Club refuses to pay jailed player

Sestanovich played one pre-season friendly for Grays before his arrest

A non-league club faces suspension by the Football Association from all competitions for refusing to pay an ex-player jailed on a robbery charge.

Grays Athletic FC terminated Ashley Sestanovich's contract before his conviction for conspiracy to rob.

Grays have been given 14 days by the FA to pay Sestanovich £14,000 for the five months up to his conviction.

He was jailed for eight years. Two other men were jailed for life for shooting a man dead during the raid.

An FA disciplinary hearing ordered Grays to pay Sestanovich five months' wages, in June, last year, after ruling they were in breach of FA regulations. My principals will not allow me to pay this money from either my own pocket, or from the club's

Grays chairman, Mike Woodward

The club must also pay a £500 fine and the hearing's costs.

If they fail to do so, the south Essex club will be suspended from all football.

Grays have been involved in a counterclaim against Sestanovich who played one pre-season friendly for the club before his arrest.

The club claim that Sestanovich originally told them he was being held on remand for motoring offences, but once the nature of the charges became known they served him with 14 days' notice.

His conviction related to a robbery in Streatham, London, in 2005 in which Thomas Fahey was murdered.

'Shot in cold-blood'

Grays chairman Mike Woodward said: "I am bitterly disappointed in the FA's judgment, all they seem to want to do is take money from football clubs.

"We are being forced to pay approximately £14,000 to a player who only had three training sessions and 20 minutes in a pre-season friendly due to his involvement in a heinous crime which saw a young father shot in cold-blood.

"Unfortunately my principals will not allow me to pay this money from either my own pocket, or from the club's, and the directors are of the same opinion.

"I feel sorry for the supporters of this club but I hope that you will back me on this decision."

The FA said because Sestanovich was arrested after he signed for Grays, the club were obliged to honour his contract until he was actually convicted of an offence, under contract law.

Sestanovich also doubled for former Arsenal star Thierry Henry's TV advertisements for clothing company Nike.

By my calculations thats £650 per week for a Non League Player, cant be right?!

:dunno:

It's often more lucrative to play for a non-league club than a League Two club, the wages are quite similar and when you're non-league you can still fit some more work in elsewhere, leading to a bigger wedge.

Half the Maidstone United squad are either builders or printers.

Can't imagine they get paid a hell of a lot to play for The Stones though....

I used to work with someone who played even further down the leagues and was on £250+ a week.

Thats what Sam McMahon is on at Asfordby Amateurs, and they're about 9th tier of non league football.

Wages in the non league are becoming a farce especially with more ex pros coming down the leagues.

I no for a fact in the Southern League prem, most players are on £250 to £450 a week. Train twice a night, play on a Saturday.

What is Scottish Division 3 (East Stirling etc) league equivalent to in English Leagues?

It would be league 2.

But the quality i would say Conference North/South. Maybe Conference.

When I was on holiday last year I got into conversation to a director of Tamworth. He told me that the top wage that their chairman would pay was £600 a week, but some clubs paid a lot more.

I used to be on £15 per week playing at Burton Park Wanderers in the united counties league. That is two leagues below the sothern league. Some people i know are playing higher up in the southern and they are on £250 a week easy.

I was at Kings Lynn between 2005 and 2007 until i came to University.

Playing for the under 18s i was paid £10 a match, then playing for the reseves on a Saturday, i was paid £30, the lowest out of the team due to me being the youngest.
