davieG Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 http://www.forest.vitalfootball.co.uk/article.asp?a=110854 Leicester City midfielder Matt Oakley is the latest in a long list of players to be linked with a move to the City Ground this summer.According to the Daily Mirror Forest are 'set to swoop' for the 30 year old former Mutton Molester, following City's relegation to League 1. Oakley only signed for the Foxes in January of this year from the Sheep, in a £500,000 deal, which makes a move to the City Ground seem unlikely. But, what with mad man Mandaric in charge and the clubs current demise, I suppose anything is possible. He made 20 appearances for Leicester without scoring a goal. He's also a former England U21, with 4 caps. Various sources are saying we are still looking at trying to sign Luton midfielder David Bell and there is a rather fanciful claim that Reading's Leroy Lita is a target for the Reds'. Not sure about Lita, but it is the silly season and we can but dream. http://www.nottinghamforest-mad.co.uk/news...W&id=393374 Tuesday, 27th May 2008 Matt Oakley is being linked with the Reds The Mirror suggests that the 30-year-old former Southampton and Derby man is a target after Leicester's relegation into League One. http://www.thisisnottinghamforest.co.uk/ne...d-f8184931.aspx 27/05/2008 - Forest line up bid for Nottingham Forest are lining up a bid for Leicester City midfielder Matt Oakley. Reds boss Colin Calderwood believes Oakley, who turns 31 in August, is the man to add some experience to his City Ground squad. And, with Leicester relegated to League One, Forest hope to land the holding central midfielder for a similar fee to the £500,000 the Foxes paid Derby for his services in January. Oakley, a former England under-21 player, began his career at Southampton, where he made more than 300 appearances between 1994 and 2006, scoring 20 goals. He then spent two seasons with the Rams, where he was often captain, making 61 starts and scoring nine goals. Calderwood has already spoken of his desire to add an experienced figure to the Forest ranks as they seek a second consecutive promotion push in the Championship. The Reds are also monitoring the position of Colchester winger Mark Yeates, who is reportedly a target for Crystal Palace boss Neil Warnock. Yeates missed the final few months of the season with a shoulder injury, but had previously impressed in the second-tier, scoring eight goals prior to his injury in February. The former Tottenham trainee, 23, previously spent time on loan at Brighton, Swindon, Hull and Leicester, and joined Colchester on a free transfer last summer. Crystal Palace are understood to be preparing a bid for the Dublin- born Ireland B international, but Forest may also be ready to pounce for Yeates, who can play on the left wing or as a striker. In the meantime, Matt Lockwood's transfer from Forest to Colchester has still not been completed, as the club attempt to agree personal terms with the full-back. Forest have accepted a £100,000 offer for Lockwood, who suffered an injury soon after joining from Leyton Orient. Colchester still hope to sign Lockwood by the end of the week.

RedHux Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 600k is the figure I've heard rumoured. What do you reckon? Is he worth the cash?
Babylon Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 how much will they pay for him??? Hang on i'll check my crystal ball.... nope it's not working today, sorry.
MikeyT Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 600k is the figure I've heard rumoured. What do you reckon? Is he worth the cash? We only got him for 500k!
Babylon Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 600k is the figure I've heard rumoured. What do you reckon? Is he worth the cash? On performances for us... no, on performances for other teams, yes.

MPH Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 500k in the star we need to reduce the wage bill and i see this as one of the ways. Although i would probably prefer to keep Oakley and let Clemence go.... but either is acceptable, i reckon
Babylon Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 we need to reduce the wage bill and i see this as one of the ways. Although i would probably prefer to keep Oakley and let Clemence go.... but either is acceptable, i reckon The wage bill has already been reduced thanks to clauses in their contracts. As long as gates don't drop too much I can't see why we would have to get rid of players if we don't want to. We aren't exactly losing out on much money from the league as what you get for being in the championship it a joke anyway.

A little bird told me that for reasons unclear, the City players signed since the turn of the year did NOT have such a clause in their contracts so will be on the same money as before. This is a bit bizarre because everybody signed prior to the January transfer window by all accounts did have a contract with the clause in
Thracian Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 I can't see why Oakley would be released until we have a new manager. We supposedly got him at a bargain price. He didn't play well for Holloway. Apart from Stearman, who did? A talented manager might use him far more effectively and I certainly don't see the point of passing him on the Forest in what would amount to a fire sale. Everyone has a price but I'm not aware we've become a registered charity. And if he'd not worth more than £600,000 I've not the faintest idea why we signed him. In fact why the hell would we sign anyone who's not worth more than £600.000 apart from under 16's?
Father Ted Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 We need to hang on to Oakley. He could be the engine in our midfield next season.
Simon Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 Oakley should stay and help us get out of this mess. Also interesting to read about Yeates. Just goes to show how good this club seems to be be at fooking up reasonable players and then once they've left they seem to do well!
SamL Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 We need to hang on to Oakley. He could be the engine in our midfield next season. I think Wesolowski can do that job, providing we can keep hold of him.
Father Ted Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 I think Wesolowski can do that job, providing we can keep hold of him. But Wesolowski is more of a defensive player than attacking. If him and Oakley played together next year then it would give Oakley more of a chance to get forward.
Daggers Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 Everyone has a price but I'm not aware we've become a registered charity. And if he'd not worth more than £600,000 I've not the faintest idea why we signed him. In fact why the hell would we sign anyone who's not worth more than £600.000 apart from under 16's? Maybe Holloway took a leaf out of my book - got pissed and bought him late at night on Ebay. I imagine the look of shock on his face when the postman delivered Oakley four days later would have been a picture. On the other hand, I reckon my drum kit would do a much better job holding the midfield than Oakley.
Simon Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 But Wesolowski is more of a defensive player than attacking. If him and Oakley played together next year then it would give Oakley more of a chance to get forward. Strange. When they played together this season, more often than not, Weso was the player getting forward more.
dandannieldanok Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 We need to hang on to Oakley. He could be the engine in our midfield next season. Or he could continue to be a passenger like this season. If anything around the 500k mark is bid we must get rid of him IMO.
Daggers Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 Or he could continue to be a passenger like this season. If anything around the 500k mark is bid we must get rid of him IMO. Doesn't seem to be much point in that unless we can bring in someone better. I'd rather pull a replacement in first before getting shot of anyone. That said, I'm hopeful that the new manager and the new season will be very positive for him - I think pre-season will give the core of the squad a sense of purpose that has been lacking for some time and this would be disrupted by large-scale turnover of playing staff.
Babylon Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 If we get Davies there is no way him or howard will be leaving, unless they demand to move obviously.
Thracian Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 I think Wesolowski can do that job, providing we can keep hold of him. Weso, Oakley? They both have their strengths but it all depends on the new manager, how he sees his team shaping up, the job he wants doing in midfield and whether those two fit the requirements. The Oakley of last season would be easily replaced. And the thing that concerns me about both Weso and Oakley is that neither score nor create enough goals. Weso would also be a concern in terms of injury. In truth I think a fit Hammond would be harder to replace than Oakley. Having players with pace and strength is going to be a vital requirement and I don't see we have many such players. One less now Hammond has gone. I accept there may have been good reasons for Hammond's departure but I said last summer that he'd need to be replaced if he wasn't used but it never happened, thus contributing to our eventual demise. Another factor that needs remembering is that there's no sense in hanging on to everyone cos it's counter productive. The manager needs to decide pretty quickly which members of our squad are most likely to blend into the team he wants and then be ruthless about shedding the surplus. Being single minded is a major requirement of a manager. It sets them apart from some fans who often want to retain those they see as our best or biggest name players whether they are suited to our needs or not. For me I'd have a list of qualities I see as positive in a player. A long and perhaps surprising list in some ways. I'd rate the player out of 10 in each category and that would do much to influence my decisions. Statistics are always available to help - number of shots, number of goals, number of successful passes etc. After all was considered, anyone falling short on effect would be quietly on his way out. Whatever his pedigree or reputation.
whitlock Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 IF Billy Davis was to be our new manager then MAYBE Oakley may want to stay with us?? Maybe Davis would know how to get the best out of Oakley and to a certain extent maybe Howard aswell? Then again maybe Oakley and Billy don't get along and it would be a bigger incentive for Oakely to want to go?? Who knows??
bigneville Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 A little bird told me that for reasons unclear, the City players signed since the turn of the year did NOT have such a clause in their contracts so will be on the same money as before. This is a bit bizarre because everybody signed prior to the January transfer window by all accounts did have a contract with the clause in If this is true, I can't believe how niave Holloway was with his signings. I thought a relegation wage drop clause was the standard procedure now-a-days, and with Holloway ignoring this and the financial future of the club, it makes me even happier that he is no longer in charge here.
