Cox Makes The Grade

Posted on: Wed 21 May 2008

Leicester City youngster Lee Cox has this afternoon (Wednesday) put pen to paper on his first professional contract with the club.

The 18-year-old defender has signed a one-year deal after impressing at both youth and reserve team level last season.

Predominantly a right-back, Cox joined the club as a 13-year-old and has progressed through the youth ranks to the fringes of Ian Holloway's squad.

He was part of the youth side that won the 2006-07 Academy Premier League title and regularly trains with the first team.

Fellow youngster Scott Garner also signed a one-year-deal with the club earlier in the week.

City Academy manager Jon Rudkin said: "Lee is another player who has worked extremely hard to get to this stage.

"He always gives 100 percent and that has certainly stood him in good stead to date.

"This is a fantastic opportunity for him to progress further and make an impact at this club."

As with any Academy graduate I'm pleased for the lad. He's exactly as Jon Rudkin describes him. Perhaps a full season of senior football will bring out still more from him.

One Year Deals? Why?

I suppose now we're in League One, if we give them two year deal or more and after a season it becomes apparent they aren't going to make it here, we have to pay them for another year or two in the knowledge we don't want them. Money wasted, which we've done enough of in recent years.

"Always gives 100%" = He's technically limited.

Dirk Kuyt= Paradigm case. If Stamina is your biggest area on the Pro Evo chart you are probably not very good.

Never seen Lee Cox play. Imagine Chambers will be excellent at league 1 level if and when Stearman moves on. We used to have so many right backs, they've all gone!

Good to see a couple of youngsters coming through, but more so I hope something comes of their time in the first team. Too often in the last 10 years we've had good youth players fall either because they're not good enough or they've not been given an adequate chance. League 1 should be a good stage for them to take the step up and hopefully it will lead to fewer cases of fans giving them abuse.

Yeah sounds like he's impressed in the last couple of seasons. A one year deal is sensible really- if he's not good enough then we don't have to hold onto him for any longer than a year.

He'll probably get his chance next season eventually.

If he's as good as the apple whose name he shares then he is sure to be fruity!

If that's true, I'm looking forwards to the emergence of Terry Royal-Gala.

What's the Tejan-Sie apple like?

I've heard the She ehan is very bitter and never quite lives up to what claim to know their fruit say about it.

Shee han fruit - sell them on Leicester Market don't they? Orange things.

Also heard we're signing Rae Burns

Should we be reading into that?

I'm presuming Ollie and Penrice are giving the nod here.
