Thats because they're not very good. The Saab bits are great and they're quite nice and comfy inside, but all the bits they've got from GM are a bit pish, they're not as reliable as they used to be and they're not that sporty when compared to some of the suggestions. Saabs are all about those old-style 900s with huge turbos, the current ones aren't that good.

MG ZS V6 or ZT V8, Seat Leon Cupra-R, Skoda Octavia VRS, Honda Civic Type R, Honda Integra Type R, Nissan 200SX, Fiat Coupe, plenty of things around that go quite fast for quite cheap and have back seats & a boot (though admittedly some are pretty small). Don't need to go all-out in sensibleness.

Perhaps the ZT is the way to go.

Grandad car + V8 from a Ford Mustang and a silly paint-job, must have an appeal?!

To be honest, MG's have some really odd prices so ZR160, ZS190 V6 or ZT190 V6 are all about £4-5k for a cheap one (get a ZS or ZT of those), while the ZT260 is about £9k-£10k, but has rear-wheel-drive and a V8.

Really? The RX8 was looking favourite, even with poor fuel economy.

What's the deal with MG now in terms of servicing etc as they went bust didn't they? Parts? etc.

If you are considering the RX8 with the rotary engine, its fast, fun, has four doors, even beeps at optimum gear change red line point......

But be prepared it depreciates like a falling stone.

My 2001 Audi TT 225bhp went for the same price as my mates 55 plate RX8........

If you are buying used, go German if you wish to sell in a couple of years and only lose a couple of grand. The RX8 halved in value and early models were subject to recall.

Do your homework, old son but eyes wide open its a fun performance six-ish second car. It's top speed is limited also....and it still does 155mph.

I'll tell you where I am (not sure any of you care).

The RX8 (i've driven one before) is a rottweiler of a car. It's loud, it's brash, it looks pretty good, it's low, it feels fast. But it's not a sensible buy. That said, it IS a thrill.

The Alfa 159 has more space and looks drop dead gorgeous IMHO. It apparently doesn't have the problems which previous Alfas have had. In short, I want. I want the Lusso with the big engine and the top trim. That said, I don't have the money. And if I did, I suspect I'd bottle it and buy a beemer/audi/merc/jag etc. Might be an option is a few more were being sold as they depreciate very quickly. Just a bit too new atm.

The Skoda Octavia is extremely sensible, looks good(ish) AND has some sporty models. Again, it's quite expensive new. When did Skodas get expensive? The vTS would be lovely. People don't seem to be selling and they seem to keep their value well.

Kia C'eed. I test drove one new, due to the price (I was offered it for 9995 - not bad trim) 7 (SEVEN) year warranty. It drove okay but it has NO grunt at all, I felt completely detached from the driving. It's a good deal but it's NOT a drivers car AT ALL.

MR2 (Wilma) she's a playful pup this one. She was revving extremely keenly yesterday, even persuaded me to take her top off (oo-err) as I basked in the Maidstone sunshine and listened to some Hot Chip loud enough that I couldn't hear people outside the car complaining about me playing my music so loud. Can I bring myself to get rid of her.

I can't fit my cricket bag in her.... but still, could I persuade someone to pick me up and give me a lift.

It all really comes down to how much longer my girlfriend's welded together Ka lasts.

It's actually too big.

Seriously.

I've managed it once, in lengthways with the roof up. But it kept falling on me as I tried to drive.

Don't even ask me about the 8ft Christmas Tree.

Well it is a 3.5 litre so Im not surprised its quick! Shame 3 series are now the most common fleet cars in the UK. I'm goin on audit to BMW next week which should be fun - not. I'll get sick of the sight of them after half a day.

The M6 though....Sexytime! I'll never get sick of seeing them.

It's actually a mere 3.0 litre (still big enough). Oh how I long for the simple days when the numbers actually corresponded to the engine size.

Why did they change that? It's well confusing

I got about 20 60mm x 60mm x 2400mm wooden planks in my roadster once (bungy rope to the side roof bar and seatbelted in), with the old roof down trick, didn't drive too nicely though!

What I haven't mentioned here about both stories is that it was pis sing with rain both times.

At the Xmas tree one, I think it was actually snowing. People cheered as I drove past them in the street. It was madness.

God I love that car.

Damn I'm sure the first number was the series, and the second two numbers are the engine size?

like a 325D is a 3 series diesel with a 2.5 litre engine. hmmm

It always used to be, but I'm not sure if that applies to any of them anymore. My sister in law's Dad had a BMW 320. A 2.0 litre engine, you would think. No. 2.2

my friend had a 323 with a 2.5l engine

Pretty much a load of bollocks then number wise?

Anyhow, I do like the 1 series, look pretty compact. The 130D, yes its a 3 litre would abserloutely fly.

Don't like the 1 series, the 1 series coupe is nice though

Think I'd prefer a 3 series coupe though, the 1 series is probably really cramped inside

The 135D is supposed to be the one to go for.

It's a lot of money for a small car though.

yeh one of the directors at our place has a 1 series coupe in black, the M sport version. It looks the biz, but like you said a 3 series coupe is nicer.

Im in no position at the minute to afford either! lol

There is no such thing as a 130D or 135D? The 1 series couple comes as 135i (3 ltr straight 6 twin turbo), 120d M Sport (2ltr diesel) and 123d M Sport (tuned 2 ltr diesel)

Unless you mean the hatchabck, in which case there is still no 130d or 135d, just a 135i petrol and the usual 116, 118, 120 123 etc

Ok, I meant the 3 litre BMW 1 series? Just the most powerful one of the class before they brought out the coupe?

Fu ck it, I prefere the audi S3 anyway!

There was some survey recently where in terms of owner satisfaction, running costs and depreciation and all that, where the 1 series came very high.

Look at me knowing about cars and stuff. I don't even LIKE cars that much. I'm just quite practical
