done better with some of his shooting, chambers showed that he isn't a left back but well done to portsmouth they took there chances and leicester didn't but david james was on top form today

give the guy a break! one home friendly and already people are knocking him. we dont have a full squad so some will need to cover, i dont mind players being tried in differeing positions.. friendlies are hte place to do the trying too... i remember walshie being tried up front and that worked out very well... some will work and some wont. but still nothing wrong with trying just so long as he learns from the trying too...

I guess one thing we need to remember is that none of the teams we come up against will be as good as Portsmouth. I mean they got in the UEFA cup didnt they? We potentially could of got a better result out of it. But If some of these players can be seen as just good against Portsmouth, then I dont think we are doing that bad. Left back, centre back please MM

There was much good to take out of the performance. We played some proper football, created some excellent chances, indeed enough to have equalised and gone ahead at one time - but there were serious problems too.

Everyone will have seen in glorious technicolour why I think it is a form of stupidity to play non-specialists in an unfamiliar position.

Portsmouth scored goals and forever looked likely to score when they transferred theball to our left flank where Chambers almost constantly struggled to cope. The lad is demonstrably right footed, always looked awkward, and was rarely clever enough to blunt attacks nor accurate enough to launch them.

I've no idea why Mattock or Sheehan didn't play there but the decision quite possibly cost us the game.

People have mentioned the left flank and the right flank but there were major problems in the heart of our team. I've always been instinctively concerned about ageing fotoballers and today N'Gotty and Kishishev, both so impressive thus far, showed exactly why they've slipped out of the Premiership.

They were both off the pace, N'Gotty being woefully exposed at times by the clever runs of Nugent. What a class player he looks with such good people around him. Kishishev looked as vulnerable as N'Gotty and it was the midfielder when he went off that Clemence started to have some positive influence and City put together some sweet moves.

How Campbell missed both of his big chances I don't know. Five yards out, keeper to beat and he inexplicably taps it into his hands. The second occasion he only had to chip the keeper into an open goal but instead he tried a complex bending shot with the outside of his foot.

The good thing was he finally showed what a dangerous player he is in finding scoring positions, how swift he is to strike and how hard to mark.

Hume and Mark DeVries were excellent for much of the match and how tempting it would be to use Hume, DeVries and Campbell up front considering our lack of real wingers.

The goalkeeping problem remains. Henderson was okay but seemed his hesitancy might have cost us on a couple of occasions and I'm not sure he couldn't have done better with their third goal.

Ratings:

Henderson 6 (Hesitant at times).

Stearman 6.5 (Portsmouth made far less progress down his side than our left despite his being up against a difficult opponent. Perhaps a bit unlucky to be involved in losing the ball for their third).

N'Gotty 5 (His worst game to date. Often caught out through lack of pace).

McAuley 6 (Steady enough but Portsmouth asked him some difficult questions).

Chambers 5 (Kept trying but looked uncomfortably out of his element and his desperation to turn onto his right foot whenever he was in possession only emphasised his problems).

Wesolowski 7.25 (Came through a difficult challenge well. Always involved and always trying to do something useful. One cracking shot which was slightly deflected onto a post).

Clemence 6.5 (emeged from his shell when Kishishev went off and almost rallied us back into the match).

Kishishev 5 (Like N'Gotty probably his worst match for us to date. Involved but exposed for pace at times and erratic with his passing/dead ball kicks which are normally so reliable).

Mattock 4 (Only on for 20 minutes or so until he went off injured. Can't recall him doing anything of note in what I don't consider to be his natural position)

Hume 8 (Smashing goal - his 4th in the friendlies I believe - and desperately unlucky not to bag at least one more)

DeVries 7.5 (Direct assist and was a revelation. Showed there can be so many positive aspects to his game. He even seem ed to be jumping better and looked faster than I've ever seen him previously).

Subs:

Newton 6 (Classic professionals performance. Involved in some of our best moves, indeed was quite positive generally, but disappeared from the game for spells).

Campbell 6.5 (Worked so cleverly to win his chances then squandered them. So frustrating but far more promising than anything else I've yet seen from him).

Kisnorbo 5 (I noticed very little one way or the other)

Porter 5.5 (Apart from a careless throw in that Chambers didn't seem to want he retained possession well enough but had little chance to shine what with the endless stoppages and his lack of sufficient involvement. Needs a much freer role).

Hellings 5 (Not on long enough to have an impact).

Sappleton 5 (One crafty foul might have produced a goal but little else of note)

Rowe-Turner 5 (Did okay in the little time he had).

Martin Allen: -1 for again playing Chambers out of position. It really didn't work or even look like it might work. I was tempted not to penalise the defeat but there'll be reward for beating a lower level team so -0.5 for losing to Portsmouth, especially as we might well have secured at least a draw had we not unbalanced the side. (Total +15 overall).

When i watched him he was subbed after about 25 minutes for being missing i presume when they scored there first . Hopefully a different proposition on the wing rather than a right back!!! :dunno:

Didn't want to be influenced by reading the threads first so i aplogise in advance if im epeating whats been said(I will read after!!!)

Fisrtly the atmosphee was half decent considering the reletively small attendance.

Pompey helpd the cause with the drum and John the bell man!!!

Looking through Pompey teamsheet doesn't excite you as they aint got that many BIG names but they seem a okay side.

We really messed up defensively inall 3 pompey goals. The defense were nowhere, and if that was a competitive game i'd be reallyworried.

Thought MdV had a preety impressive game. His touch was good and the pass for Humes' goal was pin point.

One VERY sad and disappointing thing were some'fans' in K Block (who normaly would be in L1),who started chanting'Your not fit to wear the shirt' and 'Get him off' after MdV messed up a couple of passes.

IMHO i think MdV may have been our best player.

Really don't understand these people, must be just the hormones or the acne which causes them to shout shite!!

Thought no one shone and no one was really crap, but a few didn't look too comfortable.

The boy Sappleton is a BIG boy.

DJ looked nippy when he came on.

Clemence had a couple of nice touches, nothing amazing.

Definetly not sure about the Defense-no one looked good...may have been me!

But its only a friendly and i hope most of the players were just using it to get fit and saving themselves in case of injuries

No i was sat in the kop, and found it amusing whenever someone messed up! I am in L1 for first time next year, but if its going to be like that, I may well move to the kop or even N block.....

As long as you are not in the last few back rows,L1 is okay.

If you are in the last few back rows...MOVE!!!!! :|

Chambers showed such promise and experience at right-back, and I thought he was excellent in a couple of the earlier friendlies. I cannot understand why he is consistently pushed to left back when his replacement in the right back slot, Stearman, has never looked anything above average. A naturally right footed full back is being forced out to the left, and the opostition will gleefully take advantage of this. We have both Sheehan and Mattock that can play at left back, and I can't see why Levi has been unfairly (in my opinion) booted out of the squad.

Playing people out of position when we have good cover makes no sense to me, and it will cost us points if Allen continues to do it.

Hume and Clemence were quality today though :worship:

So was De Vries, he held the ball up well, fed it wide and made some cracking through balls.

Man of the match for me.

I disagree with point 2 my learned friend. I think this is a worrying sign of Maybury-itis and we will be moaning about it all season.

I won't, it's my New Season's Resolution.

What's your New Season's Resolution?

1. It was a friendly

2. It was about getting players match fit not playing them in their best positions

3. It was a friendly

Surely we should be fielding a squad looking close to what our first XI will be next season. They've had weeks to get fooking match fit, so surely this was about playing them in their best positions and building confidence as a team. If people are shunted around the field all the time it does no one any good and eradicates the point of having a friendly at this point in the season all together.

Try not to stare at Holly's tits too much.

Good resolution

I'm reckoning you break that by 12:30 next Saturday...which will beat me as I expect to be moaning about something tomorrow morning - but now I am going to retire.
