Megson's Transfer Record

Aaaah didn't realise he was injured. There was a time when he was being talked about as a hot prospect, didn't he get called up to the Irish National Squad?

YES! I think he played last Satdee and maybe even last night!

He's not injured anymore I think he's recovered, but he did break his ankle last season.

I tell you what, Gary Megson's transfer record whilst at West Brom was impressive. He had money to spend in patches, but he rarely wasted it, which I suppose is evident considering the 2 promotions. But looking at some of the deals he made are very shrewd.

Perhaps Mandaric won't need to intefere with Megson?

Some signings of note are:

Neil Clement £100,000 - An absolute bargain considering the role he played for Megson

Russell Hoult £450,000 - Proved to be a bargain at that price, over 200 games for West Brom.

Darren Moore £750,000 - A defensive rock for plenty of teams who got promotion out of this division.

Lee Hughes - Selling him for £5 million to Cov was genuis. Buying him back for £2.5 million a while later was debatable but he helped them get promotion twice.

Jason Koumas £2 million - Quality player, enough said

Thomas Gaardsoe Free - An astute signing who's still there

Rob Hulse £750,000 - Bit of a bargain considering the goals he's scored at West Brom and since there. Made a hefty profit on him when Leeds bought him.

Geoff Horsfield £1 million - Did very well there, when they sold him, they also made a profit.

Thomasz Kuszczak Free - Just the £3 million profit there then.

Jonathan Greening £1.25 million - For that money he's been a solid signing for West Brom since Megson's departure.

Zoltan Gera £1.5 million - Good player, could have been sold on for a lot more than that should they have wanted to.

Robert Earnshaw £3 million - Prolific at Championship level, under-rated at Premiership level. Cost a lot more since he's left there.

Kevin Campbell Free - Served them well

Paul Robinson £250,000 - An absolute steal at that price, just like the £100,000 for Clement years before.

Inamoto £200,000 - Money wise, bargain. Not sure why it didn't work out, Megson had left long before Inamoto eventually went.

I'm sure there are the odd mistake he's made in the market, what manager doesn't. Selling Gabbidon to Cardiff when he was a youngster for £175,000 probably wasn't his cleverest move. But given the bargains he picked up in Clement, Robinson, Gaardsoe and Moore. I think he can be slightly excused.

I'm starting to perk up a bit.

Good post although we may not get the chance to see him bringing in any players lol

Anyway, any manager who has had the mighty Benji in his squad like he did in 2001 must be good , especially as he miraculously managed to help Andy Johnson, his midfield maestro score, yes thats score, 3 goals.

I think this was in the days before Andy Johnson was a cripple, consigned to a wheelchair, playing for Leicester only with

a) Special dispensation from Gods

b) Painkilling drugs

c) Steve Agnew's legs.

AJ is a special kind of case. To see him running around the pitch when his mate Geoff Horsfield arrived reminded me of when my nephew was 5 and trying to show off with excitement at his Nativity play, trying to impress little Gemma.

Even The Benjster scored for him. Im sure I heard that the Benjster is at his 16th club. He is a modern day Stevie Claridge and if he gets to play as long as Sooper Steve he may well have notched up his half century.

I'd be a tad perkier if

a) I had any faith that Milan would stump up that level of cash and

b) I thought Megson would find players like that again.

The second is debatable - I think the first is unquestionably out.

I think you're all missing something out.

He signed Lee Marshall for almost a million, representing a profit on Taylor's outlay on him.

Selectively reading this thread, I deduce we're going to sign Earnshaw and Koumas. May the good times roll.

It's the leek shaped glasses. ;)

What does his transfer record matter...doesn't MM call all the shots on what "quality" to bring in  ??? Hope Meg's has taken that into account before he signed on the dotted line...

To be fair he did make some quaity signings, but that was then...The thing is what will he make of the squad here?

Who will he play? Who will he sell?

I just hope this doesnt derail us tho... but saying that i think we are all ready right of track...

Certainly an impressive record at WBA.

More to the point is not who he will sign for us but who will he dispose of ?

Can he get any money for any of them ?

Then maybe he will (with MM permission!) start to build a decent squad of players.

I have got a feeling that january will be busy for us, he wont like the look of everyone obviously so he will want to change a few things...

We have got to settle now after all of this....!! start pushing up the table...

MM should be the manager and just hire top quality coaches who pick the line up :D

Would save him a lot in compensation :yesyes:

Thomas Gaardsoe was quality but he had to retire through injury
