Monk Posted 30 January 2008 Posted 30 January 2008 In follow up to JTB's thread on Cuba I thought I would extend a plea of knowledge to my fellow FTers on an upcoming trip of my own. In April I'm going to travel around Chile for 3 weeks with my lady. No tours or anything just car hire & buses and boats. Anyone been there or got any knowledge on the place? I have a rough route planned but not really much knowledge on the place... Answers on a postcard
Manwell Pablo Posted 30 January 2008 Posted 30 January 2008 I believe they speak Spanish, and like Marcelo Salas.
Ric Flair Posted 30 January 2008 Posted 30 January 2008 I believe they speak Spanish, and like Marcelo Salas. A bit like me then, just without being able to speak much Spanish. I still think we could tempt Salas to Leicester. Hasn't Daggers done a stint in Chile?

Daggers Posted 30 January 2008 Posted 30 January 2008 There's no Pepsi Max in Chile. Although there may be a Pepsi Máximo, I don't really know.

Daggers Posted 31 January 2008 Posted 31 January 2008 Loughborough or Leicester? CheersI already have a rough guide and speak spanish I was just wondering if anyone had been there and had any tips. Clearly not! I have friends living there - If you want I could always drop them a line to see if they'd put you up for a couple of days?
SantiagoFox Posted 4 February 2008 Posted 4 February 2008 Chile is a great place. Very hot in the desert to the north, like the south of Spain in the centre, like Britain further south, and very cold at the very bottom. It's got very good coach travel throughout. Excellent metro system in Santiago. Lake District is very picturesque, with added volcanoes. You're never far from the mountains or the beach. Great seafood. Very modern in the big cities. Some dodgy bits too. Whilst you're there, try to go to a game. Avoid Colo-Colo they're the Man U equivalent and a right bunch of w*nkers. Universidad de Chile have the best bunch of fans, but try not to get too near to the fireworks. Buy the newspaper La Tercera on a Friday or Saturday to get the fixtures. Been there loads of times, got the T-shirts, girly etc. Have fun!
Monk Posted 4 February 2008 Author Posted 4 February 2008 Are you actually from Santiago, Santiago Fox? Why support Leicester from such a distance. I will try and make a game. Enjoyed watching the Costa Rican cup final last year, so I intend to continue the madness. Como te llama de el grande clubs?
Floating Fox Posted 5 February 2008 Posted 5 February 2008 Are you actually from Santiago, Santiago Fox? He's from Loughborough, but lived/worked out there for long periods.

Enjoyed watching the Costa Rican cup final last year, so I intend to continue the madness. Como te llama de el grande clubs? Mr.StandupAndSing is correct. I am from Loughborough. Los clubs mas grandes son Colo Colo (huevones), Universidad de Chile (la "U"!), y Universidad Catolica, all in Santiago. Colo Colo own their own ground, Monumental, next to line 5 of the metro. Pinochet bought it for them (!). U. de Chile play at the National Stadium, or Santa Laura. The National Stadium is not far from line 5 either. Universidad Catolica have a smaller ground, and have more money; they're on the edge of the city to the east (bus required). Or if you are out in the sticks, try one of their grounds. You need to buy a paper to find out which day and time they're playing on, as they often leave it late to decide. Good thing is that you can buy a ticket on the day of the game, with the exception of a Colo Colo versus U game. If you go to a U game, the Galeria at the National Stadium (South end of ground) is where the atmosphere is. The game is less hectic than here. Look out for the injured player cart with a local hospital service advert on the side; it says in English "Help". Have fun!
