Avram Grant Sacked

I'm not surprised he's been sacked but it's ridiculous. A trophy less season for a club like Chelsea isn't going to be tolerated.

But considering it's mostly Mourinhos squad, he hasn't done that badly this season. A Champions League final and a Premier League second place isn't that bad for a first season as manager.

It's a fact, football chairmen/owners just don't have the patience anymore.

Mourinho couldn't reach a CL final though could he?

Are we seriously saying that Grant deserved to keep his job if Terry didn't slip taking his penalty, but should be sacked because Terry did?!?

Yes.

Mourinho also won a Carling Cup that Grant failed to do and two Premier Leagues.. If we are being picky Mourinho won the Carling Cup against Liverpool compared to Grant not being able to beat Tottenham.

Exactly, it's Mournho's squad.

So if terry scored he'd have deserved to keep his job...wow

and who cares what Mourinho did?! he's gone for god's sake! Or we could look at Chelsea's poor start to this season when he was still in charge?

Grant had lost the dressing room. Several key players made it obvious that they would be leaving if he had stayed.

So Abramovich had to act quickly. Expect a new manager within a week.

had he? i thought he'd won them over throughout the season. that's how it seemed to me. Hiddink will be installed in a few weeks i'd guess

Anelka and Drogba in particular let it be known they were not happy with him. Others were more subtle, preferring to communicate via their agents to let the club know they'd be moving on.

I think any deal for a new boss will be wrapped up well before Euro 2008.

Wouldnt suprise me if it had already been done.

because terry hit the post with a penalty. it's ridiculous. he'd still be in the job otherwise. and if drogba and lampard didn't hit woodwork during the game. plus they'd started playing some good stuff recently. i hate chelski more than i did before now. that's a lot!

If McCauley's header had gone in the net at Stoke we'd still have a manager.

yep possibly, although Holloway underachieved whether we finished 22nd or 21st/20th

Grant did really quite well. Not sure who'd have done better - Mourinho included (at least in the league and CL)

My point isn't a direct comparrison - it is that 'ifs' count for **** all.

I did feel sorry for him when he trudged down the steps in Moscow, absolutely drenched and an even glummer face than usual.

But there are much better managers out there for me.

I don't see why everyone is so quick to jump on the back of the guy. He's not been perfect, but even a lot of really excellent managers have stumbled. He might not have won the Champions League, but he came rather close and got the decisions in that match quite right I thought - it wasn't down to the wrong player being on the pitch, or the wrong formation it was one of those little bits of luck. The Carling Cup final he got wrong, as he did in the FA Cup, but really other that and drawing a couple of winnable league games there's not that much to fault. All this "oh it was someone elses team" is a really crap excuse as it gets turned around against an unpopular manager whichever way fits - if he wins, its success with someone elses team - big deal, if someone more stylish wins its success with someone else's team, impressive. While the feeling in the dressing room is obviously something that should be factored in, the fact that Didier Drogba adores Mourinho shouldn't be the reason to sack a perfectly competent manager - if any of the other three big-four managers got sacked after that performance there would have been an uproar, but because he's a quiet type and not talkative or stylish there isn't.

If you were told at the start of the season "Chelsea will finish second, lose the final in the Champions League on penalties and lose the Carling Cup Final" you would think it crazy that they would be so short-termist as to ditch the manager. Half you lot on here were having a right dig at Newcastle for sacking a manager who had lost the dressing room, got them stuck in the bottom half, was doing worse than Roeder and on a downward spiral, including nearly letting Derby do the double over them. Chelsea bring in a manger who gets them to finals, takes them up in the league and you're all for ditching him. I just don't get it - its bizarre to base a decision solely on "is there silverware".

When he was appointed I think it was clear he was just a short term fix, a caretaker or stop-gap kind of thing.

Got to feel for him,

Brings them back from no where to get them to within a few points of the title,

Champions League final loss on penalties,

It's not a suprise that he has been sacked though,

Had to laugh that The Sun was reportng Jose was in talks with Roman again lol

Roman knew that, but he wanted to save face by keeping him, if he went and appointed someone from outside of the club halfway through the season, it would look like he'd admitted defeat.

Grant had lost the dressing room.

Absolute crap.

This is your second favourite phrase after 'keyboard warrior'. You have absolutely no evidence for this just like you had none to support the allegation that Holloway had lost his dressing room.

but he was given a 3/4 year contract a few months ago

Here it is, I'll send it Ambramovich (sp) to give to the next manager

I couldn't find the Leicester dressing so perhaps Ollie did lose it. :dunno:

"Champions League final loss on penalties."

That's the most bitter pill.

Grant had done all that was necessary to steer Chelsea into a winning position in that final.

He'd refocused his team effectively at half-time. Many argued Chelsea were the stronger overall even if it's debateable.

John Terry only had to score his penalty to win the trophy. He slipped and missed.

I felt for Terry, I really did. But he was to blame as he readily admitted with no ifs or buts.

What could Grant have done about that? Nothing.

Yet Terry's not been sacked, nor would anyone expect him to be.

It almost seems as if the Chelsea heirarchy were relieved at the result.

Grant's winning might have been an embarrassment, knowing how little they wanted to keep him.

Witness 1 - Didier Drogba.

Witness 2 - Nicolas Anelka.

Witness 3 - Ricardo Carvalho.

Are they enough for you?

Drog and Carvalho were always going to be unhappy as both were fighting to be as far up Mourinho's arse as possible. Maybe it would be better to say he never had the dressing room. The fans certainly changed their opinion of him, and for that you have to credit him.
