AoWW Posted 25 February 2008 Posted 25 February 2008 So far I've got a test drive lined up for a Kia Ceed and a Skoda Octavia.Check out my badge-blindness! Hmmmm Sort your inbox situ, eh?
Bryn Posted 25 February 2008 Posted 25 February 2008 Ford Focus ST is a fabulous car, highly rated by those in the industry as well I think.
Samilktray Posted 25 February 2008 Posted 25 February 2008 Ford Focus ST is a fabulous car, highly rated by those in the industry as well I think. Yeah it is a great car. Just didn't hold the same appeal as the RS though.
Bryn Posted 25 February 2008 Posted 25 February 2008 I'm guessing you're wanting something bigger but the Fiesta ST is also lovely.
Tommy G Posted 25 February 2008 Posted 25 February 2008 Quattro's are the bollocks mate. too right I'm looking for a diesel, can anyone recommend something? 8k or less an A3 Slightly out your price range for a decent one but these are beauty's!!
Bellend Sebastian Posted 25 February 2008 Posted 25 February 2008 There's a brand new BMW 335D Coupe parked outside my window. I'm not into cars, but I must admit that it's pretty sexy. 0-62 in 6.1 seconds. It's a blooming diesel!
act smiley Posted 25 February 2008 Posted 25 February 2008 I'm looking for a diesel, can anyone recommend something? 8k or less Seat Leon - based on the Golf mk4, just like the old Audi A3 is, with the same engine options and the dashboard is identical, but much cheaper than either. Get a good high spec one for under £5k. Don't think you can get the new A3's for £8k. Could get a BMW 320D I think though.

It's a blooming diesel! Well it is a 3.5 litre so Im not surprised its quick! Shame 3 series are now the most common fleet cars in the UK. I'm goin on audit to BMW next week which should be fun - not. I'll get sick of the sight of them after half a day. The M6 though....Sexytime! I'll never get sick of seeing them.
hebangsthedrums Posted 25 February 2008 Posted 25 February 2008 I'm biased as I've currently got the 2.2 CDTI and its fantastic but I agree with whoever said the Civic Type R. Excellent reliability and insane performance (the engine has been revved consistently at 20k revs in testing for sustained periods!!). If that is a bit too racy then the diesel is excellent - I get 50ish MPG out of mine and it can shift if you want it to - 0-60 in 8.9 I think which is good considering diesel/engine size. If you want something in the middle, a wise man knows that a Type S can be remapped to nearly match Type R performance, just needs a few other mods to ensure you don't ruin it. MG ZT is a great choice - my Dad had one as a company car for a while and we thought it might be a bit old mans car but it was lovely and very fast. His had been modified (Xpack I think) so not sure if they are all as nippy. As for parts there still out there - you only lose out on warranty and I'm guessing for the money your spending the cars would be outside of manufacturers anyway. If I had 5-10k I would buy a ZT. Leon is also a good choice - as mentioned in part it is a VW. Have heard th Cupra has issues however. Focus ST/SR - just don't. Cack. Mazda has all the issues mentioned plus I personally think they look a bit shit. Celica I don't know much about though I don't like the look of them either. Audi's are nice but pricey, particularly aftersales - they are cheaper than BMW/Merc to buy, but many dealer labour rates are similar. Skoda I'm not sure, don't really look anything special but your money will stretch quite a way and it got decent reviews. PS if you're buying on finance don't mention it till you've agreed a price.

This could be my favourite of the lot, brilliant car, looks good and very quick. My main qualm with it how ever is its too cushioned for a hot hatch, you can never really feel how fast your going, but if your going for comfort then superb choice.
skinnydipper Posted 25 February 2008 Posted 25 February 2008 I had an Alfa 156. Didn't have too many problems, looked smart and quite nice to drive but if you can cope with looking like a pimp for sensible money you'd be hard pushed to beat an Impreza WRX. You can probably pick up one thats a couple of years old for £12-14k.Great engines, fantastic to drive,225bhp and extremely reliable. I've got to chop mine in for a family car later in the year but despite taking a bit of stick from some mates I've loved having it

They are awesome and so much fun. Although I'm not a huge fan of the look of them, I'm very tempted to get one when I swap mine. But then, there's still my passion for the GTV to overcome - far prefer the look of that.

Got to accept that they are not objects of beauty but what a drive! I think Alfas are good, not as good a drive as an Impreza but the styling is great. As I said ,no major problems with my 156 but as a brand they're poor on reliability and that GTV won't look so good on the hard shoulder. At the risk of being called sexist I do wonder if a car's appearance is more of a factor for women. My wife's got a Beetle and next time round she's interested in a Mini.Their appeal is mostly based on their appearance rather than their driveability. Hope you'll forgive the generalisation!

Ah, but factor in the pulling power of being stranded on the hard shoulder with the GTV... I take your point over women being more interested in a car's appearance though and I think your generalisation is fairly accurate. I'm probably one of the exceptions in so far as I'm obsessive about performance too. As far as looks go, I'm just a big fan of coupes - it's a very limited market though - there are so few good options available that have decent performance rather than simply looking 'pretty'. *furtive attempt to hijack TPH's thread with my own query* - anyone know anything much about Fiat Coupes? I've a feeling they're as unreliable as the Alfa - similar in so many other respects.
act smiley Posted 26 February 2008 Posted 26 February 2008 Fiat Coupes are awesome. Think they're meant to be pretty high-maintainance and okay reliability wise if everythings been replaced at the right time etc., but thats a big if. They're lovely though, meant to be pretty fast. I want MG ZT is a great choice - my Dad had one as a company car for a while and we thought it might be a bit old mans car but it was lovely and very fast. His had been modified (Xpack I think) so not sure if they are all as nippy. They do look rather good, the V8 is a proper bargain. Shame I'm too skint. Leon is also a good choice - as mentioned in part it is a VW. Have heard th Cupra has issues however. How-so? Can't imagine too much difference between them and the regular ones? Focus ST/SR - just don't. Cack. Why? I mean, ok its meant to be disproportionately costly to run but is it that bad?
The People's Hero Posted 26 February 2008 Author Posted 26 February 2008 I'm a bit muddled at the moment. Need to have a proper think. Perhaps the ZT is the way to go. It's heart vs head.

Or get a middle of the road 5k car that will run decent and you wont have any problems with. And put the other 5k as a lump some to pay off some of your mortgage? Like you said its what you want, but in reality cars are a waste of money and a bad investment. Doesn't say I won't want a nice car in the future..
