Ric Flair Posted 13 September 2007 Posted 13 September 2007 I tell you what, Gary Megson's transfer record whilst at West Brom was impressive. He had money to spend in patches, but he rarely wasted it, which I suppose is evident considering the 2 promotions. But looking at some of the deals he made are very shrewd. Perhaps Mandaric won't need to intefere with Megson? Some signings of note are: Neil Clement £100,000 - An absolute bargain considering the role he played for Megson Russell Hoult £450,000 - Proved to be a bargain at that price, over 200 games for West Brom. Darren Moore £750,000 - A defensive rock for plenty of teams who got promotion out of this division. Lee Hughes - Selling him for £5 million to Cov was genuis. Buying him back for £2.5 million a while later was debatable but he helped them get promotion twice. Jason Koumas £2 million - Quality player, enough said Thomas Gaardsoe Free - An astute signing who's still there Rob Hulse £750,000 - Bit of a bargain considering the goals he's scored at West Brom and since there. Made a hefty profit on him when Leeds bought him. Geoff Horsfield £1 million - Did very well there, when they sold him, they also made a profit. Thomasz Kuszczak Free - Just the £3 million profit there then. Jonathan Greening £1.25 million - For that money he's been a solid signing for West Brom since Megson's departure. Zoltan Gera £1.5 million - Good player, could have been sold on for a lot more than that should they have wanted to. Robert Earnshaw £3 million - Prolific at Championship level, under-rated at Premiership level. Cost a lot more since he's left there. Kevin Campbell Free - Served them well Paul Robinson £250,000 - An absolute steal at that price, just like the £100,000 for Clement years before. Inamoto £200,000 - Money wise, bargain. Not sure why it didn't work out, Megson had left long before Inamoto eventually went. I'm sure there are the odd mistake he's made in the market, what manager doesn't. Selling Gabbidon to Cardiff when he was a youngster for £175,000 probably wasn't his cleverest move. But given the bargains he picked up in Clement, Robinson, Gaardsoe and Moore. I think he can be slightly excused. I'm starting to perk up a bit.

Ric Flair Posted 13 September 2007 Author Posted 13 September 2007 Yes but thats the whole picture is it.Lets have a sneaky peak at his Forest record. As I said, I have highlighted the transfers of note. On the whole scale of things, his transfer record at West Brom was very good. He even made a profit on Scott Dobie, that's genius. He just bought him whilst he was at Forest to undo that feat.
Ozwin Posted 13 September 2007 Posted 13 September 2007 Sig needs changing. And yeah, some good signings there. I'm still not going to be convinced until we win 5 in a row and sit top of the table with +10 Goal difference.

Isn't this the man who was responsible for Grant "Onmehead" Holt as well.
Ric Flair Posted 13 September 2007 Author Posted 13 September 2007 His record at Forest isn't as impressive but i'll go through it anyway. Fez of Mahrez Posted 13 September 2007 Posted 13 September 2007 His transfer record at Forest wasn't dreadful - he got rid of a lot of deadwood. His record at WBA was extremely good. Pretty pointless discussion anyway seeing as we will be signing 14 Eastern European right-backs that Mandaric has seen some videos of.

Ric Flair Posted 13 September 2007 Author Posted 13 September 2007 Correct, he also sold Marlon King. Isn't this the man who was responsible for Grant "Onmehead" Holt as well. Selling King was fairly nonsensical, but given what he'd done at Forest, you can hardly blame him. I know he went on loan first and it was evident that King was having a blinder at Watford, but a) They may have already agreed to sell him when the transfer window opened and b) even if they didn't, perhaps King wouldn't have wanted to go back to Forest anyway.
Ric Flair Posted 13 September 2007 Author Posted 13 September 2007 So, presumably, you believe we are in for another massive player-go-round. Not necessarily, he hasn't the reputation for a massive turnover of transfers every season. The above transfers are over a substained period of time. Some of the players he signed have been regarded as the best players in this division at some point. Koumas, Earnshaw, Clement, Moore, Hoult, Robinson. Plus a fair few others. But ignore that if you want, let's not let anything positive get in the way of a good moan.

With the money he had there, or lack of it, and the cr*p that was already installed he really didn't do that badly...

I like Koumas and Earnshaw as much as anyone. It's the unimaginative hoofball and preoccupation with defence that gets me. But some won't mind that anyway so don't worry on my part.
Manwell Pablo Posted 13 September 2007 Posted 13 September 2007 With the money he had there, or lack of it, and the cr*p that was already installed he really didn't do that badly... haha Clingan as well forgot about him, which is understandable really. Also Tyson, over priced, always injured, over rated.
lookwhaticando Posted 13 September 2007 Posted 13 September 2007 The downside to that being the fact that he can't bring any players in until January (aside from Loans which he doesn't seem to have used much).
The People's Hero Posted 13 September 2007 Posted 13 September 2007 His transfer record at Forest wasn't dreadful - he got rid of a lot of deadwood. His record at WBA was extremely good.Pretty pointless discussion anyway seeing as we will be signing 14 Eastern European right-backs that Mandaric has seen some videos of. I've been saying for ages we're lacking in Eastern European players, especially right backs!
FilboFox Posted 13 September 2007 Posted 13 September 2007 The downside to that being the fact that he can't bring any players in until January (aside from Loans which he doesn't seem to have used much). Thats good news for me... I have never really liked loans that much as they come in, fill a position, get acquainted with the team, form a bond with them which starts to make the team better with spirit and then bugger back off to their original teams leaving the previous team needing to fill the position and with a sense of having lost someone which then starts them playing badly again... Might be exaggerating a bit but you catch my drift...
Ric Flair Posted 13 September 2007 Author Posted 13 September 2007 haha Clingan as well forgot about him, which is understandable really. Also Tyson, over priced, always injured, over rated. I thought Clingan was highly rated there?

But some won't mind that anyway so don't worry on my part. That worries me as well, but i'm willing to wait and see what happens. Other than Kaebi, Ferreira and Hume, there doesn't appear to be many players with natural flair in our squad anyway.
Dames Posted 13 September 2007 Posted 13 September 2007 His record is actually quite impressive. If he pulls a few of those off here he probably wouldnt be so bad after all.
Finnegan Posted 13 September 2007 Posted 13 September 2007 Selectively reading this thread, I deduce we're going to sign Earnshaw and Koumas. May the good times roll.
Manwell Pablo Posted 13 September 2007 Posted 13 September 2007 I thought Clingan was highly rated there? Yes the Physios think he's a lovely chap.
The People's Hero Posted 13 September 2007 Posted 13 September 2007 Pah, I tire of working for 'the man'. Who'd care to branch out with me on a venture of investment and woe, of excitement and bitter disappointment, of whats, ifs, buts and maybes? Who's in? Losers.
Finnegan Posted 13 September 2007 Posted 13 September 2007 Yes the Physios think he's a lovely chap. As does his nan.
Daggers Posted 13 September 2007 Posted 13 September 2007 I like Koumas and Earnshaw as much as anyone. Not a hope - no one likes them more than Finners.
Ric Flair Posted 13 September 2007 Author Posted 13 September 2007 Yes the Physios think he's a lovely chap. Aaaah didn't realise he was injured. There was a time when he was being talked about as a hot prospect, didn't he get called up to the Irish National Squad?
