stevie909 Posted 25 November 2007 Posted 25 November 2007 Barber's commentary has got to stop. I basically heard nothing of the bristol game yesterday, when people told me of some of the highlights, i literally had no idea! when walshy is there to keep him on track he is ok, but other than that... ughh And what is with turning the crowd noise off? started with the fireworks at colchester (fairplay), now it just completely takes away the atmosphere.
The Stig Posted 25 November 2007 Posted 25 November 2007 There are worse commentaotrs than Barber. There are also better, but yes a change would be nice.
Phlashman Posted 25 November 2007 Posted 25 November 2007 I hate it when he just goes of onto something completely random for 5 minutes or more and then comes back to the match saying something like "don't worry you're not missing much"... just shut up and discribe whats going on and I'll judge if it's a boring match.
Micky Ruddle Posted 25 November 2007 Posted 25 November 2007 Thats what it was. I thought Ashton Gate was quiet. No-oone, Leicester or Bristol fans were singing
stevie909 Posted 25 November 2007 Author Posted 25 November 2007 Yeh but when somebody scores you can just hear barber screaming over... well silence. sounds pretty stupid
Milky Posted 25 November 2007 Posted 25 November 2007 My family were disgusted with it yesterday. He hardly talked about what was happening on the pitch, it was more like lame chat with Barber and Guppy.
Mark Posted 25 November 2007 Posted 25 November 2007 Just look at how many co commentators he has got through this season, one match is clearly enough for most of them
Koke Posted 25 November 2007 Posted 25 November 2007 Talking abou co-commentators.. Where was Walsh yesterday anyway? And why was Guppy the co-commentator
lcfc_jme Posted 25 November 2007 Posted 25 November 2007 Talking abou co-commentators.. Where was Walsh yesterday anyway? And why was Guppy the co-commentator It's my understanding that Walsh is his co-commentator for all City home games this season and so he should be on tomorrow if you're not going to the game.
Thracian Posted 25 November 2007 Posted 25 November 2007 My family were disgusted with it yesterday. He hardly talked about what was happening on the pitch, it was more like lame chat with Barber and Guppy. You've touched on a key point - he really doesn't take a blind man to the game. Some players, like Mattock, Clemence and Wesolowski for instance hardly got a mention at all in his commentary yet, when I read the fans player ratings, all were considered to have done pretty well, particularly Weso. So what were they doing? Barber simply failed to tell. He didn't and doesn't really analyse the game in any way. Instead he so easily gets into some inconsequential ramble that has very little to do with what's going on. At times there's an injury which would provide the perfect opportunity to let Guppy or whoever explain the story so far but he doesn't really do that. I never know how the team is playing, which individuals are doing well and why, where the ball in on the pitch and it's as if he's so afraid to give those details that he'd rather involve himself in those inconsequential asides. It's not as if he's inexperienced or new to the Leicester City scene and perhaps unfamiliar with who's who. Some people convey the pictures and also the atmosphere of a game but with Barber there'll be a period of silence or aside talk and all of a sudden someone will be clipping in the final pass for a goal and you'll wonder where the hell that came from. What really gets me is that nothing changes. You'd think he'd assess what he does, listen to the criticism he must surely get and make adjustments. I don't pretend the job is easy nor expect that he won't make mistakes. But I want to be given a picture in words. Instead it's not even colourful impressionism. There's no joy, no emotion, no apparent expertise, no analysis, no great flow of information...it's always flat. Even when we win.
lcfc_jme Posted 25 November 2007 Posted 25 November 2007 As an aside, Barber is a Derby fan, so anybody expecting him to be full of passion and general happiness when watching us is going to be continually disappointed and let down.
lookwhaticando Posted 26 November 2007 Posted 26 November 2007 As an aside, Barber is a Derby fan, so anybody expecting him to be full of passion and general happiness when watching us is going to be continually disappointed and let down. As I said elsewhere recently, I'm well up for it. My price is low... and I'm to be paid in pints (before the game).

Couldnt agree more...i thought it was just me, his commentating winds me up, one minute on sat we had a free kick, then he went off track and the next i knew they had a free kick!! I too dont even think i heard Clemmences name mentioned in the second half at all, and as for the goals, the first one i wasnt even sure we had scored due to the lack of emotion in Barbers voice!! Bring back Nev Foulger!!
hairy Posted 26 November 2007 Posted 26 November 2007 It does seem to be getting worse. I listen all the way through and had little idea who was in possession at any given time. Drowning out the crowd noise is poor. I usually listen harder when I hear a cheer as it usually means one of the teams is attacking. If you want me to pass on your messages of love / hate tonight I will do as his commentry position is just next to my seat. Is Walsh contracted for all the home matches, Rowlett was with him earlier in the season?
Durnerz Posted 26 November 2007 Posted 26 November 2007 I still can't believe hes in a job. If I were as shit at my job as he is at his then I would have been sacked a LONG time ago! Luckily I had the luxury of being in Bristol for the match and not listening to this arsehole's rhythmic farting on the airwaves. The mans like an old woman there for a natter with tea and biscuits along with a chosen victim beside him, the sooner he is ousted and we get a proper commentator in, the better! Maybe Milan should take over RL and work his magic.

There's no joy, no emotion, no apparent expertise, no analysis, no great flow of information...it's always flat. Even when we win. Thats all true, spot on. Fryatts goal was the prime example, "Matt Fryatt, Onside, scores the winning goal" That was it. You get more info about the style of the goal from SSN But thats not it either. He knows nothing, about players, about refs, about teams, nothing. When it came through that Man City had scored against Reading he credited it to Aston Villas Stiliyan Petrov instead of Martin Petrov this isn't a one off it's a weekly occurance. No ones perfect I know (apart from Jeff) I get my names mixed up every now and again, but I wouldn't make the mistakes he makes week in week out, and I'm not a BBC commentator! He isn't fit to do his job. The Higlight of Saturdays commentry was Steve Guppys little story about Bristol Citys GK Adriano Basso.
izzetafox? Posted 26 November 2007 Posted 26 November 2007 Bring Back Nev!!!! Maybe we should start a petition!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Raj Posted 26 November 2007 Posted 26 November 2007 Maybe we should start a petition!!!!!!!!!!!!! And while we are at it,we could do one to swap the Kop with The Family Stand! I am going to go for his job. Go For it Fezzler!!!!
Manwell Pablo Posted 26 November 2007 Posted 26 November 2007 I am going to go for his job. I back you. Your perfect. And you've got a face for radio. <sniggers>
Wycombe Fox Posted 26 November 2007 Posted 26 November 2007 The Higlight of Saturdays commentry was Steve Guppys little story about Bristol Citys GK Adriano Basso. Guppy was getting his words all of a muddle too! Aminated instead of animated and his best effort for Wesolowski was Waleski!!
Milky Posted 26 November 2007 Posted 26 November 2007 According to the Virgin media commentator, we've got a player called Steadman, and the Bristol City manager is called Graham.
