davieG Posted 23 January 2008 Posted 23 January 2008 From the Merc Reserves "can knock at first-team door" Assistant manager Tim Breacker is looking for players to be "knocking on the first-team door" when Leicester City Reserves resume their campaign against Stoke tonight (7.0). City will field a side containing a mixture of youth and experience for the Pontin's Central Division game at Hinckley United's Marston's Stadium. The likes of first-teamers Paul Henderson, Andy King and Alan Sheehan are likely to be included as well as talents such as Lee Cox and Billy McKay. And Breacker sees it as an important stepping stone for the club's youngsters and a chance for them to stake their claim for the senior side. Breaker said: "The team will be a mixture of a couple of experienced players and young players who will be getting their chance. "There are some young players who have been around the first-team squad and they will play. "We want the games to be as real as possible and that level is the next step-up from the youth team. "Ideally we would like a few of these players knocking on the first-team door."

"Ideally we would like a few of these players knocking on the first-team door." For any "close-to-the-first-team" players this is simply fitness training. They could play brilliantly but they won't get in. Kingy's the nearest but our first choice midfield equals Oakley/Clemence/Wesolowski (senior players). It's nailed on. Barring injury King has no chance and even then we've been chasing a fourth midfielder. Even when King's done well and improved things he's been dropped and allowed to lose fitness. The few minutes he got at Norwich when unfit would likely have done more harm than good. Left-back equals Mattock plus new signing. Sheehan has already created more than any left-back we've had for as long as I can remember. If that's not good enough he'll have next to no chance. Time he left while he's got some recent form on the radar. As for the promising Lee Cox, Ryan Beswick (maybe) and Billy McKay it'll be just be more "flying hours". The reserves side is pretty poor as a unit these days compared to the integrated team of two years ago and I'd be surprised if anyone stands out for long. There just isn't the pace and passing within the team to really bring people on. So far we've wasted this reserves season pissing about with the likes of Ferreira and about seven other players who either were never going to make our first team or who never will. Little has been achieved because there's not been the structure around which to achieve it. The Nottingham Forest outing was an embarrassment. Bloody hell we had some no-hopers in that lot. And if you think the above is too blunt, we'll see as the season continues. I shall go along more in hope than expectation.
ronnup Posted 23 January 2008 Posted 23 January 2008 So far we've wasted this reserves season pissing about with the likes of Ferreira and about seven other players who either were never going to make our first team or who never will. To be fair mate, it's the reserves. We had to try and see what people were made of and how they played. Reserves will never really be a cohesive unit proper as they'll have to play first team games, now and again. They're, in reserve, if you will. I'd rather palyers that we pissed about with in the resrves were doing exactly that than in the first team. You'll always be dissapointed supporting reserve teams as it's not that kind of set up in my view.
davieG Posted 23 January 2008 Author Posted 23 January 2008 OS Leicester City's reserve side return to Pontin's League action tonight when they take on Stoke City at the Marston's Stadium. The Foxes are currently ninth in the Pontin's Central Division, and will field a mixture of youth and experience for the visit of the Potters. Paul Henderson, James Chambers, Alan Sheehan and Matty Fryatt all start for the Foxes while Andy King will be looking to build on his recent exploits in the first team. Kick off is at 7pm. City: Henderson, J Chambers, Sheehan, Cox, Rowe-Turner, Garner, C King, A King, Fryatt, McKay, Beswick Subs: Steven Howard, Pentney, Burns, John, O'Neil
shen Posted 23 January 2008 Posted 23 January 2008 Surprised to see Howard named on the bench! And strange that A Chambers doesn't feature..

I just feel that players progress well in the Under 18's because the team becomes an established unit. They benefit from the teamspirit and knowledge of each others ways of playing. The reserves used to function similarly but in a tougher grade of football and there's some suggestion the club is going back to that but it hasn't been the case lately. They've been a mishmash of often unsympathetic parts so far, ordinary youth players, out of favour seniors and inconsequential imports who've now, mostly gone I think. Heavy defeats by Hinckley and Forest only emphasised what a mess they were. I may be wrong but it wouldn't be the sort of situation I'd expect would help promising players through to the first team. We'll see what the second half brings but I'm not optimistic.
Simi Posted 23 January 2008 Posted 23 January 2008 Surprised to see Howard named on the bench! And strange that A Chambers doesn't feature.. Theres another Howard isn't there?
Calum McDermott Posted 23 January 2008 Posted 23 January 2008 John may come on to clear up the arguments on the jorrin jhon thread that was closed.
Ric Flair Posted 23 January 2008 Posted 23 January 2008 Surprised to see Howard named on the bench! And strange that A Chambers doesn't feature.. Chambers was taken off at half-time at the weekend, may be injured.
Staf Posted 23 January 2008 Posted 23 January 2008 I actually havent seen the reserves play for ages i must get down and watch them actually how much is it to get in ?
Thracian Posted 23 January 2008 Posted 23 January 2008 Most interesting to me is that they're playing James Chambers at right back, that Fryatt's getting a run to keep him sharp and that Ryan Beswick should start making an impression on the left again. Oh yes and, presumably, that's Jorrin John on the bench so he might make his debut. That might be fun to watch but we'll see. Everytime I've seen him so far he's been on some bench or another. He must be sick of sitting down.
Jimmy Posted 23 January 2008 Posted 23 January 2008 Hasn't Andy King been playing for the U18s when not needed for the 1st team, meaning his fitness levels should be fine also isn't that back 4 made up of four full backs?

Pretty sure that's always Craig King in the under 18s. Don't think Andy King has played for them at all this season. Garner is a centre-back and Rowe-Turner has played a fair bit at centre-back too, particularly this season for the reserves. I would imagine it'll be Cox and Chambers on the right hand side, not sure which way round.

Jonbluefox9 Posted 23 January 2008 Posted 23 January 2008 Looks a decent team. A mixture of 1st teamers, young pros, 2nd and 1st year scholars, due to Craig King starting. Even got a schoolboy on the bench so there's a bit of everything in there. Not seen much of John but got to see him playing for the under 16s earlier this season and he looked impressive although the opposition looked a bit of a shambles that day too.

Looks to me like James Chambers will be right-back and alan Sheehan left-back with Lee Cox probably right midfield. Cox seems to cope being full-back or midfielder quite easily.
Unabomber Posted 23 January 2008 Posted 23 January 2008 Just got back won 2 - 1 with King scoring a screamer after Billy Mckay's opener. Big Jon Parkin coverted an outrageous penalty decision for them. I was also sat next to Joe Mattock and infront of Stearman Weso and numerous glamerous wags.

Unabomber Posted 23 January 2008 Posted 23 January 2008 Anyone else slightly confused by that mini-report or is it just me I think we've established that I meant 2 -1 and all I did was say the score and the scorers. I'm not one for long in depth reports. Wait for Thracian.
