bigneville Posted 14 January 2008 Posted 14 January 2008 After watching saturdays game and having a good old look at all the new signings, i must say i'm impressed with all but one. Ben Alnwick. Did anyone else notice how poor his kicking was? Also his lack of communication with the back four? And his stuttering nature when the ball came into the box? Now i know the lad is young and it was his first game, and i'm more than prepared for him to prove me wrong next weekend at Norwich. But i am concerned. Maybe its because of the high standard we got from Fulop, but i honestly don't feel confident with that kid on our goal at the moment. Fulop inspired us, made us feel like it was going to take a great ball into the box or a quality finish for the opposition to score. I felt on saturday everytime they got any half decent towards our goal, he looked like he was panicking. Just wondering if anyone else had these views or concerns? And before you start i'm not saying drop him, just raising some concerns.
Tommy G Posted 14 January 2008 Posted 14 January 2008 I wasn't at the game but Barber pronounced it as ''Annick''? perhaps that is the correct pronunciation but it sounded odd.
Maybes Posted 14 January 2008 Posted 14 January 2008 I thought he did alright. At least he can catch. Even Alnwicks kicking is better than hendo's.

Fez of Mahrez Posted 14 January 2008 Posted 14 January 2008 Had f**k all to do. Can't judge him and no real point getting on his back at this stage. Sorry mate, bit of a stupid thread though.
Fox You Forest Posted 14 January 2008 Posted 14 January 2008 He seemed steady enough to me. Wasn't tested though. True, The defence held a good line all game giving him little if not nothing to do.

I'm not judging him, and i hope he goes and has a wonder game on saturday. But CovScum only got near our box a couple of times, and he didnt fill me with any confidence at all. I was just seeing if it was just me being harsh, or if anyone else felt this way also?
Mack Posted 14 January 2008 Posted 14 January 2008 I agree 100% mate. Fulop gave the back 4 great faith and confidence. When you have a great player between the posts as a defender you can be more assured in your play, knowing someone like Fulop is there to back you up if needed. I'm sure Alnwick is a great on for the future but we really need Fulop back to make our team complete. I hope Alnwick is just a fire fighting measure by Ollie with view to a more experienced keeper taking the role in the long term.

And before you start i'm not saying drop him, just raising some concerns. I kinda get what you are saying, and i agree it was his first game for us and yes he is young. I also agree that our standards have been raised since Marton Fulop. But we also have to give the lad a chance. Lets see how he gets on against Norwich next week! I'm sure alot of it was nerves as well. Maybe he was trying too hard to impress. Either way, he's only played one game and didnt really have anything to do in that apart from that one error with Stearman. Good luck to him though!!
Ric Flair Posted 14 January 2008 Posted 14 January 2008 I thought he had one helluva kick on him and Stearman mentioned how his kicking is a real asset when we signed him last week.
Wilkesy Posted 14 January 2008 Posted 14 January 2008 I feel more confident with him between the sticks than Henderson, so im happy.
bigneville Posted 14 January 2008 Author Posted 14 January 2008 I thought he had one helluva kick on him and Stearman mentioned how his kicking is a real asset when we signed him last week. And i thought it lacked accuracy nearly on many occasions. Still better than Henderson's though.

He's a promising keeper, we don't have to play Henderson, we couldn't afford Fulop's overinflated transfer fee and I think we're lucky to have Alnwick to be honest, saving transfer fees for the likes of Oakley and Howard who will win us games. Fulop is a hard act to follow.
Maybes Posted 14 January 2008 Posted 14 January 2008 I feel more confident with him between the sticks than Henderson, so im happy. Me too. Better than flappy hendo
bigneville Posted 14 January 2008 Author Posted 14 January 2008 I feel more confident with him between the sticks than Henderson, so im happy. Thus is true!
James. Posted 14 January 2008 Posted 14 January 2008 Poor kicking? Not sure where that comes from... he found Howard on a number of occassions. As others have said though it's far too early to make a judgement either way. Coventry did f**k all to test him. The only thing I noticed was that he never kicks out of his hands. Just an observation.
Ric Flair Posted 14 January 2008 Posted 14 January 2008 Rumours that Fulop is joining on a permanent deal before the end of January anyway from those in the know on TB.
AyewJoking Posted 14 January 2008 Posted 14 January 2008 I think Alnwicks OK. He needs to harness his kicking but that will come.
Unit Posted 14 January 2008 Posted 14 January 2008 I think his big mistake (that resulted in a cov open goal, that they missed ) was due to him being new and not quite knowing what it was that stearman/mcauley were going to do. Give him a few weeks! Poor kicking? Not sure where that comes from... he found Howard on a number of occassions. As others have said though it's far too early to make a judgement either way. Coventry did f**k all to test him.The only thing I noticed was that he never kicks out of his hands. Just an observation. He did once or twice, he seems to do that weird kind of dropping onto one knee when he kicks too
Monk Posted 14 January 2008 Posted 14 January 2008 That mess up on the edge of the box was definitely McAuley's fault there was no way it was ever going to roll into the box in time for him to pick it up. Communication will come with time. Other than the kicks which went straight to the other goalie he was OK. Probably used to playing on a bigger pitch.
Fox You Forest Posted 14 January 2008 Posted 14 January 2008 Rumours that Fulop is joining on a permanent deal before the end of January anyway from those in the know on TB. I hope so Got a Link?
Manwell Pablo Posted 14 January 2008 Posted 14 January 2008 I thought he had one helluva kick on him and Stearman mentioned how his kicking is a real asset when we signed him last week. I found it an odd thing to have a dig at him about, Fulops kicking was hardly brilliant.
mat_j101 Posted 14 January 2008 Posted 14 January 2008 Did anyone else notice how poor his kicking was? Also his lack of communication with the back four? And his stuttering nature when the ball came into the box? I think all of these are attributable to his relatively short time spent with his new team before the game and inexperience. Even so, i thought he was fine. Didnt really get much of a chance to judge him, but he looked OK. The balls up with Stearman was Stearmans fault, he should have just cleared it. With that said, i would still love us to sign Marton! He was a class above the rest in this division.
brookfox Posted 14 January 2008 Posted 14 January 2008 Two things I noticed. 1) He does a weird kneel thing after every kick off the ground. 2) Having got used to Fulop in goal, he looked small!
