The People's Hero Posted 25 February 2008 Posted 25 February 2008 FORD FOCUS ST. TOYOTA CELICA. SKODA OCTAVIA vRS. MAZDA RX8. MAZDA 6. The Mazda 6 clearly being the most sensible of the lost. Thinking of binning the convertible as it's the time of year to get rid, plus I want something with a boot. It's still needs to be fairly sporty though, cos I'm vain like that.
danny. Posted 25 February 2008 Posted 25 February 2008 What about an MG ZT or MG ZS with the 2.5V6 engine, not slow by any means and pretty cheap to pick up compared to the list you have there (and in the ZT a much better car IMHO) wouldn't took an rx8 with a bargepole, fuel economy about 15mpg and an oil topup everytime you fill up with fuel

The RX8 was looking favourite, even with poor fuel economy. What's the deal with MG now in terms of servicing etc as they went bust didn't they? Parts? etc.
danny. Posted 25 February 2008 Posted 25 February 2008 servicing no problem, any garage will do it and loads of the ex dealers that now do ford, citroen etc will do it too if you want an official dealer with high prices to do it parts, no problems, plus they are starting to remake the zt/75 soon anyway (already are in china i think) I've had a zt190 for bit over a year now and never had a single problem with it ever, best car I've owned by miles (car before was a brabus roadster made by the 'brilliant' mercedes, cost me almost 20k and was in the dealers about 8-9 times in the first year or so with problems)
The People's Hero Posted 25 February 2008 Author Posted 25 February 2008 It's effectively a rover 75 with souped up engine and sportier stylings, am I right? What engine/spec should I look for/ look to avoid?
danny. Posted 25 February 2008 Posted 25 February 2008 It's effectively a rover 75 with souped up engine and sportier stylings, am I right? What engine/spec should I look for/ look to avoid? yea basically, much nicer interior (looks like a BMW) different suspension, wheels etc. I've got a 190 which is the 2.5v6, great engine very smooth (or revvy, depending on what you want to do with it), great on motorways (does 150 no probs), just a bit thirsty (25 around town, 45 on a run), the diesels are pretty good but not as quick. Wouldn't touch a 1.8 at all, too underpowered what's your budget anyway?
Bellend Sebastian Posted 25 February 2008 Posted 25 February 2008 Is it my imagination or do FT posters generally have ridiculously flash cars? And here I am trying to scrape the money together for a 3 year old Astra. Somethings gone awry somewhere

Master Fox Posted 25 February 2008 Posted 25 February 2008 It's got a sporty rear spoiler? Pretty sweet motor.
Tommy G Posted 25 February 2008 Posted 25 February 2008 If you've got the budget then go for one of these, Orange obviously...
danny. Posted 25 February 2008 Posted 25 February 2008 I realy love those in orange, nice shape too with the body kit not sure if I could bring myself to buy one though, as they are afterall.. a ford focus
The People's Hero Posted 25 February 2008 Author Posted 25 February 2008 If you've got the budget then go for one of these, Orange obviously... Yeah - I'm trying to arrange a test drive. Orange or Performance Blue.
Tommy G Posted 25 February 2008 Posted 25 February 2008 In gun metal grey, also get the 2.5 litre one, it abserloutely flies. You could pick up an 04 plate for about 15K..ish

Tommy G Posted 25 February 2008 Posted 25 February 2008 15k for the logo? Well yes if you think BMW is prestigious now? It's not really though with the amount of fu ck ers driving around in them. Not many Z4's on the road though, and I personally think its the best looking affordable sports car.
danny. Posted 25 February 2008 Posted 25 February 2008 it's not a bad logo, I wouldn't pay 15k for it tho
Bellend Sebastian Posted 25 February 2008 Posted 25 February 2008 Who the hell has got 15k to spend on anything?
Tommy G Posted 25 February 2008 Posted 25 February 2008 Who the hell has got 15k to spend on anything? Either save up or finance. It also depends on your salary aswell I guess...?

Tommy G Posted 25 February 2008 Posted 25 February 2008 Who said anything about a Z4? I just see a logo. Eh? On mine it looks like a picture of a Z4 next to some mountains? Thats odd, what can you see then?
andyh1884 Posted 25 February 2008 Posted 25 February 2008 Who the hell has got 15k to spend on anything? I do, but it's going on a deposit on our new house rather than something that'll drop 20% in value as soon as you've pulled off the forecourt
Tommy G Posted 25 February 2008 Posted 25 February 2008 I do, but it's going on a deposit on our new house rather than something that'll drop 20% in value as soon as you've pulled off the forecourt Yeh your totally correct. I would never buy a new car due to the depreciation suffered in the first year of purchase. Your better off getting one 12 months/18 months old with a few thousand miles on the cock. cars really arent a good investment money wise, you'd be better off buying one thats semi decent and putting the rest of your money in property, or an ISA? At least then it will grow in value
Bellend Sebastian Posted 25 February 2008 Posted 25 February 2008 Either save up or finance. It also depends on your salary aswell I guess...? Well, my salary's not bad at all but once the Council Tax and Mortgage and all the other bills come out of it there's not exactly loads left. I'm unusual though in that I refuse to borrow money to buy a car - which probably explains why I've always had pretty crappy cars. The mighty Astra has cost me about £130 a month to own over nearly 5 years, taking into account depreciation and all running costs (except petrol). Everyone should drive a crappy old Astra. We'd all be rich! Rich!

We'd all be rich! Rich! it's down to personal choice at the end of the day. A lot of people who have brand new cars are often company cars so you have to take that into consideration when your looking around. Anyone that buys cars brand new either has 1) Too much money 2) They're thick
