Blue Bob Posted 14 November 2007 Posted 14 November 2007 The Mercury are doing Milan a favour by letting everyone know we have a keeper available when the transfer window opens. Free advertising - dont knock it. Hopefully they will run a series of these for the next few weeks advertising Maybury, Cort, Hellings, Hammond and many more of the muppets we have on our books.
Thracian Posted 14 November 2007 Posted 14 November 2007 You've missed my point spectacularly. All I'm saying is that it's harsh to moan at them when they've said nothing publicly. If they were happy in private at playing for the reserves then that would be far, far worse. It's good that they're not happy about it and it's good that they haven't got whinging to the press. Can't see it's that relevent but still. I thought I did read something in the Iranian press about him not getting in the team (might be mistaken though) and any comment here would have to come from his interpreter who has mentioned Kaebi's unhappiness at not being given a chance by Megson. That would have meant not being given a chance in the first team because Megson watched him twice to my knowledge in the reserves. Unfortunately for Kaebi he didn't do very well which was hardly Megson's fault.
Thracian Posted 14 November 2007 Posted 14 November 2007 Kaebi is picked regularly AT LEFT BACK. And before that he was picked regularly at right-back. That's two positions he's been given ample chance to show his international class. Now I imagine they'll look at him further forward but who do you suggest moves over for him? Would you want to move aside if you were Odhiambo and had just scored two goals? Or Chambers who had just made two goals? Why don't you campaign for them? Kaebi will doubtless get more chances in one position or another but it's down to him to be ready to take them - and not just once, consistently. The lads I've mentioned have done it much more than once.

I doubt that perspective buyers read the Leicester Mercury
Fez of Mahrez Posted 14 November 2007 Posted 14 November 2007 I can't be arsed. We will clearly never agree on it.
martyn Posted 14 November 2007 Posted 14 November 2007 Well personally I'd be 'campaigning' for Kaebi as right wingback as I cannot see for the life of me how he could be any worse than liability Stearman (who i forget would be an absolute cultured maestro at centre back no?). I'm inclined to think he can improve to a level where he will reach our first team but after a period of settling in (see Pires, Henry, Hleb as Arsenal examples).....whether the same can be said of Southend goal machine Odhiambo is up for debate. There is no smoke without fire in football and a player who has been given plaudits in magazines and attracted premiership interest is not someone who deserves to be written off and whether you like it or not, there appears to be inherent bias within your match ratings.

Can't honestly see us playing wing-backs anyway judging by the sort of football it's produced. As for the plaudits in magazines I've read similar on the OS so I'm not the least bit impressed. If you think I'm biased there's little I can say although no-one has yet explained to me why I should want to be biased against someone who really was good enough to be in our team? To me James Chambers is our best right back. If you think Kaebi is better that's an opinion. If you think my opposing view is down to bias you're entirely wrong and it's a nebulous argument anyway. If doesn't present any facts to strengthen your case whatsoever. I have watched this guy all season. Virtually every game he's played. No way would I pick him at right wing-back ahead of Chambers and Stearman. Why change defenders with a one-per-game goals against record for a defender from a team whose defence has been solid as a plywood skyscraper? I know, don't tell me. None of that was his fault.
Manwell Pablo Posted 14 November 2007 Posted 14 November 2007 Can't see it's that relevent but still. martyn Posted 14 November 2007 Posted 14 November 2007 A defence conceding 1 goal per game is in no way related to Stearmans performances. Luckily for him, the amount of times he lets his marker whip in a free cross is a moot point considering he has 3 towering centre halves to bail him out. I actually agree with you a lot of the time Thracian, but the 1 thing that always rouses my interest are completely spurious statistics like this It's similar to the time when Sheehan apparently deserved a place in the side because he was in the side for a wholly unconvincing 2-0 victory over a dreadful Sheffield Wednesday. And yes I agree about Chambers, he should be playing RWB or RB as it stands.

And yes I agree about Chambers, he should be playing RWB or RB as it stands. We conceded roughly one a game when we played 4-4-2. Forty-nine in 46 matches last season for instance. I've no real idea what 3-5-2 has really done for us really except further reduce our already limited attacking options. I've not defended Stearman much. I've had reservations about him since he came into the team three seasons back. I'd like him developed as a centre-half. But the stats suggest he's still a better player than people make out. To me the shame is that he's not developed. Not become more accomplished. Sheffield were indeed unconvincing in the game you mentioned but City still had to beat them. Sheehan played a decent part in what was a perfectly competent and reasonably attractive City display and didn't deserve to be dropped afterwards. Funnily enough that was the last time we beat Sheffield Wednesday until he returned to the side two years later. Having said that and in retrospect I don't know that Sheehan's exile did him any harm. Since then his heading has improved, his covering has improved, his free-kicks have become more deadly and, overall he seems to have developed his strengths and at least improved most of his weaknesses. The real turning point was his decision not to go out on loan. It was as if he knew he had one last chance and just matured in time to take it. He's not the finished article either. He'll have to keeping work hard to combat those weaknesses. But the difference between Sheehan and Stearman is that Sheehan's strengths have become an important part of City's armoury while Stearman's attacking flair seems to have diminished. All first team players are likely to be fairly good by definition. What each one needs is something special to justify his place. Fulop has his height and his handling, Chambers his speed, N'Gotty his reading of the game, Kisnorbo his determination and bravery, Sheehan his magical left foot and accurate free kicks etc.... Just now it's hard to see what Stearman has that lifts him above anyone else. He had something when I saw him as a centre-back though whether that would apply at first team level I don't know. But as a right back he seems to be going backwards and I don't mean he sometimes gets skinned either. I mean his passing and the number of times he manages to get forwards. The latter is partly because we're so lacking down the right, more particularly when we lose our first choice midfield, but that's not really an excuse for so many lax passes. Centre-back and/or emergency right back is the way I see Stearman's future.
Thracian Posted 14 November 2007 Posted 14 November 2007 That wasn't him moaning, that was the Iranian press moaning. I hadn't imagined it then. I don't know if they spoke to anyone in the Kaebi camp - as I say, it matters not. He has been unhappy as I say but really his football is down to him. He's getting the games.

Raj Posted 14 November 2007 Posted 14 November 2007 Oh my God Jimmy! What are we going to do without you! PLease take a few of the other so called 'Professional footballers' with you!
Thracian Posted 14 November 2007 Posted 14 November 2007 I'll pack his bags for him I won't - he might as well do something while he's here.
dandannieldanok Posted 14 November 2007 Posted 14 November 2007 I still cannot manage to get my head around the sheer amount of crap players Martin Allen brought in
Mort Posted 14 November 2007 Posted 14 November 2007 I still cannot manage to get my head around the sheer amount of crap players Martin Allen brought in Didnt you get the memo? All the cack players were brought to the club by Milan while all the half way usful ones were the result of Allen's incisive footballing brain...
