Norris and Plymouth in battle of wills

A BATTLE of wills has broken out at Plymouth Argyle with Ipswich Town and Leicester City watching closely.

Pilgrims boss Paul Sturrock is confident David Norris will be lining up for Plymouth against Ipswich on Tuesday and he will still be at Home Park next Friday after the transfer window closes.

But, the pair appear to be at loggerheads as Norris has made it very clear he wants to leave and even after his transfer request handed in last Friday was rejected, he remains an unhappy player.

Norris was named in the Argyle squad that travel to Portsmouth for their FA Cup tie at Fratton Park and Sturrock is confident his star player will continue to play a part in their Championship promotion push this season.

Sturrock said: “If Norris fails to take part it will be a clear indication that the situation could be untenable for Plymouth.

"I am as happy for him to play as I was last Saturday. I know he has high standards and he always maintains them," Sturrock said.

"He is a professional man. He is paid by Plymouth Argyle. I know 'Chuck' and I don't expect him to be any different, and I know he won't be.''

Norris did not train on Monday and Tuesday and only trained on Thursday after being promised a meeting with board members.

A source in Plymouth said last night: “David wants to leave. He has made it crystal clear that he wants to go and has been left unhappy by the lack of communication with Plymouth who made him promises they have not kept.

“This is a key time for him. He is 27 next month and knows he has an opportunity to set up his family for life.”

The Peterborough-born player wants to be as close as he can be to his Cambridgeshire-based family and both Ipswich Town and Leicester City would suit him.

The Plymouth source added: “Ipswich would be a very credible choice. They are a premier League club in waiting with fantastic facilities and would be able to offer David the right sort of deal with ambitions to match his.”

Although the Foxes have not yet tabled an offer for Norris their manager Ian Holloway is keeping a close interest in the situation and has made it clear through his friends in the media he would try to sign him if possible.

is he reeeeeeally worth 2 million? fook me that's a lot of money in this league.

If ollie wants him, dont worry about the price tag.

Let ollie build his team his way. Too many fans worry about transfer fees.

If ollies unsucsesful, then have your says. If he gets us in the Prem or heading in the right direction you will have worried needlessly.

ahh a breath of fresh air having a newbie talk some sense, tbh if milan wants to spend it then i couldnt give a flying donkey, i say give hammond a 2m wage ris....................................maybe not! ;) ive said it before though ollie has his targets and how much the fans want a player doesnt really matter ollie chooses the players for a reason whether it be he sees potential, he needs back up players, he thinks they will fit in or if he wants to replace our shite!

True, but if the board didn't back the manager they would have got stick. They are in a no win situation.

My main worry is where the money is coming from, is it Milans personal money... or is he financing loans against the clubs assets?

Sounds like he just set up Plymouths goal in the 5th min against Pompey! If he has a great game today his price will probably go up!!! :(:(

Yeah probably did, but if you watched MOTD last night he gave pompey ther 2nd one, still dont think hes worth 2 mill.

A very sensible argument indeed, unfortunately there are so many wanna-be-manager supporters there will always be the same concerns.

We have no money, someone please finance us. We have finance, don't spend it on X.

My only concern is like Babylon with the source of the money, Ollie knows Norris, will know what he has to offer and his maximum value in todays market, stop worrying and sit there, hopeful he fails so you can berate him and say I told you so.

I'm actually quite excited about the prospect of him being here.

Norris dropped for Ipswich game...

BREAKING NEWS: NORRIS WILL NOT PLAY AGAINST IPSWICH

8 readers have commented on this story. Click here to read their views.

MIDFIELDER David Norris has not been included in Plymouth Argyle's squad for their away game against Ipswich Town in the Championship tomorrow.

Manager Paul Sturrock has taken the decision, in consultation with Norris, following the almost constant speculation linking the 26-year-old with the Suffolk club this month.

Ipswich have made two offers for Norris, with the latest one being for £1.75 million. Town manager Jim Magilton has consistently made it clear that Norris is his number one target for the January transfer window.

Sturrock said: "After discussions with the player, we have both come to the opinion that this would be the wrong game for Chuck to play in."

The Pilrgims' boss insisted, however, that Norris would not be sold before the transfer window shuts at midnight on Thursday.

Vital Ipswich can reveal that Ipswich Town

are on the verge of signing long-term target, and Plymouth midfilder David Norris! Hallelujah!

Norris was left out of last night's 0-0 draw against Plymouth due to 'conditions not being right' according to Paul Sturrock, the Argyle boss. Sturrock later conceded that he can't predict where Norris would end up.

Town told to meet "Plymouth price" for Norris

Last Updated: Wed, 30 Jan 2008 11:36

ipswich-town

Paul Sturrock has admitted that midfielder David Norris could still leave the club if Argyle receives a "Plymouth price" from Ipswich.

Norris has been linked with a move to Town throughout January, but Pilgrims boss Sturrock has been reluctant to let him go as he feels the player has a future in his side.

However after being left out of the team that played Ipswich in Tuesday night's goalless draw, Sturrock admitted Norris could leave if the right offer is received.

He said: "David Norris is the heart of the team and he has been, I believe, since he came to the football club as a young, raw laddie.

"He has blossomed tremendously, and when he plays and shows that urgency and that drive it seems to rub off on others. He was well missed.

The only way he will leave us is for a Plymouth price, and that's huge. At the end of the day, I haven't got a crystal ball and I can't foresee the fortune.

"All I will say is that we have got two days left and it will have to be a Plymouth price."

Argyle are understood to be targeting £2million, which is a fee that Ipswich's third bid was reportedly close to meeting and they would surely be willing to pay this to clinch their long term target.

This could well mean Norris has made his final appearance for Argyle and will finally make his move to Portman Road before Thursday's deadline.

Norris Deal Today?

Wednesday 30 Jan 2008 13:43:35 by Phil

The deal to bring David Norris to Portman Road from Plymouth could be completed today, according to sources in the South-West. The 26-year-old's switch from Argyle to Town has been the longest running saga of the transfer window with the Blues making three offers for the midfielder.

Town are believed to be paying £2.25 million for the former Boston and Bolton man with the Trotters receiving 50% of the fee.

According to this guy on 606 a bid of £3 Million as been accepted by an unknown club.

I believe that bid to be far too much for Norris, you can get a number of better midfielders for that.

He will end up going to Ipswich, no doubt about it. Considering the money already spent in this window, I don't think we can be too annoyed about losing out on a decent Championship player for £2.25million. Especially considering Plymouth will have been desperate not to sell to us.

I just hope we have another player lined up instead because we could do with some more cover on the wings. I think Holloway realises this considering he played Hume there on Monday night.
