Collymore Posted 2 January 2008 Posted 2 January 2008 I've said it for years, Barber is the most annoying, inept and unprofessional commentator you could possibly wish for. I always usually listen to the oppositions commentary (where there are also some bad examples about) but I've never come across someone so shockingly bad as Barber. The amount of facts he gets wrong is frightening. If Barber was in my family and I cared about him I would honestly suggest a CAT scan. A commentator is so important, I know Alan Green isn't everyone's favourite, but I really get a good mental image of what's happening. I'll watch the highlights later on on TV and it will feel like I've already seen it. With Barber there have been times where he's described a goal so wrong you wonder after if he'd actually been at the game. Yesterday Howard has a chance late on and Barber said "well he should have scored there was no one with in yards of him" Piper then said "I think the defender was putting him off Jon" Barber replies "It should be a corner the defender was all over him and I think the defender had the last touch" In my mind Barber had painted to pictures within seconds 1. Howard in acres having a mare. 2. Howard wrestling with a defender and the defender coming off better. The actual outcome was Howard had headed it out for a goal kick. I would just like to see someone that took pride in their job and got their facts right. I'm not saying that everyone's perfect and Barber should never be allowed to make a mistake but it's getting to the point where nearly every sentence he's getting it wrong.

Green's problem is that he's way too opinionated, which means he's not really suited for national radio, as most of the audience won't share his pro-Liverpool bias. However, Barber is the exact opposite. Never once will you hear him say any individual player is having a bad game. In fact he seems terrified of saying anything to which anyone at the club, be they owner, manager or player, might take the slightest offence. But he's on the payroll of the BBC (and therefore the public), not Leicester City FC!
Fez of Mahrez Posted 2 January 2008 Posted 2 January 2008 Thing is, if you told the truth at the moment you'd never get very far in interviews with club staff. He is still incredibly bad though. Painful to listen to. Thankfully I have been to so many games this year I've only had to listen to him once. I feel sorry for people who sit through it week in week out. He doesn't describe the game at all. You might as well watch the game on Teletext.

I agree about Green being opinionated, but because I have no opioion on any of the teams in the premiership it doesn't bother me. As for Barber, he's doing a good job of pissing off the listeners, It's a werid one local football commentary. It's not like a breakfast show in the morning where if a listener doesn't like the DJ he can simply change station and then the bosses use these statistics to sack people. We're forced to either listen to the oppositions commentary (which i'm not sure officially is an option unless you live with in their local radio coverage area) or go to the games! Barber's like a cup of tea at the game, you don't want to pay over £1 for one but you have to because of the captive market. If there was another channel providing half decent commentary Barber would lose his job tomorrow.

If there was another channel providing half decent commentary Barber would lose his job tomorrow. Dead right. Maybe we should write to Leicester Sound and ask them to put in a bid for the rights to match commentary. But it wouldn't matter anyway, because it would be up to the club (ie Mandaric) to decide who wins the contract. And I VERY much doubt whether he'd want to deal with anyone other than the demon!
James. Posted 2 January 2008 Posted 2 January 2008 Has anyone actually taken the time to write a letter of complaint to Radio Leicester?
C.J Posted 2 January 2008 Posted 2 January 2008 Can we get arlo white from 5live, he's a true city fan. I love reading his column in hte programme
Ultra Posted 2 January 2008 Posted 2 January 2008 Can we get arlo white from 5live, he's a true city fan. I love reading his column in hte programme As I said earlier in the thread, once folk move from local radio to Five Live, they never move back. Asking Arlo to go to Radio Leicester would be like asking a Man Utd player to move to Rochdale.

Exactly. It's their career after all. Five Live is the pinnacle for sports journalists in the UK (in terms of BBC radio) so they'd be foolish to drop back down to work with amateurs like Steve Walsh and Matt Piper. Plus BBC Radio Leicester won't have anywhere near the budget to pay the salaries that Five Live can afford.
samuel Posted 2 January 2008 Posted 2 January 2008 I went to school with Arlo.... Useless fact for you

I see what you mean, although I suspect the likes of Walsh and Piper may actually be paid for giving us the benefit of their opinions.. And Walshy at least can do the job reasonably well, even if he occasionally lets his ego run away with him.

Yeah, spose the next step up would be t.v work after that. But in his column he does say that he wishes he could get to the games more, so commentating on them would be ideal for him. Bet he gets pissed off when he's posted to other championship games or pride park.
harpendenfox Posted 2 January 2008 Posted 2 January 2008 I'm tempted to write to Radio Leicester and suggest they hold a competition in which members of the public audition for a go as match summariser. I'd much rather hear the sincerely held views of some of the pundits on here than the inarticulate ramblings of ex-players, however legendary they were when they wore the blue shirt. I might not always agree with the Thracians, Manwells, Simons etc etc, but it's clear they have a genuine love for the Club. However the BBC is obsessed with so called celebrity at all levels, so I fear the idea has little chance of success
morris1234 Posted 2 January 2008 Posted 2 January 2008 Who's the Derby fan? Is it him?Sure i've read someone who works for Radio Leicester and does the sport is a Derby fan. its LFF! duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuh

The Stig Posted 2 January 2008 Posted 2 January 2008 I'll do Barber's job. I'm sure I could do better. Saying that a blind nun would do better.
Lillehamring Posted 2 January 2008 Posted 2 January 2008 Once people reach Five Live (who incidentally employ at least two over-70s on a regular basis), they rarely, if ever, go back to local radio. So we won't be treated to Fletch or Collymore any time soon.. So, of course the answer to the problem is simple... ...you're not very good, ...you're not very good, ...you're not very, ...you're not very, ...you're not very gooooooood!
Darkzzz_ Posted 2 January 2008 Posted 2 January 2008 is barber really a sheep shagger?? i cant believe it, lets pay walsh in booze to slap him about during commentry!!

Wasyls Pec Deck Posted 4 January 2008 Posted 4 January 2008 [email protected]the twat left his email on 606. enjoy! heres the link http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/606/A30587529 - and if you cant be arsed to click on it...heres what he said! Hello All, Thanks very much for the comments. I relly mean that - even if most of you would like me to curl up and die!!! We only talk about "other" things when the ball is out of play, or bobbling around in the midfield with nothing much going on. I try and make that as clear as I can, but will take your comments on board. Matt Piper has only recently joines the commentary team in the last couple of months. He is really keen, and someone who I know many of you really enjoyed as a player. I think Matt brings a really personal insight into the game. He can tell you what the players will be thinking; how they would approach a certain situation ... something I cant add to the commentary. Matt is doing the away matches, and Steve Walsh the home games. For those that were asking about the commentary; we don't have "international" broadcast rights ... they are owned by the clubs, and that is why our commentary is on their pay to listen sites. However, the BBC does have international rights for the FA Cup, so you can hear tomorrow's game by going to bbc.co.uk/leicester. Thanks again for the comments; if any of you want to get hold of me personally, you can email me at [email protected]. Cheers He aint half a tit aint he
dandannieldanok Posted 4 January 2008 Posted 4 January 2008 Haha, someone post on 6-0-6 and tell him to join Foxestalk.
