lookwhaticando Posted 4 January 2008 Posted 4 January 2008 He's already on FT I think... as BBCLeicesterSport or something.
Corky Posted 4 January 2008 Posted 4 January 2008 I'm have an account on 606, but I thought it wise not to invite him on here, for his own good
Collymore Posted 5 January 2008 Posted 5 January 2008 You have to give him some credit for replying on there. I don't think the fact that he's a bad person has ever been an issue, he's just a terrible commentator!
Manwell Pablo Posted 5 January 2008 Posted 5 January 2008 The thing is I know his definition of "bobbling about in midfield" and it takes up 60-75% of the game. Do you hear Alan Green breaking off and talking to his co commentator about Cheese for 15 minutes and then claim "you've not missed much the balls only bobbling about in midfield" no, every kick near enough is commentated on. If there is a break off it lasts for about 2 minutes then it's back on to the game, in fact they only really quibble on like old grannies when a player is down injured. It's not just that either, it's the fact that he will totally forget which player plays for who at times like Bednar "On loan from Arsenal" and Stylian Petorov apparently scoreing for Man City when of course it was Martin Petorov. Worst of all Reading playing at the JJB it's basic basic stuff, and it's every week. As Collymore says it's not about him personally he's just not very good at his job, and either deludes himself into thinking he is or just doesn't care that he's terrible at it. Matt Piper should be left alone, yes his voice is a bit droney and he has a pretty heavy Leicester accent (then I bet alot of people on here do as well) but he's a Leiccester lad who did everything he could for this club include moving to Sunderland when he didn't really want to. He's suffered some absloutley horrfic injurys which have prevented him from doing the only thing he is exceptionally talented at. It's nice to see him involved in football again, it's not as if he's ruining our previous high standerds of commentating and it's not as if Steve Walsh is any better.

I don't think the fact that he's a bad person has ever been an issue, he's just a terrible commentator! Agreed I think the main fact is that local radio presenters are local radio presenters for one of two reasons they are just starting out and aren't very good yet as they are learning the job or they are journeymen presenters who are not good enough for national radio either one has a not very good factor attached to it. The only thing that really annoys me about Barbers commentary is the fact that he always seems to get more excited when the other team scores against Leicester I have to listen twice before I actually register who has scored it's not an easy job to commentate on the radio and give people and honest and accurate perspective of whats going on

I know of quite a few Leicester fans who sign up to world for a year and listen to the other teams local commentry just to get away from him. When Leicester don't have a game I sometimes stick Forest or Derby on whilst watching the scores come in and their commentators are far from perfect but they are in a different league to Barber. I wouldn't mind if it was the occasional mistake about a players age or past clubs but when you're claiming that Reading, a Premier League club, play at the JJB, not once but twice in one broadcast, you know your not a football commentator.
The Stig Posted 5 January 2008 Posted 5 January 2008 He isn't great, but sounds like a nice chap, hopefully he'll improve.
Hammster Posted 5 January 2008 Posted 5 January 2008 He is a bit of an idiot but if you wanna tell him why don't you phone for the post match talk or text crap to him
Ultra Posted 6 January 2008 Posted 6 January 2008 heres the link http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/606/A30587529 - and if you cant be arsed to click on it...heres what he said!Hello All, Thanks very much for the comments. I relly mean that - even if most of you would like me to curl up and die!!! We only talk about "other" things when the ball is out of play, or bobbling around in the midfield with nothing much going on. I try and make that as clear as I can, but will take your comments on board. Matt Piper has only recently joines the commentary team in the last couple of months. He is really keen, and someone who I know many of you really enjoyed as a player. I think Matt brings a really personal insight into the game. He can tell you what the players will be thinking; how they would approach a certain situation ... something I cant add to the commentary. Matt is doing the away matches, and Steve Walsh the home games. For those that were asking about the commentary; we don't have "international" broadcast rights ... they are owned by the clubs, and that is why our commentary is on their pay to listen sites. However, the BBC does have international rights for the FA Cup, so you can hear tomorrow's game by going to bbc.co.uk/leicester. Thanks again for the comments; if any of you want to get hold of me personally, you can email me at [email protected]. Cheers He aint half a tit aint he He couldn't even get his own email address right...
isaidno Posted 14 January 2008 Posted 14 January 2008 In the comentary on saturday, Barber said we were the only team to take a point from Ipswich
MikeyT Posted 14 January 2008 Posted 14 January 2008 In the comentary on saturday, Barber said we were the only team to take a point from Ipswich So what was his commentating like on Saturday then?
Steven Posted 14 January 2008 Posted 14 January 2008 So what was his commentating like on Saturday then? I listened to the Coventry radio, so I didn't hear him. Probably crap.
mat_j101 Posted 14 January 2008 Posted 14 January 2008 Matt Piper is the worst person i think ive ever heard commentating on Leicester. Im sorry, but the guy just doesnt have the voice to do radio. Im not doubting he can tell you what players may be thinking etc.., but i dont care, he speaks like an idiot, and keeps bringing up the 'swaz'. Hes crap. I switched it off last time i was listening, and just settled for the Gillette Soccer Saturday. Get him off the air!

Blue Bob Posted 14 January 2008 Posted 14 January 2008 Have to agree, erm... but he makes Barber sound good! Piper is crap but I wouldnt go as far to say he makes Barber look good .... he's crap too. The difference is Piper has an excuse, he is a footballer not a commentator by trade, Barber is and he is still awful.
Solihullfox Posted 14 January 2008 Posted 14 January 2008 I listened to the Coventry radio, so I didn't hear him. Probably crap. What was the verdict on the match, Leicester's performance etc ?
Claymore Posted 14 January 2008 Posted 14 January 2008 What was the verdict on the match, Leicester's performance etc ? We won
Lillehamring Posted 15 January 2008 Posted 15 January 2008 last couple of games he has improved, especially with piper, he is worse with walshy cause they just talk like mates, piper is in a dream world so barber has no one to play off... but he is talking about the game more now, and the references to players seemed to match the various ratings and comments given by those attending (not that that was so tricky!) he also got excited when we were attacking, i figure he loves the hungarians... he ain't great but you get the feeling he reads what people are saying about him, cause he has picked up of late, corrected some of the faults mentioned on forums like this...
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 15 January 2008 Posted 15 January 2008 I don't think that Barber is just a crap commentator, but also incredibly rude. He often interrupts his co-commentator in an abrupt way in total disregard of whatever they are saying. Belltower.
Hullfox Posted 15 January 2008 Posted 15 January 2008 You should link them to the following threadsThis one of course (my original Poll) http://www.foxestalk.co.uk/forums/index.ph...7&hl=barber http://www.foxestalk.co.uk/forums/index.ph...3&hl=barber http://www.foxestalk.co.uk/forums/index.ph...0&hl=barber http://www.foxestalk.co.uk/forums/index.ph...0&hl=barber Good one by Tharcian.. http://www.foxestalk.co.uk/forums/index.ph...7&hl=barber That's actually not a very good idea sending links to posts on here. All it does is show him that he's not the only willy puller talking about football.
rockinrobin Posted 15 January 2008 Posted 15 January 2008 Wasn't Walshy in the commentary box on Saturday? Yes, he had to correct barber a couple of times ie; barber "mattocks being sick on the pitch", walshie "er no i think he's just winded." Barber; "kisnorbo's being stitched up at the side of the pitch." Walshie; "er no he would have to go down the tunnel for that" ... I counted 4 mistakes in the first half hour then i lost count!! tosspot!!
Sniffer-Clarke Posted 15 January 2008 Posted 15 January 2008 Yes. Bring back nev foulger for radio leicester, barber thinks he is radio leicesters answer to MOTTY Wot a prat.
OzFox311 Posted 16 January 2008 Posted 16 January 2008 Oh cmon people... give Barber credit, he allows us to talk about fish, the cloud formations, the fashion in milan and the his local trips to the service station all whilst also giving a 'quality' commentary of the game 'LOL'... lol SERIOUSLY, yep living in Australia, it's either this or listen to World Service and get updates of the game... so I listen to Barber and friends and sadly, it's not good... I want to hear about my team, no matter how bad they are going... not to learn about the importance of Qatar's exports... yes they talked about that one week. World Service isn't that bad these days, they are doing more updates so it's better and I hear more of the highlights... but yeah still, I would like to have a proper commentary of the match... for all of us who can't be there.
