AoWW Posted 25 February 2008 Posted 25 February 2008 What about an MG ZT or MG ZS with the 2.5V6 engine, not slow by any means and pretty cheap to pick up compared to the list you have there (and in the ZT a much better car IMHO)wouldn't took an rx8 with a bargepole, fuel economy about 15mpg and an oil topup everytime you fill up with fuel Totally agree, I haven't owned one myself but have driven several. Performance is good, no denying that, but the twin rotary engine is 'odd' to say the least - needs lots of TLC in terms of keeping oil meticulously topped up - but heaven forbd if you should ever over fill it! - and, yes, it will drink oil like it's going out of fashion. Also, they're very inclined on start up to flood at the drop of a hat - not what you need when you're in a hurry to be someplace. It's the abysmal fuel economy that put me off the most though - 15mpg is fairly generous, tbh - it's not so bad if you just tootle around but who the hell is going to do that in that kinda car? I drove up to Newcastle and back in one 'mixed-driving-conditions' journey, some sitting in traffic but nothing major - mainly motorway/dual carriageway, and, yes, I admit to being pretty lead-footed in it coming back late at night, but the average mpg for the journey was only 10mpg - shocking! I was pretty disappointed in the build quality too - it felt 'tinny'. Yes, the suicide doors are flash and a bit of a statement and there are some advantages in being able to seat 4 adults fairly comfortably - which is virtually unheard of in this type of car. But, no, I would never buy one. I can see those rotary engines being a BIG problem as they start to get older... maybe they won't be, but it's not a risk I'd be willing to take.

My next door neighborur had one. He though it was the dogs knackers when he first bought it but was forever complaining about it after 6 months. I don't think he could move it at night (e.g. a quick adjustment to parking) otherwise it wouldn't start in the morning!

danny. Posted 25 February 2008 Posted 25 February 2008 10mph!!! haha, thats so bad, with petrol the price it is, no wonder nobody wants an RX-8 anymore. The used prices are crazy
Tommy G Posted 25 February 2008 Posted 25 February 2008 10mph!!! haha, thats so bad, with petrol the price it is, no wonder nobody wants an RX-8 anymore. The used prices are crazy do you mean 10mpg or is it just me danny?

The People's Hero Posted 25 February 2008 Author Posted 25 February 2008 Right - I won't get an RX8 then. What about Hyundai Coupes, are they any good? I'm literally brainstorming here.
Dr The Singh Posted 25 February 2008 Posted 25 February 2008 Right - I won't get an RX8 then. What about Hyundai Coupes, are they any good? I'm literally brainstorming here. My mate has one, and he rates them highly!! But if you want a car with a boot, then why don't you go for a 'sporty hatch, then a coupe, has this got anything to do with the marriage mags and homebaking recipes you keep on recieving from your lady????'
Tabou Posted 25 February 2008 Posted 25 February 2008 Yeh your totally correct. I would never buy a new car due to the depreciation suffered in the first year of purchase. Your better off getting one 12 months/18 months old with a few thousand miles on the cock.cars really arent a good investment money wise, you'd be better off buying one thats semi decent and putting the rest of your money in property, or an ISA? At least then it will grow in value I put a shed load of cash into numerous ISA's and non of them gave me anything like the yield i was expecting. And lets not get started on the property market (and I work in the Financial Industry!) Spend 10k on Beer and sex...then waste the rest.
AoWW Posted 25 February 2008 Posted 25 February 2008 Right - I won't get an RX8 then. What about Hyundai Coupes, are they any good? I'm literally brainstorming here. Look much flasher than they actually are. I'd only ever consider one of the bigger engined / higher spec'd models as the performance can be surprisingly woeful. There's no getting away from the fact that it's a Hyundai, really... depends how 'brand' conscious you are. Watch out for ones that have had the bollocks thrashed off them or been heavily modified. Can't say I've ever really heard of any reliability problems though.

lookwhaticando Posted 25 February 2008 Posted 25 February 2008 There's no getting away from the fact that it's a Hyundai, really... depends how 'brand' conscious you are. Judging by the presence of a Toyota in that list, alongside a Ford... I'd say brand isn't too important here.

It's got more to do with the fact that her car is falling to bits, to be honest. Need at least one sensible (ish) car. I'm at a loss as to what to go for. I'm fighting the urge to splash it all on a ridiculously poorly built, unreliable alfa romeo 159!
Ric Flair Posted 25 February 2008 Posted 25 February 2008 It's all about the Audi's. Get an Audi, even if you have to settle for the supermarket instead.

Don't do it, your better off spending the money on cosmetic surgery on yourself, and getting yourself a boob job or something!!! What about: Audi S3/S4 Golf GTI/GT TDi Astra SRi New Shape Mazda 6 One of those sporty SEAT's Any decent others I kind think of
Alexikokopops Posted 25 February 2008 Posted 25 February 2008 Join me and Fez. You know you want to...
The People's Hero Posted 25 February 2008 Author Posted 25 February 2008 Join me and Fez.You know you want to... That's what I've been encouraging my girlfriend to get. Toyotas are good, reliable cars IMO. Her KA is sh it.

Then you can drive it with us and we can form a convoy of three silver Yarii, capturing any stray ones we find on the M25 and forcing them to join our gang.

Hmm, I know where you're coming from. I've been lusting after a 3 litre Alfa GTV for months now. Famously temperamental and unreliable they need so much TLC you might as well pour money down the drain. But, fu ck me, they are so sexy. I want one...!!!<stamps foot> heart... head... heart... head... heart... head...
MC Prussian Posted 25 February 2008 Posted 25 February 2008 I'd highly advise against buying an Alfa Romeo. They're shit. Get a Vauxhall.
The People's Hero Posted 25 February 2008 Author Posted 25 February 2008 My head says - buy a Kia Cee'd new for peanuts. Very good level of trim and SEVEN year/100,000 mile warranty! My heart says, buy something beautiful, worry about everything else later.

Didn't you follow your heart last time, resulting in being poor for the past year? Be sensible, earn more money, then buy a flashy car! If you have more money there will be more times like Crystal Palace and Chelsea away!
